Hi Lands, my consultant sent me this dip for French onion - haven't tried it and usually just make the one with the packet of french onion soup/cream cheese.
2 medium sized onions
2 tblspns butter
250g cream cheese
1 tspn vegetable stock concentrate
Chop onions on speed 7 for 3-5 seconds.
Add butter and cook 10 mins at 100o on speed 1.
Allow to cool.
Add cream cheese and stock concentrate and mix for 20 seconds on speed 4.
Serve garnished with chopped chives.
For the corn dip - I just mix a jar of sweetcorn relish with 250g cream cheese
Members hints
bigTcup - serves this dip warm.
Chelsea - had no veg stock concentrate so just dissolved a heaped tsp of chicken stock powder in 2 tsp of hot water and mixed that in.
Brumington - has made using yogurt cheese instead of cream cheese.
Lozzylooloo - The only problem I have with the cream cheese based dips is how hard they are when I get them out of the fridge. I used a combination of cream cheese and sour cream on the next batch - same yum flavour, slightly softer texture. Very happy.
Snappy - Instead of the veg stock (which I'm not much of a fan of) I used about 1 tbsp of FOSM (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=6744.0).
Jess ums - I added in a teaspoon of vinegar and it was YUM!
-
Thanks cookie1 - had intended to, but too much on :-* :-* :-*
-
My pleasure-it was something I could do.
-
I made this for Christas day and it was perfect, beyond perfect. But have made it a few times since and haven't quite made it as well. Husband said after the 2nd attempt that perhaps there was too much stock concentrate in it so lowered it and the third wasn't as good either and I think I increased it back to the oignal amount for the next attempt and it was better again (tip: never listen to husband ;))
-
never listen to husband ;))
Got it, will remember that Roxy. ;D ;D Glad someone tried it. It is the only recipe I have posted without actually trying it first but felt that my consultant wouldn't have emailed it to me if it wasn't any good.
-
Ooo sounds yummy! thanks :-*
-
this is yummy and as i couldnt get french onion dip over here i jumped at the chance to make it and everyone loves it ..half the neighbours asked for the recipe at our neighbourhood party!
thanks jd..yet again!
-
Bet the neighbours love coming into your house for a party Frozzie, sounds like you are impressing their taste buds :D :D :-* :-*
-
I gave this one a go too and it was very nice.
-
How did I miss this one? It's now on my list too.
-
You could actually use dried onion flakes I think, for that traditional kick of onion...will give this one a go Cookie, looking at Christmas stuff again...(ALREADY!)
-
I was skeptical how this would taste. Having only ever tried shop brought FO dip I thought there was no way this could taste right, but wanted to try it anyway!
Well yummo! I will make this again.
Thanks
Cookie
-
Help needed. I would love to make this but don't like the veg. stock concentrate. What and how much of something else could I use?
-
perhaps JD used that instead of a vegetable stock cube?
-
Thanks for this recipe...it was great ;D
-
I still haven't done this one girls, as I said, it came by email from my then consultant and I thought it must have been good for her to send it to me as she had never sent much else to me. I would sub it with 1 tsp any stock powder Chookie, chicken or vegetable would do the trick. It certainly has the thumbs up from the reviews.
-
Thanks JD, I weakened and made some vegie concentrate. I changed the recipe a bit, put in 2 tomatoes and reduced the salt to 50g. Have put it in small plastic containers and will freeze.
-
ACW you could substitute whatever you ilke its just to add some extra flavour..a neighbour of mine adds a sauce base in powder form..you could play around and add whatever i think in that area like a dried soup mix to the same amount or to taste really, or any kind of substance like that, gravy powder?? dont know experiement!!
-
I made this again today as it was such a hit. This time I served it warm....yummo
-
I am trying this dip today will let you know how it turns out.
-
Made this yesterday yummo the only thing I found was the stock cube didnt mi x will have to crumble it next time. Have saved some for potato jackets tonight.
-
We really loved this dip when I made it today. I have run out of veg stock concentrate, so I just dissolved a heaped tsp of chicken stock powder in 2 tsp of hot water and mixed that in. Yummy!!!
-
I was only thinking this morning, I wonder if there's a recipe on here for French Onion dip. Dopey me! Stupid question. Of course there is!!! :D
French onion is a family favourite!
Will definitely have to give this one a go. Thanks JD!
-
I made this today to take to a family picnic. What a hit! My boys are very particular about their french onion dip. They certainly made short work of it. Good job I kept some at home for me to take to work for my lunch tomorrow.
