Title: I HAVE given up smoking
Post by: dede on November 19, 2012, 11:10:29 pm
Yes I know it's a terrible habit, and I have been doing it for way way to long (about 25 years :o) I have made the decision that this will be my New Years resolution.
I have set my self a date now so as to get my mind prepared for it. If I give up earlier then all well and good. But for now its set for New Year's Day.
I thought I would tell as many people as I can of my plans so I'm more likely to give it a really good go. What better place to announce it than right here.

I would love to be smoke free before I turn 40 so this is my last chance. My friend who has been smoking as long as me is also giving up as well. So we can support each other through the good and the bad.

Cold turkey is going to be my method as I have tried the patches, and the medication but with no luck. So cold turkey it will be. :) :) :)

That it I'm about to press send, no turning back now, you will all be reading this within a few minutes.

Ok posting now ...
...
Right I'm posting right NOW :)

Yes I would think I would be spending quiet a bit of time on here, also gardening, cleaning, cooking, walking etc etc. I will be keeping myself very busy. But I'm looking forward to getting rid of them once and for all. And if I happen to put on weight so be it, I will deal with that later once the smoking habit is gone for good :)

Being a few kgs over target is healthier than smoking, plus you can loose them, quick to come quick to go. ;D

Not snoking will. Be a challenge as its a habit, start trying to do things out of routine now with the smoking. If you have a smoke after a cupa, dont have the smoke have a glass of water instead etc, get me ???

Yes health and money are certainly a big part of giving up, also the social aspect as well. People don't like smelling smoke, or seeing smokers. I'm done with it, it's taken over my life for far to long. It's time :)

And I really can't afford to smoke, we scrape by as it is. It makes me feel guilty :(

goood luck .... and oooommmming you energy ... but i reckon cold turkey is the way to do most things.

My sister got hypnotised and it worked a treat for her. i used to smoke many moons ago .... but the moment i found out i was preg with our first ... i stopped and have pretty much been smoke free ever since ....((except the few drunken moments in the early days where i forgot i didn't smoke and made myself sick  :P :P :P) .....  i dont think that trigger ever leaves you .... if i didn't have kids i wonder if i could of ever given up .... i guess that will be a unanswered question. And i guess that is what lead me to my obesity ...having kids and giving up smoking..... so now i have the band ...which i am glad its my option.

fingers xed for you

Dede you can do it. I gave up cold turkey 2 1/2 years ago whilst DH used the medication. I was in my thirties and had smoked since 16. How terrible is that. But I haven't looked back and will be honest it is hard and even now I sometimes feel like one. But I feel amazing and will never go back. I found having alcohol and no smoke the hardest and kinda don't drink as much now either but do enjoy a good sauv blanc when I go out or special occasions. My trick was to sip a glass of water or suck on a water bottle when I felt like one. This helps suppress appetite too. I also started an exercise regime to get my mind off it and 2 1/2 years later am smoke free and 17kgs lighter. Good luck and your forum friends are only a tap away :)

My DD tried everything to quit but always ended up smoking  again until she went to a hypnotist.
She has now been smoke free for 3 years and financially much better off.
She said it was the easiest method and stopped immediately after her session. :)
Good luck Dede, we are all behind you  :)

Smoking is so not acceptable these days Mandi so I'm glad you have made the decision to quit.  I went cold turkey 21 years ago and it was surprisingly easy. DH did the same a month later.  I never did understand why people spend all that money on patches etc.  My weight really didn't alter in the long term, I used to diet all the time then once I stopped, I put the weight back on + some.  Now I eat more carefully, have whatever I want in moderation and I am happy with the weight for my age.  Be happy in your own skin I say.  The price of cigarettes is so high these days I really don't understand how anyone can afford it, that alone is good enough reason to quit but the health benefits will be great.  I used to get a sore throat all the time but rarely have that or even a cold these days.  Good luck, we are all behind you. :-* :-*

My friend was a heavy smoker - 2 packs a day and DIDN'T want to give up. Her husband gave up due to health reasons and she still didn't want to give up, I am not sure what changed her mind, but she went to a session for about 4 hours, she insists was not hypnotism but I think it was, she hasn't smoked for over 5 months now and has not had a single smoke since she came out of the session. I think it cost about $500 and am not sure how much a pack of cigarettes is but her husband thought the cost was worth it.
Hope you do well.

Mandi, I am so proud of you for taking this step.  Nicotine is more addictive than heroine so this is what makes it so hard to give up.

You sound so positive that I am sure you will have no problems.  Some days will be worse than others, but once your mind is made up that is easily more than 80% of the battle.  You WILL do it because you WANT to do it and that is important.

Hally's idea of doing something different at the times you would normally have a cigarette is a good one and I am sure that will be a big help.

I started typing this answer and got interrupted for about 10 minutes and see that there have been 8 replies in that time period - you have certainly got the power of the forum behind you.

