Title: What made you buy your Thermomix?
Post by: marmee on June 03, 2009, 10:24:04 am
I am new to this site and THIS close (imagine me with my fingers parted ever so narrowly) to buying a Thermomix, so I thought I'd ask you all what was it that lead you to purchase your Thermomix?  And now that you have it, what is the one reason you will never part with it?

My wife bought mine for my birthday - think she regrets it now  ;D ;D ;D ;D as it seems to consume me.  I had lusted after one for a few years, but no real reason to purchase one.  For those having to cook for people with allergies/sensitivities then I think they really will make a big difference.

I can't imagine life without my Bimby.  It is so versatile and makes cooking fun, fast and easy.  The variety of tasks that it performs from chopping, cooking, steaming means that it sits on the bench and gets used regularly unlike other "toys" that I have bought.

This is not a paid advertisement on behalf of Vorwerk.  ;)

I had never even heard of the TMX until DD went to a demo and decided to have one herself so that some of her friends and their DH's could attend.  She told me I would love it and as DD's know best (or is that Mother knows best ???) I thought, why not.  I was, however, quite let down and scared of it at first as everything I did basically was disappointing - not the custards and easy things like that but I really wanted to use it for main meals.  However, discovering this forum and trying recipes from here which actually worked was the one thing that has really bonded me with my TMX and it just sits on the cupboard begging me to use him every day.  I have less washing up, rarely clean the cooktop and backsplash and have never been happier in my kitchen.  No man nor his army would get it off me now and I hate to think how I would go back to the old way of cooking if it broke down and had to go away to be fixed.  I find the meals healthier and the one fried meal I had recently, I hated. We rarely eat out these days and at 62, when a lot of women are sick to death of cooking, I love it.  I have told DD No. 1 she can have it when I depart this earth as DD2 already has one.  If you possibly can get your DH to a demo, do so as they seem to love it and in most homes they make the final decision on a big item like this.  I'm lucky, if I want something I know DH would never say no.

Marmee, mine is a passion, I love my THX! My husband is jealous as I now seem to spend more time in the kitchen than with him, and love it.
In Spain, it has been around for years, but I originally believed it was for people who didn't know how to cook, or couldn't be bothered or had nothing better to do with their money, I couldn't have thought more wrongly! A friend hosted a demonstration, and I was invited, and it was love at first sight, so much so, that i was dreaming about owning one! So eventually, after much persuading, DH bought me one for xmas. He threatened me then with....you better use it! And now he begs me not to!!!! ;D ;D ;D
My children are delighted, they love it sooo much too, and everything it makes. The desserts, the cakes, drinks, ice-cream, everything. Its healthier, as now we don't eat so much crappy foods, we knock up our own bread, pizzas, sauces, drinks, biscuits etc so at least we know exactly whats in our diet!
And to top it all, my weekly shopping bill has reduced by half, which has really kept DH from flogging it off on ebay!!
I use it daily and I honestly couldn't live without it! In fact we are going away in August to a friends villa in Portugal, and I will certainly be sneaking "CLATTER" in the boot of my car! Would rather leave my clothes behind, than him! But just the thought....one week of cooking meals for the family without him, would be desperate! NO WAY, my THX is coming with!
Marmee, it is an appliance to be used, left out on the counter, its healthier, easier and fun, plus after 6 months with all your food savings it's paid for itself!
Just think no more packet stuff, everything home made, and delicious..... Vorwerk has been around for over 30 years, and my only regret is......how did I NOT buy this before! Two weeks ago, I even bought my 2nd jug, which is always in motion too! Good job I have a tiny kitchen, otherwise i would probably have 2!
I DO NOT work for Vorwerk either! But if I had time, I would definitely take up working for them! Best invention in history! Thats my opinion anyway! ;) ;) ;)

Here, here - I saw the TMX 6 years ago, but it was my wife (who doesn't use it) that purchased it.

In all honesty, my wife :)

I don't drink... ok to excess.  Maybe a beer a week.  I don't smoke.  I work all the time, except that cooking is my hobby.  I was "aware" of them and then saw one on a visit to Montreal.  When my wife saw a kitchen toy that I didn't have, she insisted we buy one.  Did I mention that I have a great wife (except for her rules on rice pudding and tapioca pudding)?

