Post by: *jo* on November 03, 2010, 12:01:34 pm
If I am this excited about my kindle, who knows the extent of my emotion when I get my dehyrator!!! and no, none compares to my thermomix  ;D

Please may I pick the brains of you that have a kindle? I have downloaded a sample so I was impressed considering it arrived this morning and there was the chance of us evacuating today due to the fires...didn't stop me, LOL.  All safe here, any help immensly appreciated  :-*

Have you had a look at all the free books in the Kindle Store?    They are listed under "Kindle Bestsellers" on the Left hand side.   Loads of classics there to download and read for free.

There's a UK Kindle Forum at http://www.amazon.co.uk/tag/kindle/forum/ref=tag_cdt_hd_icdf which has some interesting things in it, but also a load of bickering so it's not the warm friendly place we have here.

Do you have any specific queries that we might be able to help you with?

I love this place http://dailycheapreads.com/ I get the RSS feed daily to my email client and I have about 100 free books on my kindle ( and more that were very cheap ) the greatest thing about this is that I have read many books that have been free that are not the genre that I would normally read.

I just looked at that site. It made me wish I had a Kindle instead of a Sony.

if you selected your sample from the computer (as I do) you will need to go to Menu, and turn your wireless on. After about a minute or so your sample will be downloaded onto your Kindle. Magic!

Oh so glad you are having fun with your Kindle and not worrying about the fires though you had better keep an eye out.

With the dollar above parity this morning I indulged and bought a couple more books. I love the one click and your done. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was only $5.41 I think. If you want something hot and girly you can read in about an hour then get for free Compromising Positions. Utter crapola but funny , and fun.

Be sure to get the Complete Users Guide for Kindle by Stephen Windwalker as that will lead you to a lot more web sites including  the Gutenberg Project.

I love a new toy.

Hi there Gretchen, I am thinking of looking out for Steig Larsson titles, thank you for the reminder.  Oh I am all for some utter crapola don't you worry, LOL especially when its free :-))  Just had a look and I can't see it for free???  Oh thanks for the heads up I think I need a good guide hehe.

Gosh you have to be quick. Now it is $4.40. Not worth it or maybe it is. But the prices change every day and more freebies are added as some are subtracted. Keeps you coming back eh?

Yes, the choice for Sony e-readers is improving. I bought the new John Grisham this morning for $18. Better than I can get at the shops. Not by much though. I eventually hope to have only e books as storing books just takes up so much room. I only read them once but DD passes heaps onto me and I keep buying. ;)

Not sure about that Jo. Why would you buy yourself a gift card to use at Amazon? I think that one is for snding to someone else and when they order something from Amazon they then give Amazon the gift card code. In any case it will show up on your credit card. You can do that by printing out the card and giving it to someone else or just send it to their e-mail addy.

Amazon has the latest John Grisham for only $14. But in a few weeks it could be cheaper.

Loving my Kindle.

Love my kindle. I just bought the Grisham, thanks for the heads up.
I can recommend, for those into crime/thriller/mystery genre, Lee Child books. Love em, love the hero Jack Reacher.
Another good read I downloaded recently was ROOM by Emma Donoghue (sp?). Fascinating read.
I love that so much of the classics are free -  I have been reading Dostoyeskvy (Crime and Punishment)!!

Grrr. The price of the Grisham was awesome. I read JD Robb books and received an email saying they were cheap, but it was for US only not Australia. At the moment Sony e reader doesn't have that much to purchase as it comes through Borders and A & R.  At least in a couple of years I will have read all the paper books I have and wow I'll have so much space.

Damn cookie...I have found a couple of books that have been US only and I anticipated that...went to Dymocks today and got a few titles to look for, I needed to see the hard copy to search for the download go figure   :P

DD went on the kobo site yesterday (where we buy for our Sony e reader) and found that there was 20% off and heaps of popular books had been reduced by about half. We had quite a buy up. I just checked the site this morning and they had all gone back up again!

