This recipe came of Better Homes and Gardens tonight for relieving cold symptoms. Haven't actually tried it in the TMX yet, but this is how I think I'd do it. If you make it would love your feedback/hints/tips/suggestions:
Combine the following ingredients into TM bowl:
500 mls boiling water,
1 lemon sliced,
12 slices fresh ginger,
4 tablespoons honey, 5 cardomon pods
Set Timer for 20 minutes and cook at 100C on Reverse ^^.
(Their version was simmering on the stove for 20 mins)
Strain using baset, and pour into cup. Sip rugged up on the couch with a cosy blanket.
Get well soon! ;) :)
-
Just a me recipe! Thanks I-L-B.....just need to wait till I am sick now! Maybe JD can try it out, are you feeling better now JD?
Its just at the moment, its too hot for me to trty this one out, although maybe worth making and then chilling to drink on the beach?
-
I'd add some whisky at the end.... ;D
-
Och aye - a hot toddy - I ken.
-
I think I'll add the whisky to tonight's brew to balance out the honey taste. It seemed to loosen the conjestion on my chest and I coughed for ages until I thought of another remedy I had read about and that was to rub the soles of your feet with Vicks - it worked (not immediately) and I then slept cosily until around 7am. Think I will spend the day in bed with the paper and my computer today - plenty of leftovers in the fridge. It is such a waste of time being sick :( :( :(
-
Ooh this looks like just what I need :( Thanks for posting!
-
a week too late for me!
-
wonder if it will work on the kids.....with the whisky!!! maybe they will sleep longer and then me and the OH can recover from our colds!!
-
Well hope everyone who is sick is feeling better and no one else will need this.
JD made this one first and we adapted to the TMX ;)
Let me know how the whisky goes! :D :D
-
I am drinking the remainder of last night's brew as we speak but this time with a few glugs of whisky in it. Pretty potent stuff which is bound to kill something - either me or the bug I've got. :P :P :P Gets better with each sip though and certainly loosens things up. Will do the feet thing again before settling down for the night as that Vicks trick certainly stopped the coughing. I love old remedies that actually work.
-
The vicks on the feet trick is great. I do it to Grace anytime she has a cold and it just helps her (and me!!) have a good nights sleep.
-
with a few glugs of whisky in it. Pretty potent stuff
I think one glug is acceptable - a few and we may need to notify authorities ;) ;) ;) ;D
-
Slowly getting over the flu but needed some more ingredients for another batch of this drink. Mum did the shopping for me and DH went around to her place on his gopher to bring the items home. Made in in the TMX ILB and it worked perfectly, put 1T honey less in it this time as that was a bit overpowering in the first lot - will add a little whiskey to tonights cup to ensure I sleep well again. Had to cancel babysitting arrangements for tomorrow with DD for the first time in 4 years - don't want new baby to catch it and 1 more day taking it reasonably easy will just about do me I would think.
-
Hope that and a good nights sleep fixes that for you JD! And I'm sure DD would prefer you to cancel rather thank passing the cold onto kids and baby. Put your feet up while you can ;)
-
My turn to try this one... :(
Dont have an whiskey though.... ;)
-
Hope you aren't feeling too sick ILB - brandy works too :-)) :-)) :-)) Put your feet up (if you can) relax and stay warm.
-
oh no ILB :( hope you are both feeling better soon
-
Thanks very much both of you! :-* :-* :-*
Grace seems to be better today but I'm feeling lousy with my head, shoulders and glands all aching and generally feeling pretty lousy.
Anyway have just done a grocery shop and stopped by the bottle shop for some whiskey (thanks for the tip re brandy JD, however apart from wine I don't have much else - lol).
So I'll get stuck into that tonight, along with the garlic tablets and anything else I can find!
-
Sorry to hear about your lurgie - how about some of that Pedro Ximinez - slightly higher alcohol content and will sooth the thraot too !!
-
;D Could do that too Thermomixer :D
-
How are you feeling today ILB? Lucky it is a public holiday to give you an extra day to rest. :-* :-*
-
OMG how good is this!! The dreaded lurgie has hit the house. Miss 2 earaches with it (no sleep for me) Mr 4 has chest infection, Mr 15 down with the lurgie and on top of that I have it too....now I have this...ahhh so good. I have it in my thermo mug just following me around the house and topping it up as I go - feel like I can actually function somewhat since I started sipping on it. Huge round of applause for this conversion :)
-
Sounds like you are going to have to buy a bucketload of ginger Kathryn - hope you all start feeling better soon.

