This was really lovely and very filling which is just as well as it only made 4 servings for my family :-)). The whole family enjoyed it. I also made the dairy free sour cream which was lovely stirred in and also the tostadas which was a really nice change from bread/toast. Very easy to make and while it was cooking made the tostadas. Great winter night soup.

Omnomnom - I can't wait to try .. Thanks for the review!

I finally got around to trying this one .. The flavour profile is basically the same as the meatball soup also in the book, however this one uses less water and so is much richer - almost gravy or sauce-like ..
Personally we prefer the lighter version, but did enjoy this served with a good dollop of greek yoghurt to cut the spice a bit ..

Where do you buy black beans? I've often looked in the supermarket but haven't found any yet :/ maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot.

I buy canned black beans in my local gourmet shop ( la Goya brand) and I think a lot of bulk produce and Asian grocery shops would have dried ones, just have to soak them overnight before cooking them. I think you could sub kidney or black eyed beans with similar results. All beans just taste of, well, beans......

I can't buy locally either so I ordered from here: :)

Yes they are not easy to find - but I was able to get mine from the local fruit and vege market.

Thanks for the info :) I'm kind of pleased I'm not the only one! I'm very surprised they are not stocked in supermarkets though!

Whatever you do, don't use chinese black beans instead (the tiny wrinkly very salty ones used in black bean sauce!)
-
Oh dear Bonsai! Do you speak from experience ;)

No, but I have seen a recipe which calls for them and I'm sure it's a mistake as it's a recipe for black bean and beef nachos - I would have thought it would need black beans, not chinese salted ones especially using 160g! Bur maybe I'm wrong !