I've had my Kindle for a year now and love it just as much as I did when I got it!!
Saves, money, trees, room on bookshelves and I am reading even more now - if that is possible.
I just found out yesterday that they now make a leather Kindle cover with a built in LED light which runs off the Kindle, not on it's own batteries.
I've got to have one.  That will stop the spousal mutterings when I'm reading in bed.

Faffa, what a shame but to be expected this time of year I guess. Start making your wish list like pandateddy. I am trying to read all my  bookcase books first before I start on my wish list. I have a real book in everyroom and my Kindle in my handbag so am reading several boks at once. Sometimes confusing  and now with the Cricket I have no time to cook.

ROFL Gert we have 5 HUGE bookcases in this house and a small one  :o :o so books everywhere.

The wait is for the Kindle with 3G so now am going to ask you all do I really need the 3G or is Wi-Fi ok and just load up before we go away anywhere?
Title: Re: Kindle has arrived!!!!!!, now what to do with it!!
Post by: gertbysea on November 28, 2010, 10:53:48 pm
Well I say the 3G. I have noticed that the WiFi in some places is locked up. In any case if you are away and cannot get either it goes to EDGE which is slower but you can still download.

Too funny faffa, two years ago I had a friend build  a bookcase on the longest wall in the house just for the books and CDs. Thank goodness it is deep as I have had to double up on some shelves.

I love being able to not worry about having a book to read at all times especially when in Thailand where books in English are scarce and very expensive. My backpack usually has at least a book for every day plus one backup. I always read and pass them on. When down to the last book my DH and I have to share by reading about 10 pages and tearing them out for the other to read. Desperate that is.

Funny you can go into many houses and never see a book. I know a couple of kids 10 and 12 who do not really know how to read but play with their xbox day and all night. Very sad for them when they want a job and can't write a resume. My own grand kids have never even had a TV but they can read , write and communicate. I used to feel sorry that they would not have a TV but now they are 4 and 9 I can certainly see the benefits.

What ever happened to comic books. At least the kids read them.

I only have the Wi-fi one ( we have wi-fi at home ) I currently have about 150 books on my kindle so I don't think I would ever have a desperate need of needing the 3G cause I have run out of things to read.I also have at least another 200 books on my PC at home that I could put on before I went away if I thought I may run out. I am not that fussed on buying direct on my kindle I tend to buy on my PC or laptop and then send to the kindle on purchase ( or to my husbands Kindle ), when purchasing books I like to read reviews etc and feel that it is easier to do on the Amazon website than on the Kindle version. I usually buy books and then every few ddays turn on the wi-fi to download them to the Kindle, having the wi-fi on all the time uses more battery power, so unless you are reading on more than one device  ( whispersync ) I can't see the point on it being on the whole time I am just reading.
If my job required constant travel I would probably get the 3G ....then again I would still have a internet capable laptop with me so I could still purchase anytime and transfer books that way, I have no idea if the 3G works out of the country ( which I could possibly justify if I was an international traveller ) but then if it did why would we have a special page to go to for an Austrlian purchase?

Post by: gertbysea on November 29, 2010, 12:59:40 am
Deeau. I can learn something from you for sure!  I don't have the WIFI or 3G on except when downloading so the battery will last  a very long time so far a month without recharging. The one with the light lasts a bit less if using the light as the source is from the Kindle. But for just using it to read no need to turn on the network.

Mine was a gift and a thoughtful one at that which I would mainly use for travel  but now I am addicted.  The reviews as you say are more comprehensive on the regular book site through the PC. In fact I don't know why anyone interested would not just  download the Kindle  for PC for free. I have had that for ages and love that Amazon stores all your books and you can download  yours mine and ours for one cost. I recently bought one for each of  my children  so we can all use the same account and all get the books for one price.

The reason we have to use our Aussie Address is because of the Australian laws on parallel importing. These laws are to protect the profits of Australian publishers. If you have a US account you can downoad everything but if you get caught  you might find that all of your content will suddenly disappear as happened to a friend of mine.

