Chit Chat / Cooking books to give away
« on: January 13, 2013, 07:45:16 am »
I have had a clean out of all my cooking books (and I still have quite a few!)  There are about 50 or so, mostly WWW books plus others. Free to anyone who can pick them from me, north of  Perth. One condition... must take the lot! Just email me

Questions? Technical Issues? The Survival Guide / Re: Fresh garlic uses?
« on: December 30, 2012, 02:34:59 am »
I have just bought 500g of just picked garlic and the grower said she puts most of hers in the freezer. Have others done that?  I will have to look up on how to 'shell' the cloves in TM.

Thank you for this recipe. Made it last night, it was really delicious.  Will do the cabbage this way from now on. Might add curry paste next time for variety

I have a 11yr old grandson who is autistic. He was diagnosed when he was two.  My daughter has tried everything to help him ... reflexology, homeopathy,  diets, (he refused to eat what she had made and starved himself for several days until she gave in)  you name it she has tried it.  His behavior is now getting out of hand,  breaking doors , 6 windows, terrible melt downs and it is affecting the whole family terribly. Granddaughter may be coming to stay for most weekends just to get out of the house.
DD is now thinking seriously of getting him medicated which she has been so opposed to because of the possible side affects.. obesity, tics and more.  We are now wondering if he also could be bipolar as he is getting more highs and deep lows.

Has anyone got knowledge of the different medication used for autistic children and side affects. Unfortunately it takes several months to get an appointment with a pediatrician and I truly believe they cannot wait that long before the family splits up

Chit Chat / Mosquitoes
« on: December 03, 2012, 07:49:22 am »
Thank you for all those suggestions.  I too have had Ross River Virus, thankfully a mild dose.  One of the replies triggered a memory of something I had read in the Bali Advertiser last year
For those interested
http://baliadvertiser.biz/articles/paradise/2012/mosquitos.html

I now remember trying to find the Lemon eucalyptus oil without any luck.
The most effective natural mosquito repellent so far. A 2002 study in the New England Journal of Medicine compared different synthetic chemical and herbal repellents. A Lemon Eucalyptus Repellent provided 120.1 minutes of mosquito protection, more than a repellent with a low concentration of the chemical DEET (4.75% DEET provided 88.4 minutes of protection and 23.8% DEET, provided 301.5 minutes of protection

I will try again.  I had bought one of those electronic things which emit a high frequency and you attach it your clothing.  The beggers came and sat on it!

Chit Chat / Mosquitoes

I have just come back a few days camping.  The Mosquitoes were there in swarms and they love me!  Infact anything that bites love me. Once, we had just arrived a new camping site, I opened the car door and a huge horse fly flew in and bit me!  I use 'Off"  which does work to some degree and Bushmans which is very good, though it melts plastic if you have any on your hands and touch something.  I have been taking VitB for months, but that doesn't help and burn coils but I think the little beggers love the smell of them!
So... does anyone have a tried and true insect repellant  and also something to keep them away.  Even when I spray myself with Off etc, they hang around just a few few inches away looking for an unsprayed bit of skin. They even sit on the rim of my coffee cup while I am having a coffee

Chit Chat / Re: Hello from Queenstown.

My daughter used to work in the restaurant at the top of the gondola and would go up there everyday!  Whenever I would visit, I would have to sit facing the mountain so I couldn't see the view.  When it got too windy they would have to put sand bags in the gondolas to weigh them down!

Chit Chat / Frozen lemons
« on: November 06, 2012, 04:57:52 am »
I was sent this a few days ago by email... has anyone tried this?

Many professionals in restaurants and eateries are using or consuming the entire lemon and nothing is wasted.
How can you use the whole lemon without waste?

Simple.. place the washed lemon in the freezer section of your refrigerator. Once the lemon is frozen, get your grater, and shred the whole lemon (no need to peel it) and sprinkle it on top of your foods.

Sprinkle it to your vegetable salad, ice cream, soup, cereals, noodles, spaghetti sauce, rice, sushi, fish dishes, whisky, wine.... the list is endless.

Chit Chat / Re: Preserved lemons
« on: September 17, 2012, 02:47:41 am »
Thank you to all those who replied to this. Lots of good ideas I have now made two jars, made sure that I had jars with shoulders to keep the lemons under the juice. I cut the lemons into quarters so I could fit more in.   I have them sitting on the bench and check them every few days to make sure that they are submerged.

From the left over lemon skins that were juiced, I have used them to make the new cleaning solutions

I feel very productive!  Thanks everyone

Chit Chat / Preserved lemons
« on: September 11, 2012, 05:22:37 am »
Last year I did 3 jars of preserved lemons, but they all went moldy on top.  I have since read that the lemons should be kept completely covered by the lemon juice, but mine kept floating
So any suggestions for keeping the lemons under the juice??
thanks

Chit Chat / Re: Are there any backyard veggie gardeners here?
« on: September 11, 2012, 12:57:51 am »
I am feeling quite proud of myself .. I emptied the bottom of my compost container, through the doors on the sides and was able to fill up to 2 largish containers!  However the mix had a lot of slaters/woodlice so I googled and found that they were a good sign that all was well with the mixture.

Planted 6 patio tomatoes, and picked spinach (which we have in every meal) , coriander and parsley for tea.

Today have to trim the rosemary bush which has grown about 15cm the last few days.  Need to mulch in the next week before it gets tooo hot here in Perth

Chit Chat / Re: Bacon & Egg Pies in the pie maker

This gets me inspire to experiment more with my piemakers.  I usually do left overs.
For these bacon and pies .. do you put pastry on the bottom?