It is one of the few tools in my kitchen that she will use, and actually enjoys using.  If I told her to go to the stove and make a cream sauce, she'd just stare at me.  However, last week, I told her to make a cream sauce in the TM when I was late getting home, and she made a great one :)

I had seen them on another cooking site and read all the discussion about them, which was fairly negative. At the price I never really looked into owning one.
Then last year when we were travelling we had camped at Tailem Bend in South Aust and one of the ladies there had one. She made us a curry and then rice pudding. My DH was absolutely sold on the idea and as we continued on our merry way to CAnberra he persuaded me that I needed one. Then he could buy an old 1928 Model A Ford and do it up!! In Bega NSW he eventually convinced me. When we returned home we had a demonstration and bought one.
I even took it away with me a few weeks ago. I am absolutely lost without it. DD who was home without the TMX discovered how hard it was cooking without it.

.............he has just got his old car. It looks kind of like a heap of rusty bits and pieces, but lovely all the same.

What a crafty DH you have Cookie1 - you have the TMX and I'll have the old car to do up.  You are the winner though, yours is fun, his project has a lot of hard work ahead of him ;D ;D ;D  You will just have to keep baking those cookies to take out to him whilst he is working on his project.  Happy days to you both ;) ;)

Hi Everyone,
When Cyndi O'Meara said that you could make vegetable stock paste without any effort, I fell in love immediately!  It used to take me hours to make stock and now I can make it in 20 minutes so easily.
I use the stock paste instead of the yucky shop bought stuff in just about every meal now.
Cheers,
K3

my only problem with making my own stock is that i'm so used to using the massel chicken stock in everything and i can't with the tmx chicken stock as it's not vegetarian obviously! lol
Title: Re: What made you buy your Thermomix?
Post by: mama_bel on June 08, 2009, 10:52:37 am
What led me to purchase it was the notion that I'd make more stuff from scratch.  Even though I already made heaps from scratch I did buy: Massel stock powder, falafel mix, brown rice flour, some dips and spreads and more.  I've only had mine 4 days, so I'm sure I'll learn more that I can do on my own in time. :)

I've replaced my food processor, juicer, blender, hand mixer, grinder, scales - and this is a huge benefit in my small kitchen, plus some of my old appliances were pretty cheap and inefficient.

I'll never part with it 'cos a) it's easy to use and b) it's easy to clean.  Other appliances I've owned aren't, which is why they sat in the cupboard and this (TMX) sits on the bench!

So far I've made risottos, pesto, soups, coleslaw, chopped vegies, grated parmesan, minced tumeric, blended smoothies, made ice-cream, jam, porridge, boiled eggs and more.  And I've only really touched the surface (it's been a busy 4 days and I've had a cold!)  I haven't even used the steamer yet!  Or the butterfly (whipping attachment)!  But I have plans...

You've done well in just 4 days mama bel - I think I just looked at mine for the first 4 days and was too scared to try anything. I just read all the books I got with it and gradually worked up the courage to try something which was potato cakes and that was a disaster as it is a lousy recipe and really needed a good tweak. This was followed by mashed potato which I got right but the glossy, cheesey version was one I soon became sick of and I have since modified both recipes to how I want them. The TMX and I are now best friends.

I bought my thermomix simply because I wanted something for me.  Something to inspire me, something I could "tinker" with and something that could take me away from baby-land for brief periods during the day.  When I went to the tmx demo (my first child-free outing in months), I fell in love with the machine and felt that it was just what I needed in my life.  I was wanting to get back into cooking (beyond survival cooking) but was struggling to find the time.  I just knew tmx would help me out.

On my way home from the demo I thought of all the reasons to tell my husband why I really needed and deserved one (you can justify almost anything if you really try!!).  Being a Mother (or parent) should automatically qualify you for a tmx in my opinion, but I had my back-up reasons prepared just in case.  Becoming a Mother in Ethiopia, our baby being so sick over there, contracting a rare strain of salmonella in Ethiopia that took me months to fight off, Paddy's hugely traumatic (and ridiculously drug-free) birth, Paddy's sleep condition (not sleeping for longer than 40 minutes day or night for months) . . . . . oh woe is me. . . . .  my poor hubby didn't stand a chance.  As it was, he thought it was a great idea and really encouraged me to buy one.  I shouldn't have doubted him!