You have to be ready in your head to give up and succeed. For me I did 4 months of boot camp and just couldn't breathe when we had to run. I likened it to what emphasemia (?) would be like and from Day 1 on the boot camp I gave up. The test was having a couple of wines at a BBQ that same week with my friend puffing away in the next chair. I was so amazed that I didn't even get the urge and never have about 5 years on - so strong was that sub conscious connection with getting emphasemia. That breathlessness I now know is exercise induced asthma, but it certainly did the trick. Hypnosis may be good to try, I did that for child birth. "They" say it is harder to give up smoking than heroin however who is "they" ? I reckon its the ciggie companies who say this to brain wash their customers that its near on impossible. Your mind is the most powerful tool so its gotta be convinced that you really mean it this time. Go for it Mandi, you can do it.

Maybe put aside a savings account with what you would normally spend on ciggies and treat yourself at the 1year anniversary. Commit yourself and open the account now so you are ready straight away to put the money in. Your kids will be happier with your decision than you'll ever realise.

Sending huge support from UK. You can do it.
Tap away on here anytime day or night, someone will be here.

I've never smoked but DH did long before I met him.
Gave up cold turkey about 15 yrs ago and never regretted it.
He couldn't afford it and wanted to stop anyway for his health.

Sending +ve vibes and healing thoughts to aid you through the process.

Mandi you go girl. Personally I don't care who smokes so long as they do not come near me because they really really  stink. Very good friend used to come for lunch but I asked her to sit away from me. One day she came for lunch and plonked herself next to me and I said she smelled great. She also had her teeth whitened which was not cheap and never smoked again. Something to consider.

You can do it!

You can do it Mandi, it's the first few days that are the hardest, I gave up about 30 years ago, went cold turkey haven't looked back. I gave up before cigarets were $1.00 a packet. We thought we were saving a fortune back then. Both my DS smoke wish they would give up.

Good on you dede. It will be so much better for your children as they won't have to see Mum sick with the consequences of smoking. I know that is a hard thing to say but yesterday afternoon we had a phone call from SIL. She was ringing to tell us that
DH's brother was in emergency waiting to be admitted to have the last toe on his right foot removed. He will now have no toes on the right foot and two on the left.  He can hardly walk as the veins in his legs are so narrow. He has had surgery on them several times to try and help but they keep narrowing.
Two years ago when he had a severe heart attack, they had to take veins from his arm for the bypasses as the ones in his legs were useless. He had another heart attack in hospital but they could do no more bypasses as he has no veins to use. This is all caused by smoking for 40 odd years. He is 64 years old.
So Mandi when you feel like a smoke let me know and I can always be mean and nasty and send you a photo of the toeless foot.
What you are planning to do is really great. :-* :-* :-*

Cookie that is a shocking story ... Mandi, that alone must be incentive enough to give up.

Hope your SIL's DH's brother (?) comes through this one, Cookie.  I am always amazed at the number of patients / smokers standing around puffing their lungs out when we drive by hospitals - surely the fact that they are in hospital would be enough to encourage them to stop (this comment from someone who has never smoked ;)).
Title: Re: I giving up smoking :D
Post by: CreamPuff63 on November 20, 2012, 02:15:58 am
Ouch cookie, its shocking when they show those ads too of people who are dying of cancer and yet they have a hole put in their throat just so they can poke a ciggie in and puff on. Even when you smoke yourself you just tend to ignore these graphic images in the hope that its not going to happen to you. There is a ciggie pack with a pic of a little girl lying in a hospital bed (passive smoker) that is the spitting image of my DD2 when she was that age and I always used to try and ignore it. Smokers are treated like lepers nowadays.

Cookie, I heaved reading your post, that must be so terrible to see. Does he still smoke?
Reminds me of when I was at the doc.s on Friday - I was actually in the room with the doc, he got a phone call asking him to go to the reception as a man was there with breathing difficulties, Dr had to rush out, and go to him. I heard him saying to another doc as they were waiting for an ambulance..."he's a smoker isn't he. Hope this is enough to stop him."  But the biggest shock was when I saw the man...he is only about my age, he has a child in Miss6's class.   :-\
Sorry Mandi, don't suppose you need these scare stories, you will be strong, I can feel it!  :D
Title: Re: I giving up smoking :D
Post by: dede on November 20, 2012, 02:59:26 am
All the scary stories are good to hear, as a smoker you really do ignore them, and shut off any thoughts about what might happen in a few years. I'm determined to stop this dirty habit. I'm sick of hiding it and ignoring the what might happen if I don't give up.
Thanks everyone for your support and advise, and even the stories. It will all help me stay a non- smoker when I get an urge.

You can do this Mandi. We have seen how strong you are ;)

My uncle died a few years ago from lung cancer. It was operable initially, but because he refused to quit smoking the surgeons refused to operate. So it just got worse and then he died. He had 5 young grandchildren of his own too.

