Title: TACO SEASONING
Post by: Sonan on February 10, 2011, 06:03:19 am

Home-Made TACO Seasoning

Ingredients:
2 tsp ground chilli powder (more or less to taste)
1 tbsp ground cumin
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp sugar
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp ground oregano
1/2 tsp salt

Method:
Add ingredients to the TM and whizz! You could use cumin seeds and dried chilli instead of the ground versions. Store in a small, air tight jar. To use: 3 tablespoonfuls is the equivalent of 1 packet of commercial taco seasoning mix.

Thanks Sonan, looks like tacos and nachos are on the menu at our house this weekend. It's great that there is an alternative to the packet stuff. How do you think you could make fajita seasoning??? My kids love 'warm chicken salad' which I've been making with fajita seasoning but would love a version without all the nasties in it.

we haven't had taco's for years because of the additives, but this is so easy to do. in fact I just put all the ingredients into a Glad minibag and mixed up, labelled, until we were ready to make them. did 500g homemade mince, and browned using 1 tablespoon oil, and then added the mix and quickly tossed around before adding 3/4 cup of water. There is a distinct chilli flavour if you taste the mince by itself, but along with all the other ingredients in the taco it is seriously good. will have to see if there is a taco sauce here on the forum, but once everyone got munching found it wasn't necessary. thanks sonan  ;D

Just found this on the web, and will post under here as they go hand in hand, and are non TM. Haven't tested myself yet, and apparently it will keep for about 5 days in the fridge, and can be frozen.

TACO SAUCE: (delicious - makes aprox 1 cup)
1 cup (8oz) unseasoned tomato sauce, pref no salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons dried onion flakes
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
cayenne pepper or hot sauce to taste
salt and pepper to taste

Combine all incredients in a small bowl. Let sit for at least 30 mins to allow flavours to blend. Taste for seasoning and adjust as needed. Serve with taco's or add to Mexican style dips and salads.

Thanks Sonan. I had developed my own Taco Seasoning Mix some time ago, but lost the recipe when my computer crashed.
Yours looks pretty similar. I think I had more salt in mine as we love salt!

CP, thanks for the sauce recipe too! I normally use a salsa with tacos. I've made my own before by just adding red capsicum and some chopped jalapeno chillies from a jar.

Loved the seasoning thanks Sonan  :-*

I only adjusted amounts by a smidge

Ingredients:
1 tsp dried chilli flakes
1 tbsp ground cumin
1 tsp paprika
11/2 tsp sugar
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp ground oregano
1 tsp salt

I used 2 Tablespoons in my Mexican meatloaf (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=6525.msg85263#msg85263), and that was perfect for us.

Just made this now. My daughter is allergic to onion but not garlic. So I just used garlic powder in place of onion  ;D

Delicious, easy and just like store bought without the nasties. I reduced the chilli to 1tsp as we have two little ones. It was about the same spiciness as the packages. We had it in soft wraps with cheese, salad and sour cream.

Made this using 1 tsp chilli powder as have little ones. Was delicious in our taco mixture tonight (fried up onion and carrot with mince). Very easy and will definitely make my own from now on.
