I've got beer pots, finally used snail bait, bran scattered around and I'm STILL finding holes in my spinach and live snails, they've destroyed my basil and I'm at a complete loss what to do next...
-
Epsom salts might be worth a try.
-
Slug pellets.
Even organic farmers use them.
Use sparingly and targeted.
-
I use slug pelets, have too
-
Yep, I use the little green pellets too. I just have to watch that my dogs don't eat them.
-
Here is info
http://www.which.co.uk/news/2011/03/slug-pellets-247120/
The ferric phosphate ones are organic
-
I think I've heard that egg shells scattered around on the ground as they can't crawl over them. Good luck. :)
-
You could try ashes from a fire (or BBQ if you don't have a fire place) I don't think they like that very much - I seem to recall someone saying talcum powder as well as it dries them out - also coffee grounds from your local cafe are reputed to be very good (and they are also good for the garden).
-
Could it be something else eating the spinach like moths?
-
oh absolutely could be something else, I only said snail because I was fortunate enough to spring one crawling up the side of the pot!! I've been out in the early hours of the morning, just light, and found some slug activity so that was the main prompting for the snail bait..
I have the ashy parts of the weber to clean out, I might try that now it's been suggested...
-
Ugh, hate them. We have more slugs than snails.
I'm having trouble with aphids. Because we have canola all around us, the aphids have come. They've totally destroyed my broccolini before it even had a chance to emerge from it's leaves.
-
It could be red spider too. They destroyed all our basil in one night. Horrid things.
-
scary, you need chickens, free range to eat the bugs for you
-
When I had a garden and Labrador I used beer in a saucer which killed the snails.

It is so frustrating. We use coffee grounds and snail pellets. Keep at it as they do tend to go away if you keep up the offensive!
-
MJ try garlic oil for aphids

Now have slugs in my kitchen, they come out at night eeek, messy.
-
Gross. Sawdust or eggshells where they get in will stop them - or salt (dries them up ;D )
-
I had snails for lunch.

And some wine to wash them down.

Gert, you are so funny....
I had pizza
-
Gert it's five past 6 in the morning, I haven't had breakfast yet!
Now I don't want any.
You are a scream.
Astarra don't know where coming in.
Dead one fell out of dishwasher last week too.
-
That is the ultimate revenge Gertbysea..........LOL
I will certainly try everyone's suggestions though, my garden beds will end up like a compost site full of egg shells, coffee grounds, bran and beer!!
-
Hey we're delicious. I could not believe my eyes when I saw them on the special board.
The last time I has snails was an eon ago at a cocktail party in Singapore. Some guy and I ate 50 each with a lot of wine. Best party ever.

Love it Gert!
Thanks for the tip re garlic oil, I'll give it a go next time they appear. They've all gone now, it was a whirlwind pit stop for about three days where they came, they sucked and they left!
Now, we have an influx of earwigs. I have found two in our bed in the last two days!
-
Hate bugs.....!!! and lol to gert...
-
HATE HATE HATE (yes I do mean to yell) earwigs - how do you get rid of them?
-
I really do not like earwigs. I really really do not like earwigs.

We have cabbage white butterflies who eat everything.
Any ideas?
H :)
-
No, someone will help Hally
-
my mum bought this thingymajig from the $2 shop and it's a solar powered butterfly that spins around and around... it's a novelty BUT also the theory is, it attracts the flying things in your garden and when they go towards it and it does nothing for them, they fly away somewhere else!!
-
well it sounds like a novel idea in theory - does it actually work?

Tennis racquet?
-
One of those electric ones lol
Lmao at that image.. Perhaps a glass too much wine !
-
well I have it in the vegie garden that has the lettuce, tomatoes, basil and ummm, trying to think of what I planted in there yesterday... and differently to last year in that particular patch, I don't have any flying anything's hanging around so maybe it does work... and for a couple of bucks it's probably worth a shot.. I had that many flying insects and butterfly's around my vegies last year it became ridiculous, I tried EVERYTHING and nothing worked... heard Jamie Oliver's (I LOVE HIM) gardener saying he gets the 'hoover' out, shakes the plants and then hoovers the fliers...lol
-
Lol we'll if crazy works why not!
-
I have seen those solar powered butterfly's, but the tennis racquet might work better
