Title: Presto Pressure Cookers
Post by: courton on February 07, 2012, 01:36:45 am
Hi, has anyone used Presto pressure cookers?  It is an American brand and my cousin from the USA raves about it and says it is a good brand for the price. At the moment, I can access it only on ebay.. still trying to find stockist but wanted the forum's opinion about it.

Sorry can't help. I'm a big chicken when it comes to pressure cookers. At least it's one thing I won't want in the kitchen. :)

I've owned several Presto pressure cookers.  They are a good, inexpensive work horse pressure cookers.  They are available in both cast aluminum and stainless steel.  The latter are more expensive.

Presto's site has good advice. (http://www.gopresto.com/recipes/ppc/howtobuy.php)

That being said, there are some new technologies in pressure cooking.  I have two Fagor Pressure cookers (http://www.fagorpressurecookers.com/catalog/pressure-cookers/)  a 6 quart and a 10 quart that for me are easier to use than the Presto.

I've also got a Cuisinart electric pressure cooker which I rate as "okay" but not superior to the stove top models.  (It was a gift!).

Thank you for your advice. I am buying it for my mum  who is 82. Which, in you opinion, is easier to use? She is technophobe... it has to be really simple, easy to use and preferably not too heavy.

The hip pressure cooking (http://feeds.feedburner.com/HipPressureCooking) blog is an excellent site for reviews of pressure cookers, advice about equipment to use in them and lots of yummy recipes - worth a look.

I've used them for years and never had problems - the new ones won't fizz and gush steam the way the old ones did  and are a really quick way to cook tougher cuts of meat to melting yumminess and cook beans fast (among other things). Great for big lots of stock too, or turning mysterious bits of freezer burned meat into pet food. ;D

Bonsai, thanks for posting the hip pressure cooking link. I recently bought a Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker and it's still in it's box unopened and in the cellar. The Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker got a good review, when I get back from vacation I'm going to start using it! It was one of those buys that was not totally planned, I had just been reading Hester Blumenthal's book (he is a big fan of pressure cookers for sauces), and Migros's were offering 50% off KR pressure cookers. I couldn't resist the bargain.

The Fagor and the Kuhn Rikon duromatic are much less  tricky to use than the Presto.   It is important to read and follow the directions exactly -  especially important is lowering the temp  and keeping it low after it has reached the venting stage.
If someone is forgetful, do not use a pressure cooker - if not tended correctly they can explode!

I rely on loud and long-ring timers or wear  one that hangs around my neck on a cord in case I get distracted by another task.

I'm considering buying a new pressure cooker. I have been using my mother's 1970"s vintage french pressure cooker, but the handle on the top has broken and it is getting increasingly harder to remove the lid once the food is cooked. I made a beef curry last night - I made the curry paste in the Thermo Chef and then cooked the curry in the pressure cooker. It was really tender, but it took me about 5 min of wiggling the lid before i could persuade it to open. It could be as simple as a new seal and handle, but I don't know if it's worth the hassle.
I have a voucher for the General Trader which I could use to buy the New Wave 5 in one multicooker, which has a pressure cooker as one of it's features. Has anyone tried this appliance?

Like some of you I was worried about using one and when I was given one on a visit to India was so worried that I would blow my self up it sat in the back of the cupboard.  A couple of years ago I saw a tefal one which had a timer you could put on and it didn't make the noises that had worried me before so I purchased one and have never looked back.  I have arthritis in my hands so find it hard to "screw" some of the lids into place but this one is a breeze to use and has a built in pressure gauge so cannot "blow" up.  Have a look at one and see what you think!!!!

JulieO,

The Heston T book that I have is called Heston Blumenthal at home. It was a xmas present from my daughter. After reading it, it makes you want to go out and buy a pressure cooker and a soda siphon. I used to own the latter, but seem to have misplaced it. I'm waiting for the day that Migros have a 50% sale on them!
I actually made his garden salad, http://m.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/dec/14/garden-salad-with-sauce-gribiche-recipe?cat=lifeandstyle&type=article, for a special family dinner. Used my TM for making the soil and the mayoniase.

Thank you Chdv for that link, will have a look.  :D

Wonder, I love my pc.  I bought it last year and have used it numerous times, you get such good flavour from anything you cook in it.  Before getting it I was advised to get an 8 litre one so whole chickens can be put in there, which I'm glad I did as they cook in 20-25 mins and come out so tender.
Even though 8 litres seems a lot, you've got to realise that you can only fill them between 1/2 - 2/3 full as it needs space to build up the pressure.
I took my time reading up reviews before finally choosing mine and I've been very happy with it with no problems.

There are some good recipe books out there too, the 3 I have are; Women's Weekly Pressure Cooking book,  The Pressure Cooker by Suzanne Gibbs, and a favourite Pressure Cooker by Rachael Lane.

