Title: I am thinking about a kitchen aid
Post by: Halex on December 16, 2013, 10:41:56 pm
Do I really need one?

What does everyone use them for?

Thank you sooo much.

HHW :)

Probably not but do you want one??

I still use mine to make some cakes as I prefer the texture to the TMX, eggwhites for meringue and our pasta maker is a kitchen aid attachment. I don't use it a lot these days but I don't make many cakes or sweets.

I love my Kitchenaid. It's perfect for eggwhite, but I also like to see the mixture as it processes for the cakes and biscuits that I bake.

Plus it looks so pretty on the bench. :)

Well I have a kenwood chef

Soonge Cakes, meringues, pavlova, it has a processor attachment on top so I slice veggies for salads, potato bakes, onions for onion marmalade to keep the slices, apples for tarts. Larger batches of bread.

Meringues too. :)

I have a Kenwood Chef (actually the cooking one) which I use for bread doughs because I find the hook easier than getting dough out from under the blades and for whisking egg whites.  I also use it to cook when my thermomix is busy doing other things.  I did have a bowl lift commercial Kitchen Aid but it and I never got along.  I got frustrated with the beater pattern of it and sick of constantly scraping it down.  There is now a scraper beater that you can get which I believe has solved a lot of those problems.

I bought a KA recently Halex and have used it a few times. To be honest I'm so flat out at work and being an empty nester most of the time  that I haven't used it as much as I want to. I will in time though, and I bought all the attachments and the cookbook so I'm set. I made pasta the other day and it was so easy, and I've made a few cakes as well which have worked out a treat. I still use the TM more tho  ;)

PS: I thought the icecream attachment was hopeless as I'm used to my compressor machine

Wouldn't be without mine Halex.

I have a Kenwood Chef and wouldn't change it for the world. So reliable and it produces the most beautifully light sponges. I have just had to replace mine - the first one was bought in 1977 and stopped working last year - 35 years old. What more could I ask?

I love my kitchen aid and would not even think about getting rid of it. I love to use my kitchen aid for cakes and also use it for making biscotti. And of course it's pink and pretty!!  :-)) :D :D

I also love my KA.  Use it for cakes, meringues and the pasta attachment is great.

I have a kenwood chef and use it for sponges, buttercream and meringue. Thermie does the rest, but I wouldn't be without my kenwood. Great to have both.

I have a Kenwood too, but more often than not use my small Sunbeam hand held beater.

I have a kitchen aid. It's currently in storage but I really miss it for pasta, ice cream, meringue and banana cake.

I have a KA and use it for cakes, pavlovas, making icecream (I have the bowl attachment) and pasta. I must admit it's been neglected since Thelma though.

I still have a hand beater like Cookie for the odd occasion that I need one. At least they take up less room lol.  The one I have is like a super charged one so doesn't take long at all so standing holding it isn''t an issue. I got it from Aldi a few years ago and it's been really good. That year they had a cheapie one and then this one, so in brand names I''m sure there will be power differences.  It's cheaper Hally lol ????  I don't make heaps of cakes though because I end up the one eating them lol. Kids and DH aren't big on cakes.

There is now Hally, mine is 18 years old and there was just the one back then and not many colours so easy to make the decision.

I have a red kitchen aid and I love it!  It's looks so pretty out on the bench.

I use it like most others - for egg whites, cakes etc.
I have the mincer attachment and I use that a lot.  I often buy a whole rump and mince it myself.  I'll mince lamb and chicken as well, instead of buying mince.  I have sausage stuffer attachment as well, but I've not used it (yet).

You probably don't need one Hally, but you definitely want it (so buy it ;D)

Post by: Halex on December 18, 2013, 04:57:24 am
Now your talking Katie, a mincer. As you know I buy meat in bulk. Mmm almost there.....

Is the artisan the one to buy?

You've always said you are creative with storage Hally.  ;D I would like one for the mincer and pasta making attachments _ too bad I'm into minimalism  :-))
Title: Re: I am thinking about a kitchen aid

its best to keep it on the bench as its too heavy to be lugging in and out of cupboards. I got the Artisan.

I'm with CP on this one.  Mine's on the bench too.. way too heavy for me to be lifting on and out of cupboards!! It's next to the TMX :)  I have the Artisan. After the TMX had been around a while the KA was referred to as "Mum's Museum Piece"....but I do use it and, as others have said, does a better job with some things than the TMX..