Yes the reason also for 3G is that it works world wide and places where there is no WiFi or where WiFi is password protected.
Also I don't travel with my PC but sometimes I would love to travel with my Thermomix!

We love our e reader. Had another big download on the weekend. I'm trying to read the books I have first but I keep going back to the e reader. Like you Gretchen we have books everywhere. We actually had some cupboards built in down one wall in our theatre (we use it as the lounge). They are about 60-70 cm deep and all along an 8 metre wall. They have sliding doors over them. These are full of books. DD likes to keep some of hers but I read mine and pass them on. She reads more than I do so I have all hers to read too.
DH reads on non fiction. Lately Model A books. But he spends as long reading those as we do reading fiction.
It is so sad when children come to school and they have no idea how to handle a book or even hold it. :'(

Oh  cookie 1 I am so pleased to meet another who has a love of reading. I will read anything. I even love junk mail. Your children will never be short of a friend nor will they ever say they are bored. How wonderful. When we all finish with a book, that is after it has been on circuit and comes back to me, I take it to Curves where we have a bookcase where people can purchase a book for $2 which goes into the  Breast Cancer bucket. Easy way to make some money.

I can throw a book out. I don't want to read it again . I might miss out on something new!

Yes that is sad but I bet those kids have good hand eye co-ordination from playing with electronic toys. somethig I am sadly lacking.

Gretchen my DD1 and her partner own 2 comic book/collectible toy shops in Melbourne so they are still alive and kicking and you would be amazed just to sit back and watch what type of person comes into their shops to buy. The variety is endless and the money young kids spend in there is even more amazing. There is talk down the track though of even comics becoming electronic - how that would work is beyond me but what a pity if it does head that way.  How can you collect electronic comics ??? Collectibles as such would probably cease to exist then.   In conjunction with their American comic suppliers they hold a free comic day once a year, the sales people dress up as comic characters & hand out the free books plus chupa chups for the kids and apparently it is a great day all round.

How wonderful Judy. No I don't think I would be amazed at the people who collect comics.A whole other world there isn't it. What a wonderful place to work. They must love it to own two delicious shops. next time I am going to Melbourne I will ask  you where they are.

Well I wouldn't mind if comics went the way of books on an e reader so long as kids actually learned to read and to enjoy the art of reading. We may have no choice if we keep cutting down the trees.

Hi.Jo. I've just got an I Pad.   What fun.   I have down loaded some apps from the Apple site to do with food,  and recipes that I can convert to TMX.   I am a bit slow with this new technology but don't mind asking.for help.  I think that the Kindle is great for reading books,  and that is why I bought the iPad.   I have read 4 books already,  but have discovered it is good for other things as well.   I am also using the diary  for appointments.   I am sitting in an apartment ::in Melb. at the moment typing this.   I just slip this into my hand bag and it is there. Much lighter than the computer to carry around.   one of our Forum members has put a very comprehensive report on the Kindle,  I am sire this will help you.   Good luck

On my Kindle I am reading Man And Wife by Wilkie  somebody or other. an old corny but freebie book.

I have lots on my amazon wish list to download. Just waiting for my daughter to open her birthday present on the weekend to see if she wants to share an account before I download more.

I have Monica's book on my wish list. any good?

Gretchen you are so clever being able to read all those books at once. I forget where I am in the story if I am reading just one book!  It reminds me of when my MIL lived with us, she was really into her movies and her and DH used to watch them together.  However, men being men, DH used to swap and change channels all the time during ads and he was able to pick up the threads of the next movie on another channel - poor MIL, didn't know if she was coming or going - completely unaware her son was changing movies on her  ;D ;D

Since buying my kindle this time last year I have read 27 books (6 of those non Kindle). I have enjoyed the following 3 books:

The Glass Castle – Jeannette Walls
A Reliable Wife – Robert Goolrick
Water for Elephants – Sara Gruen

CP 63 I have just finished The Glass Castle for book club. I loved it. We had Eat Pray Love before that and I didn't like it one bit.
I'm into who dunnits mainly, but enjoy other genres.

