Spiced Apple Custard Pie
Budget Busters Booklet
Tweaking
I think there may be a step missing from this recipe. Does anyone know if it has been corrected? The apple pieces are not chopped at all in the method and they remain in large and crunchy quarters even in the finished product. I realised this was going to happen part way through and got the pieces out of the custard before tipping it onto the base and chopped them a little by hand (very hot - ouch). They were still quite uncooked however when the pie came out of the oven.
Despite the apple it was quite a nice pie and would easily serve 8. My DH and children weren't overly keen on the spice (although I loved it), so next time I might try the custard without the spice but with a little sprinkling of cinnamon on top.
4/5 (for taste).

I made this again for a dinner we went to and everybody loved it. This time I sliced the apple by hand (only because I wanted nice slices) and didn't add the spices to the custard. Instead I just sprinkled a little cinnamon on top of the custard before the crumb went on. Very nice. :)

Sorry Chelsea - I'm of no help. Thought I had the book, but can't find it to comment on the method re chopping the apples.
Hope somebody else pipes up.
-
No worries. I think the apples just need slicing by hand or chopping roughly in the TMX before putting them in with the custard ingredients. :)
-
I haven't noticed this in the book but it sounds yum! Must make it.

Oh bugger! Should have checked BEFORE I started making this. Just tipped out the custard, washed the apples and sliced them. Made up a new custard. This time, no cinnamon stick and because I wasn't going to grind up the sugar and cornflour, 2 tsp of vanilla extract instead of 1/2 a vanilla bean
The custard that I turfed was full of little bits of cinnamon stick, so I'm glad I didn't cook it. will report back when we've tried it.
-
That is definitely an 'oh bugger.' :'(
-
It was very nice. Too much of the crumble for the amount of custard, though. I'd make only 2/3 of the crumble next time.
I think there's a step missing where you chop the apples in the TM.

Yes that's what I thought MJ. It is a nice cheap winter dessert though.

Hi all, relative newbie here,
I made this today but realised too late that the apples were too chunky.
Whats the fix?
Also what width/depth dish is a pie dish? I used a spring-apart tin but think it was a little too big as my custard barely covered my apples.
Thanks, Alicia :)

This was a yummy version of an apple pie. Handy as most of the ingredients are always on hand :)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/27/5umuna8a.jpg)

Most definitely. I like the things I have made from the Budget Busters book.

I think I might have to make this now too. It is a good wee book that I should use more often!

I would like to try this, need to cook something for tomorrow morning. Can anyone comment does this taste OK cold? Or is it best eaten hot?
.
-
I think this one would work cold too ElleG
-
Thanks Jamberie. Will make it and try it tomorrow.
-
This looks nice, would someone be able to tell me if the Budget Busters booklet is the same as Cooking on a Budget booklet please?

Thanks Jamberie, I checked the Thermomix site and saw the Cooking on a Budget booklet. Finally found the index to that and it appears to be the same.

This tart was very nice cold. It was lovely and spicy, I used some fresh nutmeg grated in as well. Cut the sugar back to about a quarter, and added 60g nuts to the base.
It was still quite sweet and everyone said they enjoyed it. I took note of previous posters and sliced the apple.
Oh, and it was GF, used quinoa flakes instead of flour. No one realised it was low sugar and GF ;D
