Title: Recipe review challenge....
Post by: Caroline J on August 18, 2011, 01:07:08 am
I have so many TMX cookbooks, but I only like making recipes I have seen reviewed (and tweaked) on here.  So, I was thinking, it would be fun if a bunch of us agreed to make an unreviewed recipe this fortnight, and report back.  Anyone keen?

Great idea Caroline, we did this a long while back and it worked. It's not a hard task you have set for us with so many untried recipes around - I too will come up with something for you.

I am in for this, if I fail to review (my biggest downfall because I forget!!!) can someone please send me a PM to remind me. It's needs to be a pm so I will see it, if you put it in a post I will possibly miss it in my scanning of posts. I can't keep up these days  ;D

Are we doing books or recipes from here as well?

I thought recipe books so I can justify all the money I spent on them!  I cook recipes from the forum most of the time :)

Great idea Carolyn.  I will jump onboard too. Our last review challenge was of forum recipes so this will be great. I have been looking through my recipe books a lot lately and really want to use them more.  :)

Colombo Powder

2 tb White rice
2 tb Cumin seeds
2 tb Coriander seeds
1 1/2 ts Mustard seeds, pref. black
1 1/2 ts Black peppercorns
1 1/2 ts Fenugreek seeds
1/2 ts Whole cloves
2 tb Turmeric
Roast rice in a small dry skillet over medium heat, shaking the pan frequently, until the grains are a light golden brown, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a plate to cool. Add all spices to the skillet except turmeric and roast over medium heat, shaking the pan, until toasted and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Transfer the spices to the plate. Grind the rice and roasted spices in a spice mill or blender into a fine powder. Work in turmeric. Store the powder in an airtight container away from heat and light. It will keep for several months.

Thank you :)

Not sure Hally but looking at some recipes in the Indian book, I would have a go at toasting the spices at varoma temp/speed 1/ MC off for as long as it takes to start smelling a nice aroma.  One recipe says 5 minutes, another says 20 minutes so I guess at least 5 but longer if you think it needs it.  Remove from bowl, allow them to cool then place back into the bowl and grind 10-12 seconds/speed 10 (more if not ground to your liking - do you know what it should look like?)
Looking at your recipe, the rice is toasted longer so maybe do that on its own first then do the spices.
If anyone else has more to add, please do so as I am only thinking aloud as to how I would do it if I had to without directions.

Caroline, for my homework last night I went off to bed with all my recipe books and was browsing until 12.45am.  Once I started I couldn't stop and it's amazing how many recipes jump out at you each time you have a look through a book.  Before I went to bed I had defatted a pack of chicken thighs and cut up a 1.8 kg piece of blade steak for some meals I had already planned but they went by the wayside once I found others in the books.
I have today made 2 different recipes from the batch of thighs - decided to do half the recipes so that I could cook more often.
I have reviewed the Chicken Jalfrezi  (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=6994.0) from MOTM and the other recipe I did was Turkey Chicken in Osso Bucco Sauce pge 82 MOTM which I will review tomorrow once we have tried it.
With the blade steak I am going to make Soutzoukakia with rice, page 105 MOTM & Moroccan Harira Soup MWOC pge 88 plus convert my own favourite recipe of Goulash which won't count in this challenge but I thought I'd list the others so that other people could choose something different.
Loved the challenge and getting to know my recipe books again, thanks for coming up with this idea  :-*

Love this idea, I don't use my TM cookbooks very often so this is a good time for me to try something new. Will have a look at my cookbooks at the weekend.

OK,  I want to play.  Made Shrimp Paste Chips from traveling with TMX.  Do I just review the recipe?  Here goes......
Not stated,  you need at least 500g of large green prawns to give 300g in recipe.
You have to be careful how you cut the sheets into 8 triangles.  I used a ceramic knife and didn't cut but pressed through the pastry.
We found them a bit bland and next time would add a little green ginger juice and 1/2 a clove of garlic.

On the positive side,  these would make an easy 1st course,  and could be prepared in advance.
They cost about $2.50 per serve
They are not as fatty as prawn toasts as they are not fried.

Should this review go somewhere else?

Good review Chookie.  On the home page there is a Topic for Reviewing recipes. This (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?board=48.0) will take you straight to it, just start a new topic.

Ah, good one Hally.  I have been directing people to this recipe when the EDC one failed them.  I had heard it was good but there are no reviews on the forum to back me up  ;)

This challenge is in full swing, there has been quite a few reviews which I think we have all enjoyed reading and make use off, lets  use our cook books more. Remember when we bought the book, "we just had to have it"  so woud love to see some more from all and eveyone.

My turn, my turn!

I decided on "Fragrant Quinoa" from A Taste of Vegetarian page 43. I've only got the EDC, so had to borrow a couple of TMX books from a friend - such a hardship lol! It is great to feel like I'm giving something back to this fabulous community that I've spent some 14 hours on so far with only a handful of posts!

Now to write the review...