Apart from my love of thermomix cooking and "tinkering with it" the other main reason why I would never part with my thermie is the change I have noticed in our eldest son.  He is greatly affected by the preservatives in many commercial breads and in other foods also.  He is so much calmer and settled now that we are cooking almost everything in our thermie.  It has been wonderful to see and I dread going places now where I know he will eat highly processed and preservative packed food.

I guess we all have our own reasons, but I doubt any of us would ever part with our beloved machines for even a week.

Chelsea  :)

For me - Thermomix was about health reasons. Grace's and my asthma was getting worse - frighenly worse! At work one day I got chatting to another lady about all the nasties that go into our food and how that affects our health. She pointed me in the direction of Cyndi O'Meara (author of Changing Habits, Changing Lives) which is about getting back to the basics and whole foods and eliminating all the preservatives, additives, colours, flavourings etc. Cyndi would often include recipes in her newsletters etc and she had the traditional way and TMX way.  If I was going to do everything from scratch I imagined I'd have to leave work. So TMX offered a oppertunity to have it all.  The closest I could get to a demo was driving 3 hours to a consultants home.  I knew before I saw it that it was a must - just for the sake of our health! XH kept telling me it would just be a fad and in a few months I wouldn't use it blah blah blah.  So, I came home with one on order and haven't looked back since!  I use TMX, the oven and occasionally a frypan. That's it. And as for our health.... neither of us have had asthma at all for 6 months!!

The added benifits since having the TMX is:
Cooking is quicker and easier
Less washing up
I'm more adventerous with the cooking
We eat new foods (ie. vegies) that we probably wouldn't have recognised in the supermarket
Work benifits from all the ad hock morning teas they get
Being more inspired to cook
Friends suddenly end up with free meals landing at their door
Girlfriends who are having a hard time with the kids/babies are getting a week's worth of meals cooked for them in one visit over a few cuppas.
Get to spend more time with DD
Shopping in the supermarket is a breeze - there are so many isles we just don't go down!!
Groceries are cheaper.
I could go on all night....

Although I am a consultant - I was a raving fan well before hand!!!  And now just like to show people what is out there and possible.

As Chelsea commented - I just wouldn't part with it!!

What wonderful stories we are reading in this topic.  Chelsea, my heart went out to you and it is so nice to see you are back on track with your family's health. ILB's purchase has also been life changing.  We all want the best for our children and with all the allergies and bad reactions some foods give our kids, I take my hat off to those young Mums who delve into ways to improve their children's diet & are prepared to do what it takes to make their lives as normal as possible. If only everyone had access to a TMX and put their children first.  Well done girls, what great mothers you are. :-* :-*

Thanks Judy.  I'm not sure about being a great Mum (speaking for myself only), but our thermomix certainly helps things along in the kitchen.  I just have to make sure I find time for my kids each day - they are in danger of becoming thermomix orphans (just joking - really).  Everyday I seem to love it more and more.  Not sure it is entirely healthy to have such strong feelings for a machine  :).

LOL!!  :D :D I can relate to all of that. Chelsea, I think I'm far from perfect too. But Grace will grow up knowing what good healthy food is all about and to take care of their bodies! Grace has just turned 3 and she has embraced the TMX too as part of life, weather I'm doing a demonstration or we're just cooking. Although - I do get told not to make her "ruin" her milo in the TMX - LOL!!

And Cookie - yes everyone thinks I'm raving mad!! Took the Wish Mag article into work today to show them it's not just a gimmick.

I think JB summed it up well at a cooking class one time by asking the guests if they thought that their friend/family member who had a TMX had joined a cult, because they they are obsessed with it!

JD- thanks for your kind words  :-*

I broke two food processors in two weeks and couldn't stand the idea of spending $400-500 on just an ordinary garden variety food processor...so without even having seen the TM, other than during my online research, I rang the office and asked when I could pick one up! Imagine my surprise when they said I couldn't! hahaha
Still, they organized a delivery demo almost immediately and the rest is history as they say. (Now I live, breathe, eat and sleep TM...as you would all know!) ;D ;D ;D

A friend in Adelaide suggested it to me because of my daughter's food intolerances and the huge amount of cooking I was doing to cater for her.

We were visiting and she had her demonstrator friend come and do a demo for my husband and I. We were captivated from the beginning

e had an old food processor that needed replacing, no juicer or anything else and had spent the previous 4 months trying to make everything from scratch with no gadgets

The TM has made life so much easier.