Gretchen Monica Mc's book is fine. It seems light but then I read for entertainment not to solve problems. I'm really enjoying it. DD has read The Time Traveller's Wife. I'm not sure what she thought of it. You are indeed amazing reading lots of books at once. The most I casn do is 2. One book, one e reader book.

Good one terstoo. Everyone should do it I say even if they read only  one book just t see what it is like. You can always uninstall it. I want to read John Howards new book Lazarur Rising. Went to  a book signing here in Cairns. $60 but only $19.24 on Kindle. I wanted to ask him to sing my Kindle. NOT!

Well I am a quick reader cookie 1 and if I start a book I must finish it even if it is crap. I agree with Eat Pray Love. Self indulgent shinola . I to love crime and thrillers. I may make an exception of not finishng Time Travelers Wife. As soon as it drys out I will have another go and that is it.

It's lovely to meet so many readers. Makes my heart go flip flop.

Gosh Gretchen, that would almost be enough incentive to buy a Kindle for most of us  ;D ;D

Yes I did buy it. Sucker for a bargain. Have only "thumbed" through  it at the moment but some tasty recipes. Lots of seafood.

The translation leaves a bit to be desired but for the price  you just gotta have it. If you don't have a hand held  Kindle download Kindle  PC anyway. Nice pics as well.

I was just trying to catch up on some of what I miss by not being regular enough with my attendance here and found the Kindle discussion was going strong!
I still love mine to bits and find I use it more and more.  I love mysteries, but am too tight to pay the shelf price for them so the Kindle lets me indulge in them in a guilt free way!
I'm very glad I didn't bother reading Eat, Pray, Love (it looked a bit soppy to me), but hope that you finished The Time Travellers Wife, Gert.  I struggled with it initially, but decided that I needed to suspend my disbelief and just go with it - and I enjoyed it immensely.  I read her next book, too, and hated it.
I have just bought the Thermomix Kindle book and found another one on their lists -
http://www.amazon.com/recipes-Maricruz-Thermomix-cooking-ebook/dp/B004CYEX80/ref=kinw_tu_recs_1?ie=UTF8&m=A24IB90LPZJ0BS
I wonder if there are more in the works ...?

Not got a kindle and wasn't interested until recently. My dad has an ipad and my step mum a kindle, but I felt happy with my macbook pro and my iphone.
But I read a lot on my phone and getting eye strain so the idea of a kindle has started appealing.

Gretchen - don't think I'll attempt Time Traveller's Wife then - have got a copy but I didn't even like the movie, so can't imagine the full book of it.

Other than dh we are all readers. My older two kids read a lot, dd2 (7) in particular reads for hours a day, has a very high reading age (teenage) and is the libraries greatest borrower, lol.
She is what I class as a real reader (same as me) as she can't see words without reading them, whether it is a cereal packet, a sign or a book.

I started Eat, Pray, Love, and now thinking I won't retry, lol.

Oh and for anyone with an iphone (and am guessing ipad) try drinkmalk.com for free downloads.

I was amazed recently went to a book sale - early on a Saturday morning (booktopia's warehouse clearance) and there were so many late teens/twenties girls there, I would have thought they would have all been sleeping in! Some people had hundreds of dollars of books.
Unfortunately I had all three girls so didn't really get to look for me - only got a couple, and there were hardly any kids books.

One of he best books I have ever read in my life is "Three Cups of Tea".A truly amazing story, he should have won the Noble Peace Prize but was pipped by Barack Obama.

Thanks a lot for this post.
I have received my Kindle this week and had no idea there were free ebooks around apropriate for it. Just bought a collection of the Bronte familly works to try it out (a very cheap buy), but due to our financial crisis and need to save, was thinking it had probably been a bad idea to buy it in the first place.
But i just went to the Guttemberg page and even found portuguese books (in portuguese)! Now I don't feel like I've wasted money!