Highly recommend it!
-
This is still the only recipe I've posted that I haven't tried - I will do it this summer, I will do it this summer she writes on the board 50 times ! Glad you are all enjoying it.
-
JD i shared this recipe again with family in oz and made it for them while we were visitng and they all loved it as usual..i have found it best with a chicken stock cube ground up and mixed in..gives it the yummiest flavour and beats any bought stuff by a mile...i wont buy dips any more...too many good ones here to try and JD summer is just around the corner :) also loved a smoked salmon one on here with walnuts in it..will have to find it and post something there too yum yum (so much for shedding kilos...impossible when you own a thermie lol..its all too good to avoid hihi)
-
Thanks frozzie, nice to see you showing your family your favourite recipes from the forum whilst visiting. Hopefully by the time you go home they will have everything down pat.
-
I made a trio of dips for a work morning tea the other week. I did the garlic and herb, and the beetroot dip (both from EDC), and this french onion dip. The french onion was my favourite!
-
In the above recipe adaptation for corn dip you say "I just mix a jar of sweetcorn relish with 250g cream cheese". This may sound dim and I hope you don't mind me asking (I'm not an intuitive cook and find that I need explicit instructions - which means that I will probably eventually drive everyone here nuts with all my questions), but do you mean that you add the sweetcorn relish to your FO dip, or you simply make a corn dip from the relish and cream cheese?
-
Corn relish dip is separate. And terribly yummy too!
-
I did the french onion on the weekend and loved it. I also made a sundried tomato (EDC) and it was pretty good too and so simple.
-
I have also made the sun dried tomato dip and agree with you on all counts - delicious and most definitely a repeat. I currently have some in my freezer and hope that it is just as good once it has de-frosted.
-
Cuilidh, ask any question you feel you need to if it is going to help you. The more questions you ask the more confident you will become. Try the corn relish dip, it is so simple but delicious and I like to serve any leftovers over a jacket baked potato.
-
I have finally made this dip! Having visitors tomorrow so made 1/2 quantity of this one and as I'd just made a batch of caramelised onions, I mixed a handful of them with 125g cream cheese and a 1/2 tspn vegie stock concentrate. It was lovely and I'm sure would have been tastier than just the sauteed onions.
I do Amanda's version of caramelised onions which is - place in the TM bowl 4 sliced onions, 35 ml olive oil, 25g brown sugar, 25 ml balsamic vinegar. Cook on 90o/30 mins/reverse/speed 1 then on varoma temp/15 mins/reverse/speed 1.
The rings have a tendency to get caught around the blades which means some of them don't get that lovely caramelised look so I would suggest cutting the onion in half then slicing in approximately 1/2cm wide slices. If you have a batch in the fridge, when you have a BBQ just toss them on the hotplate to warm up.
-
Yum. I have been looking for a good caramelised onion recipe. Have made the French onion dip numerous times now with the sauteed onions and it never fails to be a hit!
-
Really nice - thankyou
-
Also try this recipe for onions.

I made this in combo with another recipie of Sweet and Salty Onion Relish (just sauted 1 onion in half butter) and added the premade onion relish in when both had cooled.
VERDICT: Delish! Cant wait to make my next batch!
-
Msde this yesterday to take out this afternoon, its very nice, wasnt sure at first, but just had some on edc focaccia.
Thank you
Hally
-
I just posted this recipe translated (with link to here of course) on the French forum as i use it fairly often and am always asked for the reicpe and end up giving the translated version.....more people to love it :)
-
Thanks for bumping Hally. I'd miss this one but did think about looking for a recipe after seeing the FOSM recipe. This will do nicely.
-
I made it with caramelising the onions, next time i will try FOSM.
H :)
-
personnaly I dont like it with caramalised onions and much prefer the original with the onions cooked for the 10 minutes...yum!
-
I was looking for a quick dip to take to a BBQ this afternoon. I literally had 15 minutes to spare before we walked out the door and a load of washing to hang.
Onions cooking = hang washing out.
Although I had to put in about 2 1/2 tsp of veg concentrate before I got a taste I liked.
We had 1/2 hour drive during which I put it on ice and again another 1/2 hour in the fridge when we got there before the nibbles came out.
It was DELICIOUS!!!
-
Made your French onion dip last night Judy and it was sensational. Big hit! Used the veggie stock and was very pleased with the outcome. It didn't last long and even the fussy niece's loved it!