I've been away for 10 days and it is so nice to be home with our TM

A friend is a demonstrator and was worried about her first demo so we offered to be guinea pigs for her.  Little did we know that we would get hooked ourselves.

We have both hit the big SIX-OH this year and I had got my other half a very classy coffee machine for his birthday.  I then knew what I wanted for my birthday and waited 3 months patiently for it.   I've never looked back since getting it and it's really rekindled my enthusiasm for cooking.

I actually got the coffee machine before the Thermomix came on the scene.....  but the coffee machine was in self-interest really because he always made such a mess with the previous machine.   This one produces fantastic coffee and no mess.   Perfect - just like the Thermomix really!

I bought mine because I was intrigued by a discussion on eGullet - a food forum on which I have been active since '04.  That led me to the UK forum and thence to the Canadian as well as the various online videos.

I love appliances and gadgets - I have grain mills that range from a large, very old, hand-cranked, stone mill to my electric Nutrimill.

I have an extensive collection of appliances from the Art Deco era (20s and 30s) that are as decorative as they are useful.  The jewel of my toaster collection is the "Gazelle" toaster.  In my opinion one of the most beautiful appliances ever made.

I also dabbled in artistic pursuits during my life.  Mostly animal portraits and engraving in glass and crystal.  Part of the reason I like the TMX is that it has an artistic appeal to me.
Here's one of my engravings on a glass panel, done prior to when I developed arthritis in my right hand.  No longer possible for me to do this type of activity.

And that, in a rather large nutshell, is what made me buy my "Tuffy" the TMX!

I second that statement.  Love the etching - that wouldn't happen to be of your dog by any chance?  I also love old toasters, still think they toast better than the modern ones of today even if you do have to stand by and watch them. Have you ever written a book about your life andiesenji - would make interesting reading.

Not one of my dogs.  I had great danes for a few years in the late '60s/early '70s - very little grooming. Then fell in love with basenjis and bred and showed them for 30 years.  Still own one but can no longer get around the ring and taking care of puppies is too much for me.

The maltese engraving is of a top winning dog and was one of five I did for a client - the other four went into a window, surrounded by stained glass - she paid for all five so I used this one for display.
Some others can be seen here:   http://andiespicsfun.smugmug.com/Art/Andies-art-works-Engravings/2487033_E4Abb#130507210_9PXVg

I have not done any engraving since 2001.  The pastel paintings are recent practice pieces.  It's much easier on the hands.

I have a chef friend who would just love your art deco collection.  We had an Art Deco exhibition here in Melbourne earlier in the year and as George says - they are decophiles and that was what brought them together.

I do so love that toaster. Amazing. As for anything artistic-I instantly repel it. I am very hopeless. I can't even shove flowers in a vase!

I'm terrible with flowers, always have been.  I cut them either too short or too long and by the time they are in the vase, they look like they are ready to be tossed.
Also, I have some serious allergies to certain flowers - can't even handle them.  In my home I have freeze-dried flower arrangements that I buy from a local craft shop - they look good for a few weeks and then get composted.  I'm supporting my local economy and am not exposed to pollens and as she uses no chemicals, the environment is safer too.

Another talent I totally lack is being able to sing.  I think folks would pay me to keep my mouth shut!  Not only can't I carry a tune, I have no ear whatsoever for pitch.

How did I miss this ad Paul? Was it a straight out advertisement or a  notice for cooking classes?

I first saw the thermomix at a friends house and had to have it just because of the look of it. Didn't even know how it worked.

Hi Gert, it was an ad for a cooking class in a Saturday edition of the CP.  It was held at Forest Garden.  I rang the demonstrator and she said she was bringing a couple to sell, so I reserved on before I even got to the demo.  I just knew I had to have it the moment I saw the photo.

Ah I missed it. I haveb een to a few of the demos at Forest Gardens pretty smart to reserve one. My consultant had a new one in her car when she came to do the demo at my house. She was smart eh?

I'd been eyeing off a new Vita-Mix blender for a while - I've used my old Braun for about 7 years, and it's served me faithfully and well. I pretty much use it every day, so I knew when mine finally died, I would be going for a better quality one - most of the ones I was looking at were $1000+ anyway. Plus I wanted to be able to do ice etc. Not to mention, I've always wanted a grain mill, to make my flour fresh, as right now I buy in bulk and freeze it! Most grain mills (the good ones) can cost around about $900 pretty easily.

