Chit Chat / Re: What kind of labels do you use?
« on: June 12, 2013, 10:10:44 am »
I make removable vinyl adhesive labels that are dishwasher & freezer safe. They are an extension of the ThermoStyle decals line (Aussie Made bling for you Thermi). I've been making for myself & using last couple of months & love them so will be putting them up soon for others to enjoy.
My fb page is www.facebook.com/ThermoStyle & website www.thermostyle.com.au

Tips and Tricks / Re: Clever way to separate eggwhite from yolk
« on: March 11, 2013, 10:46:00 am »
faffa - I guess we're both clever chick's then! ;-)

What is it they say about good ideas? Something like, "for every good idea you have, there are hundreds around the world who've had the exact same idea".

JMC - great to hear this handy hint is getting shared - I think it's ability to separate eggs is just another surprise bonus that makes the TM31 design simply awesome!

Diet / Re: Failsafe Diet-Elimination Diet
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:12:10 pm »
Would love to find some FAILSAFE friends locally, play dates with kids, recipe support, etc.
Are there any FAILSAFEr's here from Toowoomba or surrounds?

Introduce Yourself / Re: Need inspiration for elimination diet
« on: February 16, 2013, 11:51:37 am »
Hi nickykat,
Good luck with your diet, it sounds like babyw has great advice, I've got those cookbooks and I really liked the friendly food one. I will be embarking on the elimination diet in a few months too. I'm hoping to work out triggers for my migraines. I'll be interested to hear how you go.
Good luck :)

Hi Jamberie,
Try doing the elimination diet for AMINES ONLY first. Most people, including myself, find amines are the trigger for their migraines.
Cheers  :)

Introduce Yourself / Re: Need inspiration for elimination diet

Hi nickykat,
We've been on RPAH elimination diet 6 months. I can't tolerate any sals, amines etc at all so haven't been able to reintroduce anything successfully. My 2 little boys passed the amines test, but can't reintroduce any sals at all. We do meat, so makes it easier, but usually have a couple of vegetarian meals a week.

If you find you're okay with amines, you could do a vegetarian nasi goreng, using FAILSAFE veges & egg. Just google nasi goreng and adapt a recipe to suit FAILSAFE foods.

I do not like the RPAH cookbook because of the high sugar in a lot of the recipes, but also bc I found most of them taste yuck. I recommend domestic diva unleashed & cooking for oscar websites. I think you'll do FAR better with these sites than a cookbook. Here are the links:
http://www.domesticdivaunleashed.com/
http://www.cookingforoscar.com/

I've posted a recipe on mock tomato sauce on this forum. Make this multiple times a week to go into meals. Real lifesaver.
http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=11892.0

The above should get you started. I've ended up making up most of my recipes as hubby isn't FAILSAFE but eats it when at home, had to come up with a lot of recipes to pass as 'normal'. When I get time, will write them down & put them into an ebook or something similiar to help others like yourself.

If I may make a suggestion, if you're going to do the elim diet, do it properly - for eg. no toothpaste - use bicarb & salt mix instead. Find a no-frag shampoo, soap etc option. Fragrance free deodorant, etc. Use bicarb only for cleaning (even the smell of vinegar is too much as it's a strong salicylate). When you go off the foods, you'll become more sensitive to smells of sals & react to them too. Perfumes worn by others can be a real prob. We've had to take our 3.5yr old out of Kindy because he kept reacting to perfumes & cleaning product smells used in the centre. Make sure your kids don't wear sunscreen unless you find one that's RPAH approved. It's pretty full on. I wouldn't recommend the diet unless you 'have' to do it. If you can do a Liver Cleanse or take a weed, seed, feed approach to your gut first, I'd do that! If you end up needing to do the elimination diet, having a healthy liver & better functioning gut will help you tolerate reintroduction of sals.

All the best! Let us know how you go! :)

Special Diets / Re: A perfect alternative to sugar.
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:26:51 am »
Honey, dates, rapadura, etc although better choices than the 'white, brown, raw sugars' still aren't GOOD for you.
The key is to use ALL forms of sugar sparingly.
True, Maple syrup is probably one of the best choices, having a kinder affect on the body.
Whole foods too, such as fruit, are better choices than refined sugars because their fibre contents helps to slow digestion & assimilation, but the sugars in fruit are still not GOOD for you either.

