bacon spice
« on: September 24, 2011, 11:43:27 pm »
Hi fellow Thermomixers, some time ago (probably 3 years now) George Columbaris on Ready Steady Cook made a spice mix up to simulate the taste of bacon.... I have searched high and low and even attempted to contact him. To no avail... did anyone see that segment (long shot I know), or has anyone in their experimentation's come across something that I could use to simulate the taste of bacon..............hope someone can steer me in the right direction.  Have a lovely day  :)

Hi Huon100

I don't know about spice mixes, would love to hear ideas.  I always use liquid smoke to get that smoky reminder of bacon.  I have seen this American fake bacon seasoning on the net which looks exciting.

Edit:  just looked at the original bacon salt nutritional information, it's not a health food  ;)

You can buy "bacon bits" in supermarkets (usually in or near the spice section).  The last bottle I bought I tasted one and threw them out.  I used to like these, but this lot tasted revolting - you may like them, though.  They are a vegetarian item, so it's OK to use them if you are vegetarian or vegan (I think they are vegan, but it may be wise to check the ingredients).  I think I would probably experiment with liquid smoke if you wanted that taste.  See how you go, anyway.

Hi

Did you try contacting Ready Steady Cook?  They might have the recipe?

Great find Kathryn - love the way people can find most things we are after. I also searched online for the recipe for Lellyj but like her, hit a brick wall.

I've made this in the past and it was really good.