So when my mum told me she'd been to half a demo, I looked into it online. After the demo, I was hooked - here was the two machines I wanted most in one, PLUS a ton of other things I'd been meaning to get - rice cooker, ice cream machine, decent digital scales, steamer, etc etc etc. It was just a question of could we afford one, and how soon! Anything that will stgop us from going out to get fast food when we are feeling tired and lazy is well worth the money in my eyes. Plus I'd like to have more children, and I can totally see the benefits for healthy, cheap cooking. :)

Hi, i read a review on www.taste.com.au and knew then i wanted one.
i rang the perth number, had a consultant ring me 2 days later, and ordered it then, sight unseen.
i got it 10 days later, and Jo did a demo for me a couple of days later.

i just love it.
i keep telling everyone that they need one, and how good they are.

My husband loves it too.
 :-))
We had a party here last night, and i made so much in it, clean up was a breeze.

My father found the Thermomix website and forwarded it to me to check out.  I organised to attend a Demo and was sold.  It took me a year to save the money and now I finally have it, I haven't regretted it.

My youngest son has multiple food and environmental allergies and I have found that this gives me more time, more options and less cleaning up to do.  I no longer have to order bread online (at $20 for postage costs   >:( ) and freeze it when it arrives....now we have fresh, homemade bread-Yummy!

We are eating healthier.  The only trouble I have is (and I'm getting better at it) is converting recipes...no eggs, nuts, dairy, beef, coconut etc in our household  :(

My father is now looking at purchasing one within the next year to take with him on a caravaning trip...the possibilities are endless with this machine!  I can't stop raving about it!

My husband and I were looking for a replacement blender, that's all! Nothing too fancy, just one that would work a bit longer than the previous one that died just out of warranty. I asked some opinions on a forum I frequent, and someone (Spanner!) suggested Thermomix. It all went downhill from there. :D JOKING!

When I found out you could make rice milk with it, which would pay for itself within 2 years AND it has a 2 year warranty.. well.. I was hooked. I read the websites, watched the YouTube demos.. the more I saw, the more I liked!

My husband and I are on a very strict diet. He's especially sensitive to gluten, and I to dairy. Lots of other avoids, too.. the hardest being garlic, onions and sugar. (Can really make cooking a challenge sometimes) Even after 3 years on this diet, we still get frustrated about the amount of time we need to spend in the kitchen. Cooking everything from scratch, and our favourite dislike - the dishes!!

I've had the Thermomix since Christmas day and we've used it every day to make our breakfast, smoothie and usually something for lunch too. (So far, the risotto has really been "quick and easy") It really means a lot to us to be able to even say "quick and easy" because it's been a running joke for such a long time. There's usually just NO SUCH THING!!

So, whilst I can imagine living without it (we've done it for so long now!) I wouldn't like to go back to it. So far, I've noticed that we have a few less dishes (less pots and pans, the two whisks (!!) and the old blender that wasn't easy to clean) and we spend a little less time in the kitchen (which is a good thing!). I'm happy! My husband is happy!  ;D

Purplehat I'm pleased that the TMX is helping so much with your dietary requirements. It certainly seems to help a lot of people that way. Even those of us that don't have such strict requirements find ourselves eating even healthier than before.

Cooking was usually in the 'chore and bore' category for me. I've got chronic fatigue syndrome :( and was finding it difficult to get the energy to cook, let alone the enthusiasm. Add to that 2 small offspring whose repeated choruses of 'yuck' at whatever was put in front of them and the thought of x no. of years in the kitchen made me want to stick my head in the oven. Even DH was commenting about my ever-decreasing repertoire of meals. I read about the TM first on the simple savings site then read everything else I could find on it. I had to have one! I knew it would change my life. It has.

I used to have a very 'no-recipe, stand-back-and-throw' style, which is why things never turned out the same way twice, but cooking with the TM is more like following a chemical equation, and I love it! ;D ;D Add to that 2 little boys who are excited to see what turns up next and I have to say I am beyond thrilled. :-*

Nice to see the TMX has turned you into an enthusiastic cook Karen.  We may as well enjoy cooking - we have a lifetime of it ahead of us.  I overheard two elderly ladies once - one was saying she didn't know what she was going to cook for tea and was sick of trying to come up with ideas.  That is never a problem in this house - I think I will go to my grave thinking of all the things I haven't cooked  ;D ;D

That's wonderful news Karen. Your children will be cooking for you before long using the TMX. Our house is a bit like Judy's.  I have so many new recipes to try that I will need to live to 1000 at least. Gee I will be grumpy by then.  I keep all the recipes we like and then when I am lacking in inspiration I go back and do one of the favourites. I love looking through books and my million magazine cut outs to decide what we will eat for the week.