I Just got my kindle this week as well - an Xmas present from my wonderful husband - but had to wait until now for it as it wasn't ordered until late November and there was obviously a backlog of orders to fill at that time of year.  I also got the cover with the in-built light, which I think is a great idea.

I hadn't heard of a kindle until I first read this thread last year but it just seemed like a wonderful and very sensible idea to me.  I love reading - sci fi / fantasy mainly, but I have to admit my secret - I am also a romance fan - they are very formulaic but I am a sucker for a happy ending and they are such light reading and I don't really have to concentrate too hard on them so I find they are a great escape at the end of a busy day but have made a list of books recommended on this thread so am looking forward to checking them out.  I spend so many hours going to a fro between home and the library and often find it very difficult to get back by return dates (even when I renew) that I was becoming very annoyed with myself and was looking for a solution.

I'll be doing a lot of travelling this year and that was the clincher to make the decision to get the kindle - I am assuming that they are OK to read on planes - I hope so otherwise I am going to be so lost - travelling from Australia to Scotland to Czech Republic to Romania and back to Australia - the thought of so many hours on a plane without a book is overwhelming - I am sure the kindle will keep me occupied during all my flights.

As said earlier we have a Sony e reader, not a kindle. DD and I share it but have now decided that we need to buy another one so that we can both have one. Although we have heaps of books here to read (can't resisit buying them) we have to take it in turns to use the e reader. The only sad thing about it at the moment is that they are out of stock here at the moment.
Cuilidh, you are certainly doing some travelling this year. I have a niece in law (nephews wife) who comes from Romania. She is a lovely person.

... mmm I've never been to Romania and I'm looking forward to my visit very much - although it is strictly business - my husband and his colleague are going round the wood suppliers as they both need wood for their work (they are both violin makers and Romania has very good wood available).  Hopefully will get to see a bit more of the countryside than the wood yards - my fingers are crossed.

I didn't realise there were Thermomix books for Kindle until I came back to this thread.

I've downloaded a sample of one of the Spanish ones and the recipes look interesting but the translations are even more interesting.... or even challenging   :o

Does anyone have either of the books in English and, if so, I'd be interested in feedback.

Thanks

I downloaded those 2 Spanish thermomix books to my iPad, and boy do those Spanish love their seafood!!!

Some of the translations are amusing.......glass is the THMX bowl, I saw "little grasses" (examples given of oregano, marjoram etc).  Only I few things that I would even consider making (being a non-seafood eater), but there is something compelling about collecting all the TMX recipes you possibly can!!!

Kindles are only available on line from Amazon.  If you order one be sure you select the appropriate options for an Australian model.  It is also nice to have the cover - helps protect the kindle and I think it is easier to hold with a cover, but it is an option and you do have to pay extra for it.

Not only is this forum wonderful for the wealth of info and support re TMX - I just found this topic. DH gave me a kindle for Christmas, but it only just arrived at my door yesterday, apparently there was a 9 weeks delivery for Aust orders. Thank you to all the wise ones who gave lots of info in the above posts. Now all that is needed is a TMX book for the kindle.  Between this forum, the iPad and the kindle returning for the start of the school year on Thursday will be quite an inconvenience.  :D  :D

Gretch do all the books that you have downloaded come up on all the Kindles you have purchased? And if so, if you have Archived a book, will it also be archived on your DH's or is he able to manage his Kindle separately?

We both have Kindles and have set up a separate Amazon account to handle kindle downloads.   Both our kindles are linked to this account so we can easily share books.    Although whether I would ever want some of his academic tomes is open to question  ;D ;D

Well the one I gave to my son  he re registered in his own name with a separate account but my daughter's and both of mine are on the same account plus so will my DH's when it arrives. All books can be archived and brought to home  on all the kindles on the same account so when my husbands arrives  anything he wants I can archive so it won't be on my reading list speak  and he can do the same.

