Title: Does anyone have an iPad?
Post by: kezza on December 28, 2010, 01:05:16 am
I bought an iPad to store recipes in and to have it in my kit hen for quick and easy reference. However I cannot work out how to transfer them on to the iPad.  Has anyone done this?

I won an iPad in July and apart from games, I haven't used it much.

However just before Christmas, I did say to my hubby, I think I've found a better use for it. The Kitchen!!!

So much better than running back and forth from the computer. I don't like printing recipes out too much unless they're going to be used constantly. Bits of paper get lost so easily.

Finally the iPad can be used to better potential. I just need to buy a stand for it.

I'm not technical though so I haven't worked out how to save stuff or favourites etc.  I just have to go looking. Baby steps....

I would love an iPad! I have a MacBook which is kept in my kitchen. I'm just frustrated that I can't get it to work wirelessly with my printer, even though the printer has wireless capability.

I use the app ever note which is free and just cut and paste my recipes into it. I have it on my lap top, iPhone and iPad so it syncs between all of them. Loving it  ;D and the iPad too ;)

Apparantly THermomix are developing an Ipad/Iphone app that will be released in the next few months.  My demonstrater was telling me about it and she said it is going to be amazing!!  One to look forward too!

I have a recipe app on my ipad that allows me to store recipes I find online and I can add my own too - however I get a bit tired of typing my thermie recipes in so I have gone back to writing them in to a recipe journal.

I have an ipad too, and i haven't saved recipes to it as yet. I have used it in the kitchen while cooking though and it was very handy.  My geeky husband put the shopping list into it and took it grocery shopping one night.  I would be more worried I was going to drop the thing!  He said he sat it in the seat of the trolley......he must of looking incredibly nerdy (he looks it at the best of times!).  At least with an iphone you can look like you are texting or something while you consult your shopping list.

Good news about the ipad/iphone app on the horizon!

An iPad application would be awesome! I hope it comes soon. I dont have an iPhone but that would be good too.

Modern technology. What ever happened to the old CWA cookbook days? Now we need technology all the time.

So if any of us spy a guy shopping with an iPad, it has to be your DH Jodi  :D :D :D  I'd be afraid someone would pinch it when my back was turned.

I have an I pad ,  and love it.  Not technically very savvy but will have a go. I am traveling with it for the first time,  and am typing this on it.
I bought a recipe folder app but haven't used. It.   At the airport, a young man, with black spiky plastic things stuck in his ears and nose sat next to me ,  he was using an iPad.  I asked him lots of questions about traveling with one.  he was only too happy to share his knowledge with an elderly woman. I don't mind looking dorkey  but this comes with age. I look forward to learning more about using it.

I would really love, LOVE an ipad.

I often cart my my macbook to the kitchen to use a recipe i've seen online.  An ipad would be so much cuter :)  DH says he won't buy me one as that would mean I'd no longer use my laptop :)

Since 2011 is our year of saving and I bitterly resent giving the UK government ANOTHER 2.5% of my money it looks like I won't be getting one  :-))

:D :D :D :D Oh Chookie that was so funny, your description of the guy at the airport and good on you for giving him the time of day.  Some of them are really very 'normal' under their abnormal appearance.  I know you are not one to let an opportunity pass you by and he probably taught you quite a bit in the short time you were chatting.  :-* :-*

My DH gave me an iPad for Christmas, couldn't lose mine as he had it inscribed on the back "Mrs.Thermomix"  :D :D I'm driving both my DH and DS nuts with all the questions.Maybe I need to travel like Chookie and get a fellow traveller( preferably better looking) to answer all my questions. :D :D

I have an iPad too (well DD won it in the school raffle, so technically it is the FAMILY'S  ;)) I use it in the kitchen but have to look up the recipes that I need - I haven't got any further than that. An app would be great!

Amanda, my DH suggested last week that I take it shopping too!!! He is also one of the biggest computer nerds out!  :D :D :D. I'm more of a pen and paper girl - shopping lists, diary etc.

What is this "shopping" thing of which you all speak?  ;)

I'm afraid I do almost all of my grocery shopping online.  I've got it off to a fine art now and rarely forget anything.  I swear it works out cheaper too as I don't get caught out with impulse buys.  I use Ocado (I'm UK based) which ONLY sell online from warehouses so their stock control is brilliant, everything's always in good condition and has a long date on it.  They're not a "cheap" supermarket but its all good quality.  I also menu plan so that I can shop effectively ....

I may sound super organised but food is the only place that I am organised  :D

I would love an iPad! I have a MacBook which is kept in my kitchen. I'm just frustrated that I can't get it to work wirelessly with my printer, even though the printer has wireless capability.

The way the wireless (Bluetooth) system is set up, only graphics will print - photos, etc.  My printer is the same way and I get around it by taking a partial screenshot (Command shift 4) selecting the area I want to copy and hitting return.
I then print the screen shot.