Hi JD.
Sorry - had completley miss your post. ???
We managed to avoid the cold/flu last time. We both had a day or two feeling pretty average and then bouced right back. But think that it'll be back out tomorrow!! DD has now come down with it (she was supposed to be at daycare today and her Dad pick her up for a couple of days - but this afternoon shes been to unwell to go anywhere today.) How do you think getting a 3YO to drink this will go?? ??? ???
-
Don't like your chances ILB :-\ :-\ Hope Grace gets better quickly.
-
Don't like your chances ILB :-\ :-\ Hope Grace gets better quickly.
LOL - I think I've got Buckley's and None!!
Mind you have no trouble getting medicine down if she really needs it and she'll eat brussell sprouts (actually she eats mine for me too - lol).

Sorry to hear about everyone being sick faffa! Hope they're all on the mend really soon!

Well if they aren't I will be ;) ;) ;) ;) - I'm just loving this drink. Actually gives me quite a pick up. Nothing a few days of rest in the warm won't fix for the others along with plenty of Vit C. Just read somewhere that fresh pineapple is better for Vit C intake than oranges as it contains bromine which is really good for breaking up mucus and congestion. They all eat fresh pineapple better than oranges. I have one pineapple here and will be off to the market tomorrow morning for more.
-
Who cares if you're sick or not this is so yummy!!!!
I do have a sore throat / congestion though in my defence but omg if I'd known how good this tasted I think I would've made it earlier!!!!
See how it goes with soothing and clearing up congestion.
-
:D :D :D :D :D Glad you found the recipe Snoozie.
-
I've started to come down with a cold and this is all I've been craving all day at work. If it wasn't for those budgets I would have made the 50km round trip home at lunch time to make it. So now I'm finally home I'm going to make a batch before heading to bed. ;)
-
Hope it does the trick for you ILB, don't forget the glug of whisky or brandy ;) :-* :-* Get well soon.
-
Thanks JD :-*
Yes sipping at it now, in my pjs and have the whisky in it ;) ;D
Actually just cooked it for 15 mins tonight and that was plenty. I have to dilute it with about 50% hot water as it's so strong. Which is easy to take to work as I just fill half the cup with boiling water, add the cold LGH Drink and it's perfect for drinking.
-
Hope you're feeling better soon. Think I might be getting something now !!!

