Title: Bulletproof coffee
Post by: Tasty on March 19, 2014, 12:56:22 pm
I have come across this recently and gave it a go. 3 ingredients and apparently it's good for you.

Here is the recipe for a Thermomix from the Changing Habits website:

Bullet proof coffee - serves one

Ingredients
250ml freshly expressed black coffee
1 TBS ghee or unsalted butter
1 TBS changing habits coconut oil

Method
Place all ingredients into a pot and keep warm while using a bamix or latte whipper to froth the coconut oil and butter into the coffee.  Or if you have a thermomix place all ingredients into the TM bowl, for two minutes, speed 4, 70C, increase to speed 10 for last 10 seconds.

I tried it and I don't mind the taste. The only thing lacking for me is sweetness as I like sugar in my coffee and I don't know if that would ruin the benefits.

I cannot even imagine drinking this concoction. What would be the point of taking a perfectly good cup of coffee and adding butter and coconut oil?

You would be adding more than 25 gms of saturated fat to a cup of coffee that previously had no fat. Yikes!  That would be about half the recommended daily intake for women.

No thanks.

It's all the "rage" with paleo fans! I'm with you Gert, I have a short black with warmed milk, no sugar. Can't imagine mixing in butter or oil.

I'm a straight black with a dash of cold water girl. I am curious about the taste of it.

I don't think I will be having this one, thanks. I love my Nespresso with skim milk all frothed up. No sugar.
I had my very first Affogato today. I have always steered clear of it as I knew I would like it. The icecream was homemade and it was delicious.

Sounded a bit strange but then I read the article. There is also an option to use just coconut oil and that is SO good for you.

I had butter tea at a Tibetan restaurant once and it was incredibly delicious!

Ok I tried it! And I really like it. You wouldn't know there was any oil or fat in it, it just tastes deliciously rich. I didn't use equal butter and coconut oil, I put a bit extra coconut oil and a bit less butter. Apparently it gives you a huge energy boost, which I really need today!

How did you eat your affogato cookie? I do like one occasionally and I never know whether t pour the liquor over the ice cream or in the coffee or just drink it . Sometimes  I just pour some over the ice cream with a bit of the espresso as well.  If there is a cookie as well I may crumble over the ice cream add the liquor  and spoon some coffee on top! And which liquor did you choose? I like to choose a different one each time . Amaretto is nice as well as Grand Marnier but I guess the usual would be a coffee flavoured  liquor. Sambuca is also a favourite.

The Affogato was delivered to the table with the icecream scoop in the coffee. I think it may have had some cream in the coffee too. I don't think it had liquor in it or I would have tasted it. The friends we were with frequent this restaurant a lot and they do not drink at all, so perhaps the restaurant knew this and we didnt get any !!  :'( :'(. I enjoyed it anyway.

This is what an affogato looks like when served properly.

I tried just regular coffee today to see if there is a difference between regular coffee in afternoon or bulletproof as I need the sweetness which doesn't come through when I add sweetener in bulletproof (I tried alternative sweeteners I've read about elsewhere). Not sure if there is much difference but maybe there are health benefits.

I added a dash of maple syrup into the cup (not into the thermomix for the cooking/mixing part) and I found the flavour worked really well.

Interesting recipe   :D had to try it after Laura's recommendation - it's drinkable, doesn't taste like coffee to me. I don't add sweeteners to my coffee and found this sweet enough. Don't know how to describe the taste, its quite nice, but think I will stick to piccolos.

I am interested to see if the munchies stop and I feel full - coconut oil is supposed to be filling. ;D

I honestly don't ever want to try this as I like my coffee strong with a dash of milk and no sweetener of any form.
Now the Affogato is another story and a lovely way to end a meal  ;D

I have to agree with Gert - why put all that fat in?  Even a splash of skim milk wouldn't be as fatty as that. My mind boggles at the taste......

Good question!
A) because it's good for you - check out the attached article for more info
And
B) it tastes delicious!

I do agree that coconut oil is good for us but we can use it in other ways instead of in our coffee.
Same with ghee and butter but not in coffee.

Actually I thought it was an April Fool's Day joke but realize some people really like this. Still not sure putting more fat in the diet is good, wherever it comes from