Basically, if it's 'sweet', it's a treat.

A brief article on sugar metabolism, for anyone interested - http://mediways.com/category.asp?subrelated=445&id=23.

Special Diets / Re: FAILSAFE Mock Tomato Sauce
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:10:54 am »
greenie, have you tried making it yet?

the key seems to be the garlic, pear, kidney beans, salt & citric acid. Throw in the celery & leek (or shallots) when you have, but you can get away without them. Sometimes I make without the garlic but it really is fuller & nicer with it!

It's something you can whip up for a no-time-to-cook, need-a-quick, simple meal night. I just throw in ingred's to thermi & set for 10min cooking, while it's cooking, I throw on some pasta in a pot, fry a few hundred grams of mince in another, then pour in the sauce & let the mince & sauce simmer for 5-10min, then ready to eat! A quick bolognaise sauce!

Tonight I didn't have meat defrosted so we just had the mock tomato sauce on pasta with a generous dollop of sour cream. NOM NOM! Sour cream & the mealy bean flavour goe realllly well together. Simple, fast, yummy!

Festive Seasons / Re: Making Condensed Milk
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:04:02 am »
Oooh, thanks!
I'd like to try the ice-cream recipe but was put off b/c it contained condensed milk - I don't like it bc is WAAAAAAYY to sweet. It never occured to me I could make my own! Now I can make & use 1/3 the sugar & then use it in the ice-cream recipe. YUM!
Thanks for the revolutionary thought!

Tips and Tricks / Re: tip for 600 gram rice cooking in varoma
« on: December 14, 2012, 10:13:59 am »
Ive successfully cooked 550g of rice in the steamer basket twice now. And it only takes 17min. I think I'll stick to doing it TM recipe way (but w larger quantity) until the fam grows and we need 600+grams. I just dont have the 35min it takes to steam in varoma dish - basket is much quicker! thanks for the tip though - will keep in mind for future years!

oh, ah ha! I get it!  :D
No wonder what I did didn't work! Thanks for clarifying.
sounds very energy inefficient if you just did rice on its own but could be good if you were cooking something in the TM bowl at the same time. Will keep that handy trick (steaming rice in Varoma) up my sleeve for when I want both.
I am confident it will work now so I don't need to experiment.
thanks heaps for the tip caatjeh!

Oh, I see, no holes in your basket caatjeh!
I wonder if that would make a difference too because I imagine the steam would move into the bowl, condense/circulate through rice & not get out??
I used a vege steamer basket, lots of holes. I wonder if that would make a difference...?
Will have to experiment.
I was using 'general' rice by the way, just plain 'ol medium grain white.

thanks JD, it was sp 4. Have edited my post.

Caatjeh, thanks. Will try again, boiled water first.
All holes were free for steam to come through as I insert a vege steamer basket in varoma dish and it has little feet that raise it off the bottom.
Will use less water per ur advice, though probably half cup more as I don't want to risk it boiling dry, given I'm not yet confident with cooking this way.
Am thinking though, at 38 min, might be better for us to keep cooking rice in steamer basket in TM bowl & just cook the rice twice, as we can be eating sooner and cooking second lot during our first serving.
will try your recom again first.

okay HELP please!
Caatjeh, I had a major fail attempting steaming rice in the varoma dish.  :-[
I put metal basket inside the varoma dish, in that 550g rinsed rice.. But I  put about 1000g water in bowl.
set at varoma, 35 minutes, sp4 - still very much uncooked - hard. Because it was late, hungry kids etc we just dumped it all into a saucepan with boiled water and cooked it for about 10min til done. I reckon it would have taken at least another 30min in varoma dish otherwise, possibly an hour more & may never have cooked at all!
the only dif I can see in recipe, is that you used 3 cups water. Is that where I went wrong? Or should it not matter?
could the variety of rice make a dif? I used medium grain, white rice. What did you use?
 ???

rice bran oil is also the only oil that is low salicylates so great for people with leaky gut syndrome or food intolerance.
