Today I had to buy vanilla extract and I didn't realize how much I always spent on it, it was 11$ at woolies for a small bottle... :o
And as I am making more and more homemade muffins, banana bread, etc. will be using more of it..
I remember a thread about you guys making your own using vanilla beans..
So was curious to know where exactly do you buy the vanilla beans and also please suggest a good recipe for making one!!
Thanks in advance :)

I think most people use this recipe thermolover.

Update, I've given you the wrong link thermolover, see further down for the correct one from CC. This one is for paste the other for extract.
-
I use that one and find it quite good. No matter what you do it seems to crystallise, but I give it a good stir and use it. I have had to microwave it once too.
I buy my vanilla beans from www.sistermixin.com They are very good. They cost $16 plus postage for 10 vanilla pods. They come quickly too.

I used the vanilla extract recipe from here on the forum.
Vanilla Extract - from Shayla. (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=1661.0)
Being in the UK I bought my vanilla beans from eBay.
-
Oops, so do I ;D I misread extract for paste. Sorry thermolover, now you have both recipes though. Thanks CC.
-
I use Shayla's recipe as well and bought my vanilla beans off ebay, but Gert knows of a good organic supplier in Qld, if she pops on to this thread perhaps she can give you the details - she sent them to me once, but I have since lost the name, unfortunately.

i buy mine in bali . i make vanilla sugar , vanilla extract and paste with it

If you decide you would like to make Vanilla Bean Paste this video is good to watch too :)

I found Gert's source, good luck: http://www.brokennosevanilla.com.au
The sistermixin video is also very interesting. I had never seen it before. I may be making vanilla paste this weekend!
-
Woowww, Thank you so much all, I will have a look at all and am very keen on making my own from now on :)
Probably a stupid question, but what is the difference between vanilla paste and vanilla extract?
I probably think it is the intensity... but not sure...
-
Yes, it's a thick gooey paste thermilover, a lot of Tenina's recipes use it. I still only use extract because the paste is so expensive.
-
Make some Judy. It's the cost of the beans and some sugar. I'm pleased with mine. Nikki got me onto it. I also have more vanilla essence making itself and I will start a second bottle when we go back so that I won't run out, I can just charge one up while I use the other.
-
I know I should cookie but I don't do enough baking or desserts to justify it. I have made 2 large bottles of essence though.
-
I made a bottle of essence for Xmas 2013 gifts and I still have some left over; that's why I'm thinking I might make vanilla paste at the weekend with the vanilla pods from the essence and give that and the left over essence away. I'm thinking the essence must be REALLY strong by now!
-
Fair enough Judy. I make a lot of Tenina's Graneusli and use the paste in that.
-
Just curious, does any one make a non-alcoholic vanilla essence?
-
I purchase the paste from Costco and generally use this rather than extract all the time. I'll need to check the container though as I never realised that it contained sugar.
-
I see there are plenty of non-alcohol recipes on the web thermilover but I've not heard of any of our members making anything except the alcohol version.
-
I was wondering if any one has zapped the beans after they have been used to make the. Essence.
-
Nikki's suggestion is to add a couple more beans and top up the alcohol to make more essence. As each bottle gets to about half she does this.
The beans would make a very boozy milkshake. :D ;D

I add new beans to my essence and take a few of the old ones out. Then I dehydrate the old ones and put them in a big jar with some fine ground sugar and make vanilla sugar. So good on french toast!

Thanks for the tips KS :)