I first heard about the thermomix a few years ago, my auntie had been to a demo. Once I heard the price though I was very skeptical and thought it would be a big wast of money.

Fast forward a few years and at 25 I felt like I was 100, I had shocking sleep patterns, always tired and grouchy and although I wanted to get fit I could never get the motivation to exercise. After doing some research on fatigue etc I came across some info on the effects of our diet on fatigue, mood etc. I then bought a book entitled 'the 150 healthiest foods on earth by Jonny Bowden', this book changed my life and I decided to stop eating the copious amounts of c**p such as white bread and rice, sugar and junk food and actually give my body some nutrition.

At about the same time I was invited to a thermomix demo with my mum. I only saw the first half (sorbet, dip and salad) before having to shoot off for a dancing class (I had finally managed to get some exercise happening at this stage) however I was sold just on this. My Mum and I held a second demo with Dad, my boyfriend and my mums best friend and her hubby. All three couples bought one, our consultant had only been doing the job for a few months and had never sold so many at once!

The reason I actually bought the machine was I could instantly see how it could help me in my change to a healthly lifestyle. As I was now preparing fresh food rather than frozen junk I was struggling to cook and work full time and never imagined how I would cope when and if I ever had children. i could see how the thermomix could enable me to make fresh food from scratch without having to sacrifice hours of my time. The best example I can think of is butter, I make butter in 5 minutes with Thermie but would never ever use a butter churn as it would take hours and hours!

Since getting my thermo I would never ever part with it, I would have two if I could afford it. My thermomix has enabled me to eliminate just about all additives and preservatives from my diet as I make everything from scratch including butter(!), sauces, dips, yoghurt and just about anything you can buy in a jar. My boyfriend and I are now working on our veggie patch and tropical fruit garden so that I can continue to create delicious fabulous nutritious food with great ease with fresh, organic incredients.

Since this post is linked to an Introductions post, I thought I'd give my 2c worth!

I first saw the Thermomix at my sister's place. She'd been to a demo and bought one. This was back in '04, so it was a TM21. I'm a food lover and a hit and miss lazy cook. Some days I'll want to make a complicated difficult dish, the next bacon and eggs because I can't be bothered!

The Thermomix, to me, meant shortcuts. Easy bread dough, easy pastry making and quick custards, sauces and soups. It means a lot more to me now that I've upgraded to the TM31. It's something I use every single day for either whole meals, cakes, bread dough, bicsuits, pastry, soup, risotto or for the preparation of the main meal.

I thought I'd give this thread a bump, as it's great for people checking out the Thermomix to see what other people think of it, and how it's helped them...

I first saw a demo in September 2003 - I had three small kids, and was due to have another in three weeks time...  I've always made everything I could from scratch, including baby food, so the idea of making baby food quickly and without killing the enzymes caught my interest!  I had a big old stone grinder for grinding my grain, and a bread maker for my bread, bought bulk to save money and cut down on packaging, loved to cook, liked to juice but found cleaning the juicer annoying...  I also have problems with dairy, so was buying rice milk, so making my own would be much cheaper... the Thermomix was obviously perfect for me!

At the demo, the consultant made it all look so easy, and she got me to make the custard and I was amazed at how quick and easy it was - I was hooked!  I absolutely stuffed myself at the demo, the food was so delicious, then went home and popped... In other words, the baby arrived within a couple of hours of the demo (three weeks early!!!) - I must have eaten too much!  ;) lol

I told my dh all about it, and he said "If it'll save you time, get it!"  (What a sweetie!)  I did wait for our tax return though, then bought it with that.  So I've had one for over 6 years now - first I had the TM21, sold that last year to my sister and bought the TM31, and now I have two TM31's - yay!  I use it about 10 times a day, and wouldn't be without one!

