Job Hunting
« on: October 18, 2012, 07:16:34 am »
I was informed yesterday by my boss that he would not be renewing my contract in the New Year - he wants someone with a different skill set.  I think there is more to it but I am very thankful I have a lot of time to organise myself for the future  :)

I have until very early March next year - which sounds like a long time, but it allows me to shop around and get the right job for me.
I did think that was here - but with the new boss coming in at the start of the year (after my previous boss was forced out), other organisational changes that have been leaving a sour taste in the mouth of a lot of people, it seems like a good time to be moving on.  Unfortunately this lines up with what I can see as a lot less jobs being advertised for geologists with my experience - but I'm sure something will turn up *grin*.

I'll certainly miss all of my team here - and it is hard not to start the leaving process right here and now - even though I have 4 months to go.  In a way it may have been better to be paid out and leave straight away - but I haven't been afforded that luxury.

Anyway, just wanted to share and find out who else is out there in the process of finding themselves a new position and wish you all the best of luck!

Sorry to hear that dg - wish you all the best with your job hunting. You sound very positive in spite of it all which is a good way to be.

Sorry to hear that. I do know how that feels.

Dh and I lost our jobs with no warning and /or notice in August and are still job hunting. It meant we lost our home too.
We have moved house 2 weeks ago, and searching for a job is a daily activity.
This week DH had an interview for work in Canada which we have now vetoed, a no from a job in Wiltshire, an an interview we had in Wales 2 weeks ago now wants to talk some more.
We have a very specialist skill set and over thirty years experience each which is good in some ways, but bad in others as there are younger and cheaper candidates out there.

I wish you all the best, and hope it goes well. I suggest you start looking straight away and I send you strength for it all.

This forum is full of lovely people who send positive vibes and have helped me so much to get through these last few weeks.

Thank you deedub, gertbysea and Droverjess - I appreciate your support.

Gert I'm in Thailand at the moment - but there certainly aren't many places needing geologists here *grin* - well not with my skill set  :)  I'll probably end up moving back to WA, but the east coast closer to family would be nice too.

Hey Droverjess - best of luck to you and your DH.  I know I am lucky to have the opportunity to look whiie I work and I will certainly take your advice and start looking now.  And I definitely agree - this forum is full of lovely people who are there to listen and provide lots of lovely supportive messages.  It's great!

Thanks everyone.

All the best in your job searching Fiona, hopefully a move back to Australia will be on the cards if that's what you want.

Good one. Big mining companies are making a mess of the place but no worries our government gives their government a million bucks a day.  It takes about two hours to fly from CNS to PNG but you can hardly make a phone call, the fax is useless and a letter takes about six weeks to get there and back as it is never delivered.  A  person just out of school can get a job working on the drill rigging at $50 an hour. 4 weeks on and two off.  They hardly ever have to do too much as the drills are always breaking down. The food ain't bad and the fishing is great.