As long as you have paired the wireless device with the MacBook, it should work just fine.
I don't know why they don't fix it so it will print documents but that is the way it has been since these wireless devices were introduced.
I had a problem with the first Bluetooth accessory I got for the printer (it didn't come with one) but I returned it and got one that worked the first time and it works with the portable printer I take with me when I travel.

The printer I use for regular printing is an "all in one" Epson scanner, printer, copier (NO FAX because I won't have one in the house).

I have a MacBook and still use it.  It is a case of how you organize to use both machines.  I still print off lots of lovely recipes from my MacBook,  as I can't print from the iPad.   I also can't transfer photos to iPad so need MacBook.  Also there is no photo for Skype on iPad,  so still need MacBook for this.  There are several stands available, the man at the airport had one that was also a cover.  He was English, so may have bought the cover there.

I was wanting an iPad and have to justify it by being able to use it for work. What I really need is that 'smallness' and the appleair also looks like it might suit my needs. Want to be able to travel with it and use in the kitchen (mostly). Think the new iPad is coming out in  January and is going to have a camera and USB port thingy. I am really in the dark when it comes to computers and all that jargon they use, so I really don't know what would suit me best  ???

Thank you for the tips. It is amazing what you can use the iPad for.  I have downloaded the ever note app and another friend suggested to download chefs journal. So I am on a huge learning curve. Thought I would be able to use my USB port and all would be simple! Big mistake :)

Kezza if you set up ever note on your  pc you can cut and paste on the computer then sync it and the recipes should show up on ever note on your iPad if that makes sense ???

Meagan, thank you.  I am now able to cut and paste into ever note and have some recipes saved.  Now all I need is time off work to continue to play and cut and paste!

Check out the paprika app for the iPad. It is a recipe program which can cut and paste from most well known recipe websites.  It can get the recipes from here but sometimes needs a little tweaking.  It even has built in menu planning now.

I use the drop box app for my ipad. Basically it puts a desktop icon onto your computer where you just drop the files into the folder that you want to access from your ipad. You may have to download the equivalent word app, not sure what its called, but allows you to open microsoft word docs on your ipad. The excel equivalent is called numbers.

I find this is the best system, as you can also access pdf files through the drop box. So if you see something you like on taste, you can print a pdf, and save it onto your computer, then put a copy of it in the drop box.

each time you plug your ipad into your computer, it will sync the drop box.

Good luck.

I have a MacBook Pro and use MacGourmet daily for recipes and meal planning.  The meal planning feature allows you to send your plan to iCal where you can share it with anyone else on the network (my DH for example).  You can copy and paste recipes from anywhere and paste it into MacGourmet and with just a little tweaking they end up looking great.  There is a "chef view" which makes the recipe full screen and highlights the ingredient or step you're up to.  It also has an iPhone and iPad app and you synchronise between the MacBook and the iPhone which initially I found annoying, but now I realise it's the better way to do things.  I don't want to be typing or copying and pasting too much on an iPad/iPhone, much faster on a 'proper' keyboard.  I would only be using the iPad to view the recipe while I was making it anyway (which is pretty much what it's designed to do).

Oh, and it has a shopping list feature so that the ingredients from the recipes you've put into the meal planner get put into a shopping list (from which I just delete all the stuff I already have on hand).

When we move into our new house we will be getting an iPad (don't have one yet, just an iPhone) and it will be mounted in the kitchen on a flexible arm.  This way it can be kept at hand but up off the bench and out of the way of splatters (you should see my macbook...eeeek  :o )  I can't wait for that.

For some reason I never gelled with Evernote.  But I love SpringPad.  There is an extension for your browser bar on the computer and whenever there is a recipe you want, you just click the SpringIt tab and it generally recognises it's a recipe and adds the ingredients, etc.  If it doesn't, you can either bookmark it, or force it to recognise that it's a recipe and copy and paste.  In other respects, it's very similar to Evernote - just more user friendly and less work for recipes.  Also, there is a menu plan / shopping list function.

It's also possible to copy and paste java code to get it on your iPad browser bar too (don't ask me how I did it 'cos I can't remember.  I just googled SpringIt ipad browser extension, and found a place that told me how to do it.  I then dutifully followed the instructions, understanding none of it, and it worked  ;D  )

So perhaps a good idea is to download both Apps as they're free, and see which does it for you.

The other App I use is RecipeBook, which is excellent.  You can download recipes into it from online, although you can't choose the URLs yourself, they are fixed.  I generally use Recipezaar (aka Food.com), but there are lots of URLs to choose from.  Unfortunately this forum isn't one of them :-(  I did suggest it, but I guess one person asking wouldn't cut it.  Or maybe the platforms clash.  Anyway, the App itself is great, converts at the touch of a button, and even has a built in timer which I sometimes find useful.  Again, it has the Grocery List function.

The last App I use is HandyCookBook (which is an iPhone App that I use on my iPad).  This is great if you already have recipes, or know some kind person who does, on a desktop program.  These can then be exported as .mxp or .mmf files and downloaded into your App.  Also there is a website form where recipes can by typed quickly into your App, rather than trying to fiddle with the iPad 'keyboard'.