Too easy it is. I am sure he will want to download all of Kiplings books and I may read some but not all. Just transfer the ones I want to my "home" and leave the rest archived.

So many books so little time.

My Kindle arrived last week (I've been using the app on my laptop and phone for a while now) and I'm a bit dissapointed to discover there are quite a few books I want not available. For example, I'm currently reading a series by Jack Kerley which has 7 books. Only number 7 is available here on Kindle. Number 6 is on the amazon site, but says it can not be downloaded in Australia at this stage. I believe it is the publishers putting the restrictions on, but it is so frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas where else I could try to source it (I've already tried many torrents sites...)

You  can change your address to one in North America to get  to books forbidden here but that is risky if they find out.

Australian publishers seem to have a strong lobby  in Parliament preventing the easing of the parallel importing laws for books which is what makes books so expensive in this small population country.

If they want a "Smart" Australia the pollies need to look at ways to make reading more desirable and to make books cheaper. Children's books are especially expensive. You can get wonderful children's' classics for free on the Kindle and they can use speech to text  which is useful in getting children to read and to SPELL!

Thanks Gretchen. Yes I've found loads of kids books free. What are the implications of putting down a North American address? I wonder if they would actually bother to prosecute if they found out, if it's only been a handfull of titles?

The reason we have to use our Aussie Address is because of the Australian laws on parallel importing. These laws are to protect the profits of Australian publishers. If you have a US account you can downoad everything but if you get caught  you might find that all of your content will suddenly disappear as happened to a friend of mine.

Gert

Ahem, I have a friend also who has done this...she put down an American address and then downloaded about 3 books that weren't available in Aus. The next morning she woke up to find that she had an email saying they had noticed she had changed addresses and asking for proof of residency in the US. Needless to say my friend quickly changed her address back to Aus (or got on the next plane back) but still just kept her US address on the account. The last thing she needed was a Kindle with a bad reputation  ;)

I have found that I need only to recharge about once every 3 weeks with my Kindle. The only time I turn on the wreless is when I download  and that  takes only a minute or two thus saving the batteries. I think you could easily read on the longest flight without recharging.

I have just read the Millenium Trilogy straight through using just about 1% of  the batts.

The other day I received my new cover with light attached and I do think using that would chew up the battery much quicker.

Hope you enjoyed The Millenium Trilogy. I still have the last one to read. What's the cover with a light like? We're waiting to buy another Sony and I may get a light on the cover this time. Possibly good for the van or plane.
It's wonderful the way they hardly use any battery.

I'm just finsihing "Blue Eyed Boy" by Joanne Harris. It took a bit of getting into but I've enjoyed it.

These are good:

The Hundred Foot Journey, by Richard C Morais
The Glass Castle, Jeanette Walls
A Reliable Wife, Robert Goolrick

I am in the middle of Lunch in Paris: A Delicous Love Story, but not much is happening and its abit predictable. About one girl who goes to Paris and falls in love with a French man, and discovers a love of cooking. At the end of each chapter are 3 recipes that she has mentioned just prior - hence the delicous bit

Cookie, the cover with the light is fine.  As the light sits in one corner, the bottom line or two of the opposite corner is not as brightly lit as the top, but it is still perfectly legible and I'm not sure that a really bright light would be helpful anyway because this could disturb others if you are using it at night (which, of course, is the idea behind the light in the first place).  I should imagine it would drain the battery fairly quickly, but I don't know how fast (or slow) the drain would be.

I'm half way through Snow Flower and the Secret Fan at the moment (recommended by one of our readers on the forum), and it's very absorbing, especially as we spent some years in Hong Kong before handover; it has made me better understand some of the attitudes of my local Chinese friends.

I've got Stieg Larsson's Girl with the Golden Tattoo (I think that's the name, anyway the first of the Millennium Trilogy) waiting for me next.  CP63, your Delicious Love Story sounds good - perhaps that will get downloaded in the next day or two.