As for slow cookers, I'm not a fan.  It was great when I worked and had a young family, and just getting a meal on the table outweighed anything else, but seeing that need no longer exists I'm happy not to use it.  :)

I have been using a pc for years. My mum taught me how to use one, as she had used one for as long as I can remember. I use it so much, makes the best soup, pot roast, stew, curry, corned beef, etc, and most things wouldn't take more than 20 min. I also have a sc which I really don't use that much as I prefer the taste that you get from the pressure cooker, and 20 min isn't long when you get home from work to make a stew, etc. I currently have a Tefal one, which I don't have a problem with and is easier to use than the older one I had, which i can't remember the name of, but used to have a little weight that would wobble on top of a little tube that came out the the lid, when it came under pressure and you used to have to judge the pressure in the pot by the fastness/slowness of the wobble. (which on one occasion when I didn't turn things down correctly saw pea soup shooting out the top of the tube all over the kitchen ceiling), so I can understand some people being wary of them,   But with the tefal you dial a number on the lid, decrease the temp on the stove, and set the timer. Love my pc about as much as I love my TMX :o

Court on, I'm also a 5 in 1 convert. To pressure cook you add all the ingredients, lock the lid in place and ensure the lever on the lid is set to airtight, pressure the pressure cook button, set the time in minutes and then press start and that's it. The cooker will automatically turn to pressure cook when it has come to pressure, once the time is completed it will change to the keep warm function. You can either release the pressure quickly by releasing the valve on the lid or just wait 10 mins for it to reduce automatically. Very easy.

Halex I was like you, so scared. So I went into Robins Kitchens and the lovely sales assistant showed me how it works. She got the recipe book/manual out and went through it with me. That night I used it for the first time and was worried that my dinner wouldn't be cooked and would still be raw. It was just so easy to use. I got the Cuisinart 6lt one. It can brown and sauté as well as pressure cook. I still have my slow cooker for the times I am home all day.

Like you I have always been scared of pc, and would never think of getting one, until I was at a friends house and she had one, it is so simple to use and does all thinking for you, and best of all not scary lol.

Courton I got my 5 in 1 from home deport for $128 plus $2 insurance free delivery , it took about 6 days from ordering to having it in WA.

I can't speak of the electric ones, but everyone who has one on here are very happy with them.

I didn't have any experience with any pc's before I got mine and so was never afraid of them.

The only other thing I can say is, you know how happy we are with our TM's and how we wish we could have had one years ago?  That's how I feel with the pc. At first you think that the food couldn't possibly be cooked in such a short time and then are amazed when you find it is,  and it tastes really good.  I think that was the biggest surprise for me, that the food tasted so good.  For some reason I thought it might have been inferior to cooking the normal way.

It wouldn't take long before you are converting recipes yourself, though you will make mistakes at first.  The other day I converted a Nigella recipe for overnight lamb shanks with figs and honey and reduced both the red wine and water content because it wasn't having a long, slow cook in the oven. I think because there was spiced pureed pumpkin also added to the cooking sauce it thickened up more than I was expecting and I needed to add more water at the end to loosen it up more. I've noted that for next time as it tasted wonderful in only 35 mins of cooking instead of the hours normally.

Of course I'm sure there will be instances where you won't like a certain recipe just like you do with any other cooking method, that's just personal likes and dislikes, but I'm sure once you start cooking this way you will see just how good it is and like me wished you'd had one years ago. :)

I think what is attractive for me is the one button operation. With our fagor pc you have lock into position, wait until button goes down, have high heat, reduce temp when button pops up and steam comes out of nozzle then put timer on for meat or lentils. Please reassure me it is going to be easier than this for my 82 yr old mum.

With my Fagor Duo you lock lid in place, turn to high or low pressure and place over heat.  A little yellow button pops up when pressure is reached, you will then start to get some hissing coming out.  You turn down heat until it is only a little trickle coming out and then start timing from there.  I certainly don't find it a chore but for your mum maybe an elec one is the best option as this is all done automatically.  Like Maddy says, you set it and forget it.

The only reason I didn't get an elec one is I wanted to get one once.  I'd read that many elec ones wear out after a few years and need to be replaced or go through the hassle of trying to get it fixed.  With the stove top ones there's no electrics to worry about and if you get a good brand new lids are available.

Fishpond have been advertising the Suzanne Gibbs book for $24.25 with free shipping.
(book depository probably have it as well cheaper than $39.95).

I have it - it's a good book, as is the WW book.

H, I bought the 5 in 1 and sold one slow cooker on ebay and gave the other away but i was wanting to cut down on appliances in my cupboards. With the WW cookbook was it the bigger one or the standard size one? I've been trying to get the bigger one and haven't been able to. Where did you get the books from?
Title: Re: Presto Pressure Cookers
Post by: Halex on July 10, 2012, 12:59:06 am
The larger one, just under $40 from fishpond.com.au

I prefer to have separate appliances, just another one of my quirks. Plus I love my new slow cooker.