I have the raspberry ice (hot pink) one. It is an artisan one but maybe the platinum range? I think platinum might just refer to a selection of colours.
Title: Re: I am thinking about a kitchen aid
Post by: CreamPuff63 on December 18, 2013, 12:47:19 pm
I thought the only difference was the bowl they came with - Artisan come with SS and Plat come with glass (and possibly the scraper with half rubber?) I didn't compare motors because I'm not interested in that. Perhaps the colours are special to each range, but there are just so many to choose from thats the hardest part.

Mine is almond. I wouldn't mind the mincer. But doesn't tmx do this?
Title: Re: I am thinking about a kitchen aid
Post by: zebraa on December 18, 2013, 07:41:03 pm
My husband bought me a Kenwood (wanted a KA or assistant) for egg whites and cakes as I don't live TMX cakes for sponges etc and it is a complete waste of money. Honestly, if it doesn't happen in the TMX , it doesn't happen. But I am using it to feed a family of 5 good nourishing food, not make fabulous food.

I use the kenwood for my Christmas pavs and that is it. Would love to get rid of it and just get a hand-held or sunbeam egg whisker but b/c it was a pressie I can't.

So yes - I wouldn't get one as I don't see the advantage while having a TMX.

Post by: Halex on December 18, 2013, 08:29:36 pm
Zebraa, I sort of agree with you which is why I dont have one. Mincing in the TM is OK, but the KA is probably better.

I really dont have any bench space, I could re-arrange. Still thinking.

Post by: Wonder on December 18, 2013, 09:08:41 pm
Mine sits on the bench and even though I don't use it a lot there are things I think it gives a much better result than the TMX

Why don't you try an electric hand mixer first ?
A cheaper option and it might be enough.
I have one of those too. Easy to store.
Good luck deciding .

Hally,  think of where you will put it.  They are too heavy to keep shifting in and out of cupboards.  Unless you bake a lot of cakes and meringues you don't need it.  Yes the mincer and sausage attachment are nice,  but I use the mincer about once a year and the sausage attachment about every 4 years.   Like Cookie,  I use my small hand held beater more often if need be.  I have 2 Kenwoods,  one commercial and one domestic.  The commercial one is in a box in the shed,  the other is on the bench in the laundry,  where it can be used.
Good luck in trying to decide.

No I dont make too many cakes as I would eat them ;) happy with the cakes I do in my TM

Meringue I dont do often & yes I have a little handheld mixer whuch was used over a year ago & I am not even sure where it is.

So really I do not need one at all.

Now another TM ............

THANK YOU EVERYONE :-*

What were thinking of using it for Hally?
I guess you need to weigh up if its worth the real estate on your bench....like Chookie, I reach for the hand beater over the mixer.
I've mentioned before that I don't love mine, and I've had it for many years...if it broke tomorrow I wouldn't replace it.

With regards to mincing, it would be ok for small batches, but long & tedious if you were planning big batches.....I would suggest getting your butcher to mince for you when you get your beef done....their commercial mincers do it in no time.  We get 2 big tubs of mince when the butcher comes, and it takes only minutes.

Thanks Maddy, now if the queen of cakes doesnt use hers I have no chance, lol.

Yes real estate on my bench was a big issue. ;D I have a back bench which has the Delonghi coffee machine, spice rack, microwave, TM, so no room. My island I like to keep empty.

do you have a dehydrator? I saw some at Aldi yesterday - i dropped a lot of hints to DD but she was ignoring me so I think I might go back and buy one.

Editing to add that I did a search and found that I started a thread about the Aldi dehydrator in January this year. I obviously didn't end up buying it early in the year so think I will go back tonight and pick one up. DD works beside an Aldi store and I have to pick her up anyway so a good excuse. I've also got a lot of fruit that I need to use up so might try some dried fruit or fruit leather.

Hally, glad that you've made your decision :)

Just in case anyone's thinking of a KitchenAid: the texture of the cake is completely different. Superior to other mixers I've used before. I've had an old Moulinex that mum gave me, a Breville stand mixer and a Sunbeam hand whisk. Plus the TM.

Storage is an issue too in my small kitchen. I keep in under the kitchen bench and lug it out when I need to work out my arms ;D