Great thread, interesting read. I was excited about what TMX would allow me to hide in food. I have a 9 yo DS who has Aspergers syndrome. Feeding him can be very difficult, as he dislikes new textures and  flavors. When I saw a machine that could make sorbets and fresh juices using whole fruits, I was hooked. We love it for bread and pizza dough, haven't bought a takeaway pizza for months, and am really excited that I can make some really advanced things like hollandaise  sauce and they work! Couldn't imagine life without it now

Once I had heard about the TMX, I HAD to have it.  I am into all things that enable me to spend more time with my little girls (2 and 3).  I wanted to cook from scratch for them, but at the time I bought it, they were 1 and 2 years old, and I just didn't have the time.  Plus, many dinners were ruined because someone vomitted, did a poo, or I had to break up a fight (or a mix of the above).

I got invited to a demo coincidently while I was researching it online.  I promised my DH I wouldn't buy one that night, I waited until the next morning  ;).  The demo convinced me, I was  :o at all it could do.  Plus, I just couldn't find ANYONE online who regretted buying one!  I googled "TMX regret", "TMX broken", "TMX disappointed" etc etc etc, and NOTHING!!

DH and I love it, I make a much wider variety of food, with ease, and I know we eat MUCH more healthfully now.  DH tells all his male patients to buy them for their wives!

I knew I wanted to cut out all additives and preservatives and knew that a TMX would make that achievable - and it has. And so easily. It is worth every cent that it costs because of what it does for my and my families health. It's opened up a whole new world of cooking for me.

Interesting that this topic was bumped up today.  My friend Joycee stopped by for a visit, on her way to Las Vegas.  She got a Thermomix after seeing mine in operation.  She lives on a boat and doesn't have easy access to the internet so hasn't joined the forum.
I'm going to turn this over to her so she can tell her experiences.

Hi all.  As Andie said, I saw her machine last Xmas when I stopped by for a brief visit.  I live on a 45 foot boat in a marina and my galley is tiny, less than 7 feet wide, including the lockers (cabinets) and five feet long.  My counter space is 2 feet deep by 3 feet long, little room for more than a coffee maker and a toaster.  I ate out a lot, fast food and stuff than wasn't good for me because fixing a decent meal was too complicated.  I have a small veggie garden in pots (andie's idea) on my slip and the foredeck but other than snacking, I didn't use them much.  I bought the TM31 and love it, love it!  There are so many foods that I never ate because I had no way of fixing them but now I fix them all the time.  I have to go to the public library to get online so haven't joined this group.  I spent the money I was saving to get a new computer on the TM31.    I've got a lot of recipes from here, print them at the library and one of the librarians is interested in learning more about the machine, so the ripples on the pool continue to widen and touch more folks.  I have to get on the road now but I will check on the forum when I get home on Sunday.  I'm not going to Lost Wages to gamble, I have a consulting job there that requires me to go because I don't have internet  at home.
Bye, Joycee R.

That's great, Joycee - if I had the choice between a computer and a Thermomix, I'd choose a Thermomix too!!!  ;D
It must be perfect for your boat... our last house had the tiniest galley kitchen I'd ever seen, so the Thermomix was a God-send!!

While Joycee was typing, I prepared a batch of chicken, mushroom risotto for her to take along in a vacuum jug.  She stayed too long to have time for lunch before she got to her meeting and this way she will have a hot lunch.

She, like me, loves risotto but never, ever fixed it at home.

I've read every post on this thread & enjoyed them all.

What made me buy one.. I have very low confidence, especially in the kitchen. I don't enjoy cooking at all. And I'm not a great cook. But I have 2 small children & the reality is that I have to cook! And I'm sick of the numbers that I see on the ingredient panels of supermarket foods.

I'm married to an Italian who comes from a family of wonderful cooks. I feel incredibly intimidated & it's not unusual for me to get physically sick and/or migraine when I'm due to host a family function at our house.

I first heard about Thermomix a few years ago, when a friend of a friend bought one, but all I got out of the conversation was how good the mashed potatoes were & I thought "hmmnn lot of money for mashed potatoes". Then a couple of months ago, another friend became a consultant & I went along to a class. As the presenter commented, I sat there with my mouth open the entire presentation. The next week I had a demo, followed by 3 dreams, total obsession & selling it to DH.

I've now had my Thermomix for 3 weeks & 2 days & it's the best thing I've ever bought in my life.

For the first time in - ever - I am happy in the kitchen. I feel good about myself. I feel that I can attempt a recipe & if it doesn't work out, then I'll try again - because it's so quick & easy to do! .. Previously, I would have criticised myself & given up because I was "hopeless".