Hope you feel better soon ILB

This sounds great. Hope you are feeling better. We still think that the parsley lemon juice hits the lurges head on in our house. My son came down with a cold/flu this week and I dosed him up on it for 3 days and now he's better. Everyone else had it too just to give us an immunity boost. I also add fresh ginger to the juice and plenty of raw organic honey (retains it's anit bacterial goodies when not heat treated). This juice is nicest when drunk straight away and I have found that it has a better consistency when I firstly chop/grin the parsley and ginger on sp7 for a few secs and then add juice of one lemon and half a tray of ice blocks sp10 for 20secs then add water (6000ml) on top of lid - still on sp 10 and continue to juice for 1 1/2 - 2 mins. You can add more water at the end if you want.
-
then add water (6000ml) on top of lid - still on sp 10 and continue to juice for 1 1/2 - 2 mins. You can add more water at the end if you want.
Do you mean 600mls earth mumma ??? ???
-
Thanks, but no not better yet :-)) have found myself fighting off so many colds in the last 6 months that thankfully haven't managed to take. So this time I thought I might take on Cyndi's advice that having a cold, runny nose etc is one of the body's way of de-toxing.... not convinced but thought I won't attack it with everything the medicine cupboard or the naturopaths secret weapons has to offer this time. Hoping that in the long run I won't keep fighting off these colds... Time will tell.
Hope you're feeling better soon. Think I might be getting something now !!!
Hope you're feeling better too Thermomixer.
Earth Mumma, hope your family are all perky again soon too.
-
sorry Jd - yes 600mls. 6 litres would be a lot of juic to get thru :D :D :D
-
Yum. I did not have all the "right" ingredients but it inspired me to give it a go. I put the juice of one (very juicy) lemon, and one small sliced lemon, as well as a small (not very sweet) orange sliced, some dried ground ginger (did not have fresh - prob about a teaspoon or so), a touch of ground cinnamon (maybe 1/4 tsp), and some honey (not sure how much, used a "soup spoon" about 3 without waiting for it to all come off eachtime - so maybe 2-3 tablespoons), filled it to the 1lt line (so maybe 600-700 mls water), on reverse 100degrees for 20 mins. and strained
The house smells wonderful - I think it would have been ready to drink after 10 mins, but so much nicer after the full 20.
Ok, off to enjoy my drink in bed and get some rest.
Thanks for the recipe idea.
-
Sorry to hear you are not well Jules. This drink is great though. my DS2 now asks for it if he feels like he's getting a cold
-
Get well Jules :-* :-*
-
Thanks for the well wishes. Lots of sleep and the hot drink seem to be slowly working. Definately a nice drink but think "real" ginger would make it a winner.
Might see if my eldest wants to try it sometime (he's 4). I've not offered hot lemon drinks before as I know how much I used to hate them (mind you made that way I still do :P - touch of honey, heaps of lemon and some boiling water)
-
Yes, real ginger is the way to go but we don't always have it on hand when we need it. Hope you feel better soon Jules.
I tried another remedy last time I was ill - it is from 'that site' where all the controversy is at the moment but this one is credited to someone. I find it cheaper to make than the BHG one and because I had Indian spices on hand for the new cookbook, was able to make it immediately I read this one. See it here http://www.stephberg.com/?p=2048 (http://www.stephberg.com/?p=2048). DH didn't like it but then he doesn't like anything like this whereas I can feel it doing me good the minute I start sipping it.
-
Actually I think I preferred the batch with the ground ginger in it. Its nice with both, fresh and dried ginger. And a touch of ground cinnamon.
-
Bumping because I'll be making some tomorrow when I grab some fresh ginger and lemon from shops!
No glugs here unfortunately (33 weeks pregnant!). Hehe
-
It's that time of the year so a good bump Snoozie. Hope you feel better soon.
-
Yes good time for it! Hehe would be better if supermarket ppl didnt look at you like you had 2 heads because you ask if the lemons are waxed lol
Boiling it now hoping that might help remove some of it lol not sure if that's the way to go about it but it'll do!
-
Don't have that problem with a ready supply hanging over over fence from the neighbour's place. Aren't you supposed to scrub bought lemons with a brush & warm water to remove the wax?
-
Jealous of your homegrown! I think so. This batch has a bit of a bitter aftertaste. Not sure if it's cos the lemon is overboiled or too much ginger or not enough honey lol still drinking it and can feel my nose/congestion clearing up. Miss 2yr old had a small cup (ikea kid size "mug") which I put half in then filled with cool water. She drank it all down! Lol
Tastes sweet when first drinking but bitter afterwards. Any thoughts on that? Lol I'm leaning towards too much ginger buT doesn't really taste like ginger iykwim? I can taste the ginger "burn" in it. This is what I liken old lemons too lol but I only bought it this morning!
Still <3 it!
-
I haven't made it since last winter Snoozie so I can't even remember what it does taste like. Maybe the 'few glugs' kills the after taste :-)) :-)) In your condition, perhaps you can just dilute it a bit like you did for your DD and maybe add a little more honey. Sounds like it is doing it's job in clearing the congestion though.
-
Snoozie, did your lemons have a thick pith on them (the white part under the skin)? As that is very bitter. I make this all the time when I am under the weather and carry it around with me in a travel mug. Haven't noticed the after taste before - that was what made me wonder about the pith.
-
ooo hadnt noticed this one before and now will just need to remember it once winter comes around next! Reminds me of an organic syrup my mum used to buy that had these ingredients and it was yum and always worked!
-
Will have a look at the pith next time. Might give it a peel on the inside next time and see how that goes.
Definitely helped loosen everything up but I woke up early hours of morning all settled in my ears argh was horrid. Itchy, blocked ears. I don't do sick well! Especially with both kids with similar issues too so they are little cling ons. Lol more so because DH went away on business overnight.
Going to make up another batch this afternoon. Have to make some muffins and scrolls for DD to take to school. She's home today hoping the rest will help as she's been stroppy in afternoons so thinking she's tiring out. Hard to try and be understanding when you're not feeling well either!!!
-

I AGREE and sometimes you just have to have that rest yourself (from the school run and routine etc) to help not only them but yourself. I often find that 1 day off will avoid a whole week off.
Get well soon - all of you :) :-* :-*

Did anyone see this recipe for a cough syrup in the Body & Soul liftout of our Sunday paper last month?
Chop a red onion, place it in a bowl and cover with honey.
Place in a warm room for 6-8 hours. Strain the onion from the syrup.
Adult dose - 1 tblspn every 2 hours
Children's dose - 1 tspn every 2-4 hours
Wonder if it works.

