Title: We make gren smoothies at the canteen
Post by: terstoo on March 23, 2011, 05:40:14 am
Hi all,

Just thought I'd let you know how wonderful our thermomix is at school. We make our own chicken patties for our chicken burgers, we are still trying to find a really nice chicken ball/nugget recipe, (we tried the one in the EDC but for some reason they are sometimes a little dry, so experimenting some more!) we do muffins, fruity dream, sorbet, and we have started making....... green smoothies!! I started drinking them the end of last year (just google green smoothies...tons of info, but my fav website about them is www.rawfamily.com)  So I use to take them to work in a flask and teachers would ask what I was drinking and when I told them they were a little surprised, so I use to give them a mouthful in a glass to taste. Most of them were impressed. This year one of the teachers asked were we going to be making them so they could buy them? Well, why not we thought!!! So now we do green smoothies to sell at the canteen.

We don't just sell them to teachers now though, some of the students have found out that we are making them and asked what was in them etc,and when we tell them how good they are for them, they want to buy them too!! We are so happy to have our thermie in the canteen. We are slowly converting the school to even healthier food than what I introduced when I took over as manager, thanks to the thermie!!

That is so impressive!  I hope that when my kids are school age their school is as open minded and progressive as yours.  Well done :)

As a retired teacher I applaud you terstoo. The outlay for the machine would  do wonderful things for the health of the children. It is hard to try and sell healthy food to children at the canteen.

terstoo, is one TMX enough to cope with what you need to do?

I love hearing stories like this! Very inspirational terstoo. I bet for some of those kids a green smoothie may be the only way they will eat those leafy greens.

Have you seen Chef Laurent's book for school canteens? There are some great ideas in there, plus instructions for the TM too.  :)

We do already have the Chef Laurant's cookbook. Use it heaps! It has the best Aioli mayo recipe. It is divine, I really wish I could post it here, but don't want to breach those copy right laws.  :'(  I run a high school canteen in Western Sydney, it's P&C run and they were really impressed with the TMX when I got my demonstrator to come to a meeting to show them. I think we have already paid for it in the things we have made.
Also our school is 80% non english speaking back-ground, so I'm sometimes surprised at some things the kids suggest we could try on the menu or even things they will eat (drink) ..like the green smoothies.  ;D
Judydawn... some days we would love to have 2 TMX's.  :D :D :D  Some of the seniors suggested Lassi's to us, we just have to figure out how to fit all the things in we prepare through the day to be able to have them all ready for lunch at the same time!!
I love using the TMX in the canteen, I think every canteen should have at least one.  :D :D :D

YOU ARE AMAZING !!! Jamie Oliver better watch out - green smoothies !! wahooooo !!!
I am so excited for you !! I am a green smoothie fan too - if I don't have them daily, I really miss it - I have converted my kids too and we have one every afternoon after school.
I have volunteered a few shifts at our highschool tuckshop and although they make up gorgeous big grainyrolls with salad, they put processed chicken nuggety things, 'beef' burgers etc. all heavily processed and fried. YUK !
Hey, what about using some green apple blitzed into your chicken burgers? check out this sausage roll recipe I made using the thermy to make the mince and whizz up all the extras.....they were so moist and yummy (the secret ingredient is the apple!)