Looks like the home theatre room behind the lazy boys might be a god place ;D its ext to the kitchen.

Hally I have a normal 3 bedroom house and was running out of storage room so I bought one of those plastic wicker type trunks which people store their outdoor furniture cushions in.  In there I have all my glass jars and excess plasticware or anything I don't use very often - it freed up so much space in my cupboards. It just sits under the pergola, a few steps from the kitchen so much easier to access than keeping excess items in the garage.  Here's (http://www.nextag.com/outdoor-cushion-storage/compare-html) what they look like, any hardware store have them and mine was only $99 on special.

Hally I've just seen this quote on another forum.  Have you pm'd MJ to ask her if she's had any problems?  Just a thought.

"One thing to be aware of with the electric models is that their high pressure isn't as high as stove top models - I know this is the case with the Cuisinart - and finding what the actual pressure settings on them is can be quite tricky. Lower pressure means longer cooking times, so you might have to adjust recipes slightly. "

JulieO, I have ordered it, will just have to play around with it. Yes Ishould have pm MJ, didnt think.

It had to be electric or nothing, so hoping it will be OK.

Another gadget to learn ;D

Thanks for the info :)

Yep, I saw the softcover one after I had forked out for the hardcover one although I do prefer hardcover cookbooks especially in the kitchen- the softcover ones seem to cop more of a battering from me when I'm cooking.

Thanks for the link i'll have another look at trying to buy the larger of the WW books. I'm not sure if the shops in my area of Melbourne (Heidelberg) don't stock them or they keep running out but I've been unable to get either of WW ones around here. I've never purchased off fishpond and it has some bad reviews so I'm a bit nervous, I would much prefer book depository but they don't seem to have it in stock either - maybe there is a new one coming out??
Title: Re: Presto Pressure Cookers
Post by: Merlin on July 11, 2012, 01:24:58 am
Wonder- I only used Fishpond once and they stuffed up the order badly- in other words I won't use them ever again. Also, I cant stand the fact that if there is a problem there is no direct contact number, it all gets done via emails ie cr*p service if you ask me!! If I buy books online I now only use The book depository- always get the order right, arrives promptly and funnily, most of my pressure cooker books have come from their website. Also, being in Heidelberg you probably would find the books at any Kmart or Target store. I don't know if you go to Westfield Doncaster but there would definitely be some stores that sell the WW pressure cooker books there.

Merlin, that's what I had heard about fishpond so wasn't going to give them a try. I've tried both Doncaster and Northland, target, myer, Big W, K-mart, the remaining bookstores, Woolworths, Coles and even the newsagency!! Must just be bad timing, I haven't tried since I bought the PC about 8 weeks ago so maybe they have got them back in stock but I haven't had any time to look at the shops recently, I even tried the library and they don't have it. Will try again online.

I've bought quite a few books from Fishpond and never had a problem.

I've also bought from Book Depository numerous times.  One book I ordered and paid for never arrived, it was sorted out quickly and easily by email and I received a prompt refund  :)

I'd be happy to buy from Fishpond again based on my experiences so far.

I wouldn't recommend booktopia and have heard that often fishpond can't deliver on their book prices but are good for a refund.

That pulled pork recipe looks great. I have diced pork in my freezer. Would the recipe still work?
I've bought quite a few books from fishpond over the last twelve months or so without any problems.
I can recommend Miss Vickie's,s big book of PC recipes by Vickie's Smith. It has a big sections at the front with suggested cooking times for various meats, pulses, beans veges etc. it has lots of recipes ( but no pictures) lots of the recipes are American, and there is even a pulled pork recipe in it.

Katiej, I'm with your husband, I know it's tragic but every time I'm in the States for work I seek out restaurants that have pulled pork  :)

DG, that paprika chicken looks great, I might keep it in mind for next week.

We had the bolgnese risotto last night and it was fantastic, can't wait for left overs for lunch today. I'm not a huge risotto fan and DD refused to even try it but DH, DS and myself all had seconds.

Well I did Beef and Chorizo Stew (Pressure Cooker Recipe) & not quite nigella pc risotto boolognaise  from Wonders link.

The first dish, tender & flavoursome.
Dish 2 not y cup of tea, but I think ds will love t. I found it very soupy, too much liquid for me.

Dsh 1 would make again, dish for ds if he requsted it.

Both for dinner tonight.

sorry H I forgot I ladled out a bolw full of the liquid but I thought I had mis counted the cups of stock because I got sidetracked. I took out a couple of cups of the liquid and then cooked for about 5 more minutes without the lid on to reduce a little further.

Wonder, that makes sense, I added the 6 cups, plus the wine, plus the milk, & thought at the time its a lot of liquid.

I think ds will love this. Not really my cuppa tea, its in the thermomserver in the hope it will thicken.

This would  be a great school  lunch meal for him if he likes it.