I'm sure my Mum use to make this for us when we were kids and had a cough. Can't remember if it helped :D :D
-
Just what I was looking for. I'm full of cold and trying to get better for my Veroma Demo this weekend. I like the idea of a wee dram added to it. Hope my hubby doesn't notice the contents of his special bottle diminishing lol! ;)
-
JD as kindl bumped this to me, so anyone else who has a cold sounds like a good hot drink.
Don't think DS will go the cardamom pods. :-\
Hally
-
Dh making this for me. Bless he doesnt have a clue about the tm. Told him to set it for 20 mins, he came back and told me the dial only went up to 10mins.
I rush out of bed and said thsnks for chopping i will put the tm on. Dont want a broken tm on top of feeling terrible. Then he got intersted in hiw to use it, have asked him many times if he wanted to learn, one day he says, but today is not the day. Aaaggghh
Hally
-
Oh poor Hally, you are not feeling well but sorry, I did get a laugh out of this posting. I can understand how you just want the drink and not have to give a cooking lesson right at this time. Get well soon. :-* :-* Poor DH is obviously only trying to help.
-
Just made it through a cold myself. I was away working at the time and therefore couldn't make this. Returned home and carried on as usual (as us mum's tend to do). DH now has it and of course he's moping around telling me how sick he is and that I really don't undertstand how he feels? Honestly is there anything worse than a sick husband? ???
-
Jd - dh has been an angel looking after me. Hate being sick such a waste of time. Having cam at a sleepover has been quit good, he normally wakes me evdy 20mins to check onme, bless his heart :( he means well.
Twitterpad, i steamed on and on until saturday when i was so weak i could hardly walk, so rested up yesterday and feel a bit better today. So will stay in bed or on sofa today and hopefully feel good tomorrow, but i will be sensible and wont be at the gym until maybe thursday.
Get better twitterpad
Hally
-
Guess it is that time of year which is why this drink always gets bumped around now. Resting up is the way to go but so hard for a woman.
Twitterpated - mmm, man flu - heard stories about that ;D ;D
-
OMG twitterpated - he can die from that you know :D :D
Hally smart girl, rest up today and hope you feel heaps better for it :-* :-*
-
OMG twitterpated - he can die from that you know :D :D
I think that's what he thinks.
Get better soon Hally.
-
Funny how they are all alike!
-
Cold and flu season has arrived early in Sydney this year so I am making my first batch of this for DH. Together with a bit of rest, it really seems to help.
-
Bumping this, Colds are starting again for us.
-
sounds nice, but i think i dont like cardamom pods :-)) what does it taste like ?
-
I don't like the taste of cardomom either Uni but I use them in this and I can drink it quite easily. It is a taste you have to get used to but I've never heard anyone say they can't sip it.
-
This is one that was given to me years ago by a friend and we've used this remedy ever since . .
1 cup water
Juice of 1 lemon
1 Tablespoon honey
1 capful whisky (read that as a generously good slurp!)
Combine all ingredients, heat gently until it's just about to boil.
Drink (sip it!) as hot as possible . .
Great taken just before bed . . very soothing . . ;D
-
I am making this this as we speak to nip a nasty virus in the bud. It smells amazing!! I have high expectations of waking up feeling 100% tomorrow!
-
Bumping for those who need it!
-
You beat me to it GF :) I have nasty cold/flu (dunno which) ATM and just about to make this again.
-
Guess it's that time of the year again. Hope you have all had your flu shots.