can I ask why you wanted the french link??? or are you just curious at looking for french recipes??
-
Just love to read a bit more French and love my Thermomix, so it's a site I would love to visit. Thanks for the link.
-
no problem :)
-
Sorry I seem to ask alot of questions but I am not overly confident yet.
Can this be made the day before required?
Thanks
DG xxx
-
yes no problem DG as long as it is obviously kept in the fridge :)
-
This is so good! Amazing how you get so much flavour from just a few simple ingredients - never been a huge fan of bought french onion dip but this is a winner.
-
Thanks for this recipe. French onion is one of my favourites, so it was exciting to make. The flavour was slightly more subtle than a shop-bought one, and yet it the best word to describe that flavour is "authentic". It really did taste like it was made from all natural ingredients instead of a bunch of chemicals.
-
I made this today using yogurt cheese instead of cream cheese cause that's what I had in the fridge. Dipped carrot sticks and homemade cheese biscuits. It was absolutely beautiful. Kids (3 & 18 mths) loved it. A very easy recipe.
-
Nice to see you are all enjoying this recipe.
-
This was hit at a luncheon today, along with Cookie's BPC dip.Everyone loved it.Thanks JD :)
-
My daughter requested this for her 9th birthday party and it's a great hit. Thanks again for the recipe.
-
Nice going girls, even the kids are enjoying this one :)
-
Love this dip.. Was so happy when i made it ages ago.. One of my all time favs..
-
How did I miss this, I'm going to make this for mum's on Sunday
-
Lots to miss on here suzanne.. But they pop back up eventually!!
-
I know and I have so many printed off ready to try and then the list gets longer and then the days go by so fast I just want it to slow down
-
ooooh thank you will definitely try! :o ;D
-
Hi 4getfulelephant. Welcome to the forum. Would you like to go to Introductions and tell us about your thermomix story?
-
Hi girls, would this dip go well with cheese crackers? :) I've never had French Onion Dip before so I'm not sure what it tastes like :-[
-
Hi Amy, this will be fine with cheese crackers. We eat this with any sort of crackers and have even put a bit in mashed potatoes which the grand kids love. :D
-
Its yummy amy and goes with most things.. We have had it with a variety of crackers both bought and homemade, chips and veggie sticks.. All good
-
Awesome, thank you mab and Kim! :D I do like the mashed potato idea too ;)
-
This was delicious, thanks Judy :D
I had tough competition though, someone else had made a scrumptious carrot and cumin dip... :-)) ;D
-
Made yesterday -yum!! I have run out of veggie stock concentrated (!!!) so I used a few shakes of herbamere salt. Very happy, but think the VSC would definitely add more dimension. The only problem I have with the cream cheese asked dips is how hard they are when I get them out of the fridge. Could I sub in sour cream or natural yoghurt with half the cream cheese to make it softer? We've already finished one batch, I hope to make more tomorrow ;)
Thanks for another yummy new family favourite :)
-
Just to report back that i used a combination of cream cheese and sour cream on the next batch - same yum flavour, slightly softer texture. Very happy :)
-
That sounds a good idea lozzylooloo, it annoys me too when dips thicken up and you need a knife to spread them.
-
Just made this dip for an adult nibble plate at DS birthday tomorrow. Instead of the veg stock (which I'm not much of a fan of) I used about 1 tbls of French onion dsoup mix that I got the recipe from this forum somewhere.
Dip tastes fantastic! I'm so impressed. Now I've got to find that FOSM recipe again so I can make some more!
-
Here it is snappy http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=6744.0
-
JD you are a champion!
-
Thanks snappy, glad to help.
-
Just made this is it was yummy, not sure if it was onions or not (one was realllly strong) but it was really tasty. I added in a teaspoon of vinegar and it was YUM!
My old onion dip was made with a packet of onion soup, a can of reduced fat cream and a teaspoon of vinegar. But this will now be my go to recipe :)
Thanks ;D
-
Thanks Jess.
-
Only one word...... YUM!!! Everyone raved about it :-)
-
Glad you liked it Auspicia.
-
Sounds delicious and will try it for sure!
Thanks Cookie
-
I made this today, it was fantastic. I didn't have any stock paste left, so I used 1 tsp Vegeta veg stock powder and 1 tspn of my own homemade veg stock powder. Tastes better that the shop one. Yum
-
First review in ages for this one, thanks PP.
