Hi all,
I know this question has come up before but I have been searching through older forum emails and just can't find the answer (I have seen it mentioned before though).
Do people generally think that the two main UK tmx cookbooks are worth buying? Do they contain mainly different recipes to ours in Australia? I'm considering buying them, but would like to know what they are like first.
Thanks in advance and sorry to bring this up again.
Chelsea :)

i'm not sure of the answer to that but i know we are all eagerly awaiting the UK curry book!!!
-
Chelsea, there are discussions about recipe books in the Questions, Technical Issues etc section. Is that what you were referring to?
-
Karen, If you are after TM Indian recipes I have a lot which were forwarded to me by my group leader. I havent tried any but can pass them on if you like.
-
Thanks Judy.
That was the section I was referring too (and probably where I should have posted this question ;D). Spot the newbie!
Chelsea :)
P.S - If anyone else has thoughts about the English cookbooks I would love to hear them however.
-
CarolineW has the answers - she has botha nd has used both - but I believe there are enough differences to make them a worthwhile purchase.
-
Thanks Thermomixer. I actually just stumbled upon the emails then that I had originally read about the UK books (including some from Caroline). They were under the UK Lemon Curd recipe in the jams and chutney section. I knew Caroline had already discussed them in detail, but just couldn't locate the emails again.

If I am looking for a particular posting and am lucky enough to remember who wrote it, I just go to the members list and click on the name then browse quickly through their list of postings to come up with what I am looking for and where to find it. I find this a much faster method of finding things.

I'd definitely recommend getting it, Chelsea. It's really quite different to the Aussie one, except on a few points. It has more recipes than the Oz one, and I generally find them more adventurous and tasty - but that's a personal opinion, of course, and may be because it's more geared to my palate (being British ;D ). I use it more often than the Oz one, but I do use the Oz one too and am very glad to have it. I find that if the GB one is thin on the ground in an area (eg smoothies) then the Oz one covers it, and vice versa. Hope this helps.

Sorry JD - there's only a 1000 odd of my posts to sift thru' ;) ;) ;D

Thanks CArolineW - I saw a copy of the old English TM21 book over the weekend and it was better than the Aussie Everyday book with pics and more solid construction.
Think I'll have to buy one.
-
Thanks Caroline. That was just the answer I was hoping for. It will cost about $100 AU for me to buy the two main books (the basic one and the demonstrator delights book) including postage, so I just wanted to check that they were different and worth buying.

:o :o
Gee JD you must have a very good memory!!! The best I do is vaugly remember something about ...... LOL!!! :D ???

It's good with some things ILB but very bad with others ;D ;D ;D If an article is of particular interest to me, I tend to remember who posted it, just like you would remember a friend's name. It is so frustrating when you know you have read something and then can't find it. The search thingy doesn't always come up with the answer unfortunately.
-
perhaps we might have to have an index at the top of each section?
was just thinking they need an index and search facility for all of the indexes of their books, on the tmx site too!
-
Good idea - they do on the Bimby site to allow fater searching - brilliant.

There is a TMX site which has the indexes of their books? I often read references to sites I'm unaware of while browsing through the posts here. Would it perhaps be possible to have a Useful Links thread?
-
yes great idea Caroline. i think there are a lot of links in the news section but there might be somewhere else we can post a list of links - tips and tricks? or somewhere else? where is most obvious?
-
Spooky Caroline - I was just thinking the same myself as I keep coming across sites but don't know if they are known on this forum or not.
-
Any links would be good - gratefully received.
Most of the ones that have been recorded are in the News section http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?board=22.0 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?board=22.0)
many on this page http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?board=22.20 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?board=22.20)

Re the English books - how do I go about getting one?
Is it best to contact the English site or are they available here?
-
Hi Amanda,
You have 3 options. You can contact your consultant to order them for you, contact HQ or you can order them from the UK site. HQ have some books in stock.
-
One thing I would say, having just got the 2nd edition of the book this morning as a present for someone - make sure you're getting the 2nd edition. I have the first, and it really isn't different enough to justify buying myself the 2nd edition. But the 2nd editions is better than the 1st (guess that's why they went to the effort to produce it ;D). It was the comment that HQ has some in stock which makes me say this - I'd just double check first that they're 2nd edition, personally. Not sure how long it's been out for, but certainly not for many months.
For instance, would you believe that the question I asked on this forum about whether it was possible to make my own chick pea flour in the TMX is answered (with precise instructions) in the basics section now?!
-
Thanks CarolineW - VERY useful advice - ta muchly.
-
I just got an email back from Aus HQ and they said that they don't stock the English cookbooks and they recommended that that I buy them through the UK website.

If you can wait 6mths Im going back to UK for Xmas so am going to order the UK books and bring back with me, I got a quote from them to post to Aus and it made them so expensive!
-

-
Thanks so much for the offer. Will let you know. The recipes are coming in so thick and fast to the forum here . . . . perhaps I can wait.

Thanks! ;D

I have really enjoyed some recipes from my UK books. Funnily enough, I think I reduced my tablespoon measure by a bit when I tried some recipes (due to prior warning) - but when I gave my spoons a really good look the other day they are actually UK friendly :o I have x2 different types, but both appear to be UK based and not Oz. Now I am going to have to try and find some Ozzie measurements I suppose :-)) I also realise that 5g here and there is probably not going to make much diff unless its a spice. Has anyone else found this?
-
I really like a lot of the UK recipes too CP. The first time I flicked through my books I didn't think much of them (not too our tastes), but on closer inspection there were lot's of recipes that I was eager to try. I must say that I haven't worried about the spoon measurements and I don't think it has affected my cooking at all.

okay its 2wks and i head back to the uk
i can bring back a few books if anyone is interested, but probably only 4 or 5 (not sure how heavy or thick?) as I plan on doing a lot of shopping!!!! ha ha ha
