Name of Recipe: Orange Cake
Number of People: 6
Ingredients:
2 big oranges
2 eggs
200g cup grapeseed or other oil
270g plain flour
460g sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 extra orange, halved
1 tablespoon or so of sugar extra
icing sugar - around 1/4 cup or less
Preparation:
Heat oven to around 160-180'c *
Wash your oranges well, rinse.
Cut the ends off, cut into quarters. remove the white centre and any seeds, cut in half again so you have 8 pieces per orange. place in thermomix.
Add eggs and oil.
Blend on speed 8 for 25-30 seconds until it's mostly smooth, thick and creamy.
Add flour, sugar and baking powder
Mix on speed 4 for 10-15 seconds until mixed.
Pour into a cake tin (greased, lined, whatever you want ;))
Bake for about 30-40 minutes until a skewer comes out clean *
Let cool for 15-20 minutes
Meanwhile juice the extra orange and add the extra sugar to it.
Either in a saucepan on the stovetop or in the micrwave heat it until the sugar is dissolved
Add some sugar to the juice and bring to a boil, stir to make sure it's well dissolved.
Use the skewer to stab holes all over the top of the cake!
Pour the syrup mix over the cake
Sift the icing sugar over the top and serve.

em - I made this cake, the first recipe in this thread, and it is delicious very moist and beautiful, would recommend!
brazen - it's a lovely cake, though very moist and quite rich.

im trying to work out if this would work....there is heaps of sugar, not much flour and lots of oil..... weird...

it's a lovely cake, though very moist and quite rich.
is it the done thing here to link to the recipe source? i hope so, if i'm going to convert recipes for people to use it would be nice to get the credit ;)

Thermomixer... how sweet was the cake? I am thinking of trying this with a greatly reduced amount of sugar (as much as I am addicted to/love sugar I know I need to reduce the amount I have).
How much do you think the texture would be affected?

it is a LOT of sugar isn't it. I think i have made it once replacing half the sugar and fat with apple sauce and it was OK. can't quite remember 8)

I have a very similar old fashioned recipe but made with lemons. Given to me from a good friends grandmothers recipe ;D

Ingredients are really easy and its delicious.... with lemons.
LEMON DRIZZLE CAKE
Ingredients are
150g well softened butter
150g sugar
150g self raising flour
2 eggs
grated rind of one lemon
juice of the lemon and 100g granulated sugar.
Seem to remember eggs and sugar first with butterfly, then soft butter and finally flour. But if anyone would like to try and adapt if officially I would be truly grateful. Although I must admit this recipe works fantastically all thrown in a bowl and hand beated until all blended!! Its quite thick!
Oven 180º until golden brown, approx 20 mins.
Then take out of the oven, mix together lemon juice and sugar and quickly pour (drizzle) over the top! I normally make this recipe in fairy cake tins, so the kids can take one to school easily. This recipe makes 12 perfectly, 15 mins.

Cooky, so really the cake doesn't have any sugar in the sponge. All the sugar is put on the top, twice. Once when hot and then when cooled. I can't imagine a sponge with no sugar at all. Looks good though! Plus the 2 vanilla in the ingredients, is this vanilla sugar sachets or just vanilla essence or paste? l

No the sponge does have sugar!
Look:
First of all, you make a liquid by mixing margarine, with sugar, orange-juice, cognac and half an orange bark. Then you remove two glasses from this mixture, place one in the refridgerator, and the other in cool storage.
Add flour and the rest, like the recipe describes in the mixture left in your TM..
THerefore, the sponge and the liquid dressing contain sugar :P
As for the vanilla, they are vanilla sachets.. it looks like flour... white powder!