It's changed my life - and for the first time, I'm actually not dreading my son's birthday in November, when we'll be having the family over for a party. This feeling alone, was worth every cent.

You have put that so well salval and I feel so happy for you  ;D Most of us have amazed ourselves with what we have attempted and turned out. Once you start making a few basic things, you begin to realise how easy it is to avoid those numbers on packets.

Lovely story salval - by November your confidence will have you producing the best and easiest party food ever.  Start planning it now and knock all those in-laws off their feet with amazement.  It is so hard to cook for others who are good cooks but remember, we all like to have a break from cooking and so therefore can appreciate a sandwich if it was made for us by someone else !   Will be watching your posts to see what you have been making and will especially be keen to hear how DS's birthday party goes a bit further down the track. Say goodbye to your migraines and those panic attacks you have experienced in the past and say hello to the new you.  Well done  :)

Ummm, had heard about it and did some research and was very interested but the cost put me off. But it was there in the back of my mind for a year or so.
Then one of my mother's group friends suggested having a demo for one of our mother's groups. I was very much yes as I wanted one anyway, but was still at the some time in the future when I have the money thing.
Loved the demo.
Then spent months walking around the supermarket justifying the cost (ie what I could make cheaper).
Decided I had to have one.
Coming up for my birthday and bonus time and after saving had a demo at mine and got dh to buy it for my birthday.
so it was quite a long process but I had plenty of reading and planning time, lol. (had ridiculous number of hours on this forum before I bought, lol)
My children have no allergies (I have minimal - peanut and coconut) and are actually fine with additives, but I rather they don't have them and am finding it great making all their snacks etc from scratch.
I find a lot of our main meals are so much quicker and easier (or longer but tastier, lol).
We experiment more.
I'm not a sweet person so my kids are loving me trying out cakes etc.
Our food shopping costs are def lower.
Our rubbish is significantly lower. Hardly any red (rubbish) or even (yellow) recycling - guess buying more bulk items.
Have had the TMX 3 months now and think we are at the level we will continue to use it at. Most days 2-3 times, big days more, odd days say once a month none. And using it for 80%  of main meals I guess.
Quick easy pasta dishes for my kids (their fav) are a godsend.

I had heard about them on other cooking forums I've been on and everyone that had one seemed to rave about them. Then my hubby saw one in a house during his work and booked me in for a demo. He said that if I liked it I should buy one. Well who can argue with that? I fell in love at the demo and took his advice.

I'm still learning how to drive it, but have had it for three weeks now and have used it almost every day. I used it today to make bread dough for the first time plus cooked a soup for lunch - all ready in an hour. And this evening I cooked rice in it - I think it's just the best rice cooker. I used it earlier in the week for sushi rice and it came out perfect  :)

I've had my baby for about a month - saw it first on the episode of 'Come Dine with Me' and became obsessed with finding out about it. I went to a demo and bought it the same day........had to wait two weeks - and then - love love love  :-))

I use it every day - I cook a lot anyway so am not afraid of tweaking and inventing as I go - sometimes with more success than at other times - my kids are guinea pigs and are coping well! I think I must have made the hummus about a hundred times - and am now being asked for it by friends - so am now a dealer too .............happily I don't have to hang out in unlit alleys.........!

Nutella is a big hit, the sticky date pudding was unbelievable - I have never been a cake maker but now have the confidence to make more.

The other day I took it to visit my parents - made hummus, cheese souffle (which probably needs more tweaking - is it supposed to be runny in the middle?) cheese sauce for the cauliflower cheese and sorbet - did my own demo!!

I have realized that my idea of a blissful day off is supermarket in the morning - and bonding with my Bimbi in the afternoon - I need a bigger freezer.............

I have a chicken curry recipe passed down to me by my mum, who got it from Lee Kuan Yew (the old Prime Minister of Singapore's) mother - which works every time - is the easiest recipe ever and tastes wonderful.......my next project is to convert it, and, if I'm successful, will post it here, if that's ok.

Blah blah blah........... sorry for rambling but when a girl's in love...........what's a girl to do?!

Love Karen xx

PS - I also love the recipes you clever people post on this site - I've started a Bimbi recipe file - so am unashamedly stealing your ideas!

KarenT your excitement is wonderful and we all understand. Thermomix recipes are like wire coat hangers, they multiply when you aren't looking. I have a full file of tried and true recipes and a very over stuffed file of ones to try.
