Title: Read the recipe!!!!
Post by: judydawn on March 28, 2009, 09:28:17 am
Just a word of warning for newcomers as I am still making mistakes in this regard.  Tonight I thought I'd try the Asian style fish fillets pge 104 everyday cooking book.  Did the first bit with the spices then sauteed them as per a suggestion from Joy.  You were then supposed to coat the fish with the spices, place on varoma tray and add water to the TM bowl.  No, stupid me, didn't read it again and I poured the water straight on top of the sauteed spices.  Buggar!! So we had steam infused flathead instead, no way was I starting the process again. Obviously it didn't taste the same as it should have - a simple error but one I could kick myself for.

Another error I frequently made in the beginning was when the timer went off, I checked the food and decided to give it more time, I used to forget to push the temperature button again (just presumed it would continue as previously set but no, it doesn't).  So be careful here too.

That is easy to do - good to see others as impatient as me and not reading the whole recipe thru before pressing buttons.  :D :D

Especially when you have heaps of ingredients in the  *: and then you notice in the recipe you're trying to convert that it says grate the chocolate or parmesan. Something you should have done first when you're using the TMX. :P

but that's why the recipe books are annoying when the recipes are not in the order required!

I hate that too!! That's when I wish I had a second bowl. I'm a shocker for reading the recipe too. I just skim thru it and think I know what to do. Nearly all the time it works out fine though.

Ohhh, tell me about it!!!!  ::)  I'm terrible for reading recipes properly, and often make mistakes.  At least now I have a 2nd bowl it isn't quite so catastrophic when I failed to notice that I was supposed to grate or grind something.

So what do you reckon... as I am having a demo should I buy a 2nd bowl? While I am burning money, might as well burn a little more seeing as I get a discount?

Think that reading the recipes and planning properly would save you the $300 odd for a second bowl.  ;) ;D ;)

But I really would love one.  :-\ :-\

You only make the mistake once on every recipe! I then underline or high-light what I should have done first.
But then if you have money to spare; why not. :-\

Actually, sometimes it would be nice to have 2 machines not just 2 mixing bowls :P :P

I see. :P :P 2nd bowls and 2nd machines for all? Sure why not   ::)

Hey, that eyeroll smiley doesn't work. :(

that's because you know you want to buy all your new friends a second machine, go on  :-*

You know you want to, Rowfyo  ;)

It is completely possible to survive without a 2nd bowl, of course.  But I'm so glad that I bought mine - I wouldn't be without it for the world.  It's amazing just how useful it is.  If you have the money, I'd say go for it.  I only bought mine because an Australian Consultant advised me to get one so that it all looked pretty when I did demonstrations, as my home one would inevitably get battered due to heavy usage.  So I did.  Ummmm - don't actually reserve it for demonstrations though  :-[  It's just far too useful!

Of course, a 2nd machine would be really great too ....

A suggestion to help ditzy people such as myself when submitting recipes. Under preparation, could you (who am I talking to??) put:   Preheat oven to X degrees, line a baking dish with greaseproof paper / grease a 2 litre casserole dish, etc before anything else. Perhaps then go into any other ingredient preparation such as grating chocolate, or milling of flours, etc

Unless reminded at the very beginning I tend to make up something and find that I haven't turned on the oven.

Good call - we like to try to get ingredients listed as they are used too.  Rather than the main ingredient first, as happens with lots of recipes.

I will try to remember - maybe do some editting, when I am not wasting time doing other things.

Thankyou for those tips, as a newbie I need every tip possible.
Why is it that the ingredients aren't listed in the order used as regular recipes are?

They should be but quite often are not mcmich.  Just something to remember when we post recipes we have converted.

Thanks Judy, when making the Carribean Carrot Cake, I forgot to grate carrot and then set aside, so the carrot made the mixture very moist (not so bad, could salvage that). I forgot to put the vanilla in and I often forget to take out the measuring cup before taking off the lid - hence it ends up bouncing all over the bench or in the bowl. I'm sure it's just practice.

I'm possibly a culprit of this. I'm usually eager to get the recipe on the forum before I forget all my jottings of time, speed etc. So watch out for my recipes everyone and read it through first. ;)

I do the same mcmich, mine usually jumps onto the slate floor and I have to chase it all over the place - it bounces well on the slate  :-))

That happened to me for the first time ever the other day. I can report that it bounces well on tiles too. :D

I'm guilty of this too! You would think that I'd take extra care with a new appliance and a new recipe. But no - one of the first things I tried was cream puffs for our street Christmas party. I added the flour at the beginning and cooked it for 10 min, instead of adding it after the first 10 min. Surprisingly enough, they still worked. I filled them with custard, topped them with chocolate and sent them along to the party. Unfortunately, my son started vomiting an hour before the party and I missed the party. By all accounts, they were delicious and the plate came back empty...

It's amazing how things often work out despite our errors. I hope your son is fully recovered now Emeraldsue.

I hope you are all ok with the heat. My thoughts are with you, I hate the heat. We are so lucky only around 31- 32 at the moment.

I find my memory isn't good enough to remember and, all too often, my hands aren't dexterous enough to amend the recipe in writing so I've had to find a solution that works for me.

If I want to try a recipe part of my prep time is to put it into table in either Word or Excel with columns for:
ingredients | instruction/aim/note | temperature | time | basket/butterfly | speed/turbo | reverse/knead | measuring cup/varoma/basket for splashes | anything else
I then use a separate line for each stage / instruction / set of ingredients.
This has the added advantage of allowing me to convert the poxy non-metric measurements that still manage to creep in E.G. Australian tablespoon is 20ml, UK/US is 15ml - a 25% shortfall in something can make quite a big difference to taste and texture LOL.

Then while I'm cooking I can scrawl arrows or new numbers to instruct myself to do extra things, change the order of work, a quantity or a time to suit me.

An iPad app to do this with TMX icons would be fabulous wouldn't it!

Daska I have been able to get around the tablespoon problem by having 2 sets of spoons. One Australian and one British.

LOL - I'd have to remember which to use though, this way I spend the time converting it and don't have to worry. I've not seen Australian spoons here in the UK, will keep my eyes open.
