I liked Kabul beauty school, too. I find it interesting to read about other cultures. I always think of this book when I'm getting my eyebrows waxed... Lol. There's a few other books that are good reads, too, but I can't for the life of me remember what they are...

The author of the Beauty School wrote the Coffee Shop, you'd enjoy that.

I recently discovered that the book after this one for our Book Club is 50 Shades of Crap!! AHHH!
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

I don't understand how 50 Shades of Crap has become so popular - there is so much hype about it and the more people write the more other people will be curious to see just how BAD it is and so it goes.  I guess it's a good exercise in marketing rubbish.  One of my colleagues said that her friend is giving it to her 17 year old daughter to read - I asked if the friend had read it herself and perhaps she should do so first!

We are reading it because of the hype but I'm not expecting anything great.

I also love Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies Detective Series, but, really, most things he writes are good as well. The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood is a good read.

MJ,
I love the Stephanie Plum books too. I remember reading the first one, and the second one, and the third, fourth etc and laughing out loud. I'm finding now that the series has gone on too long and they no longer seem quite so funny - more predictable.
I also love the No1 Ladies Detective Agency series, but haven't found the other series by Allexander Mc Call Smith so enjoyable.
I read the Little cafe in Kabul earlier this year, and enjoyed it. I'll look out for the beauty school one too.
Another book I've enjoyed recently is The Proper Care & Maintenance of Friendship by Lisa Verge Higgins.

Have done the 50 shades trilogy already- Ho hum in my estimation! I'm currently reading a fantastic book called " Buddhism for Mothers of school- children". I know it sounds very new age etc but a good friend of mine put  me onto it and I can't put it down. It has far less to do with Buddhism (the author practices Buddhism) and far more to deal with various strategies for dealing with common situations faced by mothers in general. it is a lovely book and a great read. Even though I am in no way Buddhist, the philosophies in the book are very sensible and I think we could all probably take a leaf out of certain aspects of Buddhism in our daily lives. That book along with my weekly yoga lessons are making me so calm, not to mention my recent holiday in Fiji! There's nothing like practicing yoga on a white sand beach on a Fijian Island listening to Cafe del Mar. Oh well, back to the reality of daily life- I am back at work to fund the next holiday now!!

Merlin, I must see if my local library has that one. Sounds like a great book.
