Golden Syrup Chocolate Cake
« on: August 05, 2012, 08:42:57 am »
Golden Syrup Chocolate Cake
Serves 8-10
Ingredients
250g butter
310g golden syrup
150g plain flour
100g SR flour
50g cocoa
110g caster sugar
160g milk
2 eggs
Preparation
Preheat oven to 1600. Grease a 20cm round tin, lining base and sides with paper.
Place butter and golden syrup into bowl and heat at 600/1 minute 30 seconds or until melted.
Allow top cool for a few minutes.
Add flours, cocoa, sugar, pinch of salt, milk and eggs. Speed 4/ 9 seconds.
Add eggs and milk. Speed 4/ 20 seconds.
Put into tin and bake for about 1 hour 20 minutes. It is a very liquid mixture.
This recipe is adapted from one in the Women's Weekly.
I put a peanut butter icing on this as I had some in the freezer.

This is quite a dense cake but tastes lovely.

Amy - I halved the sugar because it seemed like a lot with the golden syrup. I also didn't ice it because I didn't have time to let it cool. We cut it warm and it went down very, very well. Thanks for a great recipe Cookie, its definitely a keeper.

SueJen - Just taken out of the oven Cookie but only took 1hour 5 mins. Would a fan forced oven make any difference, looks the same as yours and Amys. Would a chocolate frosting be ok or just a vanilla one with a dash of lemon?
I think fan forced must make a difference or the oven isn't working properly as the cake tastes great but is overcooked. The oven was at 160 degrees. Will try again tomorrow and just cook on 140, see what happens.

Amy - I cooked mine for 1 hour 30 mins Sue. I only turned the fan on in the last 15 minutes.

It looks like a mud cake Cookie and another nice, easy recipe too.

Very mudcake like in texture, not in taste though. The chocolate flavour isn't as strong.

I made this today because we had an old friend coming over for coffee. I halved the sugar because it seemed like a lot with the golden syrup. I also didn't ice it because I didn't have time to let it cool.

We cut it warm, and it went down very, very well ;) ;) ;)

Thanks for a great recipe Cookie, its definitely a keeper :D

I'm really glad you all liked it. Amy  I had to laugh as I also reduced the sugar by quite a bit before I posted the recipe.  :) :)

I can't turn the fan off in this oven. The temp is all over the place.  :-[ :-[ :-[
Your cake will taste a lot better than mine.   :) :) :) :)
The carrot cake is great but don't have to cook it so long.