Djinni- really hope you're feeling better! :)
Thanks GF. And I thought the flu season arrived early last year...
-
Get well soon d373. It seems to be really early this year.
-
Thanks GF I feel like death warmed and haven't had a good night's sleep in days so I'm going to go and do my best to make this with whatever I have downstairs.
Thanks :)
-
Take care of yourself Jadey. It's no fun not being able to sleep.
-
Best wishes to all the sick members, they seem to be growing in numbers. :-* :-*
-
Bumping for Cookie!! :). Get well soon!!
-
Gosh! We have ALL sorts of recipes in the forum! 😄👍
-
Thanks GF and BZB. My throat is feeling a little better today.
-
Can't believe I am making this already, it's only March ???
Both DD20 and DS18 have a nasty flu bug and this is a favourite home remedy in our house.
-
I hope they recover quickly Djinni.
-
I haven't been sick for years but hopefully a mug of this later will help me sleep better tonight - the dash of whisky I intend adding should do the trick.
This time I noticed my TM jug seemed very shiny after making this, an added bonus.
-
I have a batch simmering away while I type. I rarely catch anything but am afraid that this time I must not have ducked in time. Was flicking through unread posts and found this one. Hopefully a nice dose of this with the added benefit of some medicinal whisky and I will be fine in the morning.
-
Get well soon Judy and Deniser. I hope the soothing drink made you feel better :-* :-*
-
I didn't have a bad night Denise, in bed at 6.30 with electric blanket on and shivering like mad. Drank this at 8pm, it certainly stopped the shivering and eased the sore throat a little which enabled me to rest comfortably. Having my second cup for breakfast with some toast.
-
Thank you CC - yes - I too had a reasonable night - only slept for about 4 hours and then up again for another cup. Certainly did seem to help the throat. Hope you are on the mend today Judydawn.
-
I'll be spending the weekend in bed Deniser which will hopefully help me get better more quickly. My neighbour is having a tree cut down this morning, the noise is horrendous. I could do without that.
-
Take care of yourselves and get well soon Judy and Deniser.
-
Take care Judy and Deniser.Keep up with the fluids and rest :-* :-*
-
Take care all those feeling poorly xx
-
What is this with this cough, first hubby suffered for 3 weeks and now its my turn :( Hating it as I am unable to even go to work, ppl will give me wierd looks if I keep coughing at work... will give this recipe a go, did anyone have any luck with it?
-
I hope I don't have that to look forward to thermilover. I find this stops the tickle in the throat, eases the soreness if you've been coughing for a long time and loosens congestion on the chest. I have it for breakfast instead of coffee as I can't look at tea and coffee when I've got the flu. I make a double batch at a time, keep it in the fridge then just reheat when needed. Morning and last thing a night essential (with a glug of whisky) but it can be sipped throughout the day too. It's fairly strong so it can be diluted to taste. It won't get rid of the flu but it will certainly make you feel more comfortable.
I've also tried the lemon/honey recipe within this thread when I've run out of fresh ginger. A pretty good substitute and a lot cheaper to make.
Get well soon.
-
Get well soon Judy.
Did you have the flu vaccine this year?
Apparently there are double the number of registered flu cases in Adelaide as this time last year.
-
Yes I did Boot, it appears that I'm just one of the statistics. Perhaps the Govt delay in providing the vaccine this year is the reason why there are so many cases.
-
The flu vaccine was held back this year so that they could incorporate the 4th flu type in with it. ( going on the northern hemisphere ). Those who had the vaccination early only received 3 flu types. We've waited for ours until we get home. Hopefully we will be safe.
Get well Judy. The flu is a nasty thing.
-
Yes I think the delay in vaccine didn't help.
The 4 Flu vaccine was too difficult to get and so expensive here we went with the 3 Flu one as that is still excellent coverage.
Sorry you were one of those statistics Judy.
I hate the nasal swab needed to diagnose Flu!
Get well soon.
-
Time to bump this one I think. I’ve made 2 batches and have been having a mugful just before going to sleep - with the addition of a glug of whisky to help me sleep.
-

I had a giggle at the added extra of the whiskey Judy LOL.
-
Good on you Judy. I hope you and Margaret recover quickly.
-
Just bumping this as I have already made a few batches in the last few days fo DD .
-
Thanks K Atie. Apparently the flu is a nasty one this year. We get our needles next week. At DD's hospital 4 people had an anaphylactic reaction to it. Also at another hospital here there were 5 reactions the same. It has been kept very quiet.
-
Yes I bet it has cookie.