I also just purchased a $50 gift voucher (once again, following up a posting from someone on this forum) so that I'm not charging loads of small purchases onto my visa card, hope it works.

Cuilidh I also enjoyed 'now Flower and the Secret Fan'.
Both memorable books. I think I mentioned that I've just finished Joanne Harris's book 'Blue eyed Boy'. I ended up enjoyoing that too.
I bought our second Sony e reader this morning. Now we will each have one and there will be no problems taking it away when either of us go or we go together.

I have the kindle and the cover with the light and it doesn't seem to drain the battery too fast. We took our kindles camping and it was awesome at night. We could read in bed without using a torch. I read a bit at night with the light and only recharge every few weeks. I'm reading a "real" book at the moment and I miss the lightness of the kindle and the little light. Our bedside lamp lights up the room so much and I feel guilty reading while dh is sleeping.

I bought the power adaptor for it, which makes it easier to recharge when I'm still reading it.

I'm really looking forward to taking the kindle with me when we travel, esp when we go to PNG for 3 weeks. Last time I took 20 books with me, but this time I can take dozens for a lot less weight. I told my friend she had to buy a kindle coz I wasn't bringing books with me this time LOL

Take care, the Millennium trilogy is totally addictive. I read all 3 volumes on my vacation, on the summer of 2009. I read them in Portuguese (although I found out later they were note translated directly from the Swedish, but from the English translation  >:( )
They were huge, so Kindle version must be much more practical.
I am reading (rereading actually) Anne of Green Gables. And I've got the whole collection of Lucy M Montgomery to go through, thanks to one of those free books sites  ;D

I found 1st of the Millenium trilogy very hard to get into, but once you work through some of the characters and the mystery grabs you, you will have to read them all. I have about 4 chapters to go in the final one now...

With the iPad the screen is lit,  and can be adjusted to brightness.   This is probably why the reading time is shorter than on Kindle and Sony.  I read a lot,  probably too much.  have read a lot of Crime and all of Lee Child's Reacher books.   I enjoy well written works.  The iPad has opened up a lot of new authors,  as you can often have a sample read before you buy.  some are really poorly written.  I like books where the 'hero' is strongly independent.  I refuse to read crime that deals with violence against children.  I have enjoyed the recommendations other Forum members have made and will follow these up.   I mostly read when I go to bed, and as a poor sleeper consume lots of books. The BIG disadvantage with this type of reading is that you can't pass the books on,  as you can with hard copies.

For sharing on the kindle, we discovered if you deregister your kindle and, for instance, re-register it in my name, my books are in the archive and you can transfer them to your kindle and then re-register it back in your name and the books will still be on your kindle. Not sure if this is legal or not... but we've done it amongst ourselves.

If you are transfering books from one Kindle to another  you can do  it via computer or wireless. Just turn the Kindle on to your network and go to sync and all books are transfered  in about a minutue. Too easy, even I could do it!

Cuilidh, it's very easy.  Go to Amazon and log into your account.

Go to the 'Payment' section (2nd part under Orders), under Gift Cards you will see 'Apply gift certificate/card to your account'.  Click on that, (you will need to sign in).
There's a box where you paste the claim code of the certificate that was emailed to you when you purchased it.  Then click 'Apply to your account', that's it, very easy.

You can view your balance at any time by going into that Payment section and clicking on 'View cert/card balance'.

Julie.  :)

The kindles need to be on the same account, don't they? Just trying to share books with my sis's kindle and the only way I can do it is to register her kindle on my account and transfer the books out of archives.

I bought a cover for my Sony e reader this morning with the light in it. I'm very impressed. The light runs off a separate AAA battery and it curves beautifully onto the text. It would have been useful the other night when our power went off.

Question for Gert:
The kindles need to be on the same account, don't they? Just trying to share books with my sis's kindle and the only way I can do it is to register her kindle on my account and transfer the books out of archives.

Yup that is right.  Just back on after 3 says without any power. The light on my Kindle cover was very useful!.