Good on you Dede. It's a really hard task but you can do it. It's great to do it with somebody else too so that you can support each other. My DH and I gave up at the same time and we are so pig headed neither of us wanted to be the one to fail. That was over 9 years ago.
I found to help in the first few weeks to give up the things that also reminded me of smoking. The one major one was alcohol (I know, it seems almost impossible but it really does help and it's only for a few weeks!). I also had to give up coffee for a while too cause I always had a smoke with my morning cuppa. You can substitute with tea or juice or something and then after a few weeks slowly bring back the coffee. Good luck with it. You can do it.
Title: Re: I giving up smoking :D
Post by: dede on November 20, 2012, 03:46:26 am
Yes I always have a smoke with my cuppa tea. Might have water instead for the first few weeks. Good idea. I don't drink alcohol so that's not an issue. But I drink heaps of tea, and always have a smoke with it.

As for cost I buy packs of 40s which are nearly $23 at my local shop :o, I'm guessing someone will work out what it cost me per year. I know it's a massive amount.

No DH's brother no longer smokes.  I think he would be gone by now if he did. We just heard that they are doing an angiogram on his leg to see how blocked the veins/arteries are to see how much they chop. Last toe or more. I am so glad I never smoked. I tried to a few times but I didn't like it. DH gave up nearly 40 years ago, thank goodness.

No not yet DJ, New Year's Day is the day. But saying that I might give up earlier than that. I have just set a date which myself and my friend have decided on. I think it would probably be best to wait for her as well for us to do it together.

Excellent dede, great decision. I've never smoked so can't give you any advice but can tell you some horror stories if you start to loose motivation. I wonder if you will get cranky? When my dad gave up after 55yrs he was unbearable mum nearly stuck a cigarette back in his mouth. Sadly he passed away 2yrs ago from a smoking related cancer.

You can do it mandi. I've never even smoke a single cigarette but drink plenty, I've always hated smoking and fortunately for us none of our friends smoke. I can't imagine spending that sort of money on something that's doing you such harm?? Imagine how different your lives will be and how much more money you will have for enjoyable things. Start planning your holiday now!!

;D Wonder, I drink plenty too!

I gave up some 30 odd years ago. My father died of lung cancer due to smoking. He was a pilot in the Air Force during the war and they actually gave them cigarettes to keep them calm!

The hardest time was 'break time'. Sitting down with a cuppa or a glass of wine. You need to do something with your hands. I suggest getting some worry beads.

I think it's ridiculous, the idea of plain packaging for cigarettes. Smokers ignore them! In fact, people are just buying little cases to put their packets in. I wish the government would put the excise money into health care for those who do smoke and will need the care later. Would make more sense.

Good lock Mandi!

From a smokers point of view the plain packaging is a total waist of tax payers dollars, as it really makes no difference to a smoker. Although I have heard of a few people who are turned off by the pics and are talking about quitting. But time will tell I guess.

And as for the cases that are available I recently brought a packet of cigarettes that come in a reusable tin with no pics on it, just warnings. The cigarette company got away with doing that ready for the plain packaging lol. :o.

After quiet a bit of research I have decided to go to my GP and get some nicotine patches, as it will give me a better chance of kicking this habit for good.
I read that going cold turkey only has a 5% success rate, where using medical aids like the patches gives me a 25% success rate. So the 25% with patches and the 50% with positive thinking should give me a 75% chance of being smoke free
( sounds good to me anyway) ;D

Hi  Mandi, I thoroughly recommend the patches, I used them when I gave up years ago. They take away the "edginess" of having to have a cigarette and then you can concentrate more on breaking/changing your habits of when you use to have a cigarette. Great to hear you have decided to quit.  ;D ;D

All the best with giving up.  I gave up 34 years ago cold turkey and I often remind myself  how strong I am to succeed in this.  It's  something you can definitely do.  You just have to tell yourself you will never smoke again and move on.  It's a tough addiction to break but very satisfying to beat it. I hated the control it had over me.... Always thinking about the next smoke. Great to be free.

Well today I made an appointment to see my GP to get a script for Patches (not till 17th December) and have talked to a lovely lady on the quit line who has talked me through some hints and tips on the best way to use the patches.
She has recommended that I stick a patch on and continue smoking while cutting back, while doing this I can focus more on the things that trigger me to smoke (like with a cuppa, after a meal, while on the phone or with friends) etc.
so I'm starting the patches as of tomorrow as I have enough her to keep me going until I get to the doctor, and focus on cutting back to a point where I can stop all together.

I'm still uncertain if this is the best method, but I will give it my best shot and see how I go. The lady is ringing me back next week to see how I'm going :)

Good luck Mandi  ;)

When I used the patches I found that for the first 15 mins or so it would be a bit itchy so I would put the patch on just before my shower and then by the time I'm out and dressed I wouldn't notice it.    :)

All I can think of is the extra shot of nicotine you'll get when you have a ciggie?

Dede what is your REAL reason for giving up? The one that really cuts it for you.

Keep strong and you can do it Dede.
Your DH is doing well as its not easy.
I smoked until just after I got married. My DH hated it as his mum had been in bad chest health for years.
She died on our 1st wedding anniversary the day b4 I turned 21. She was 47  :(
It took me 3 attempts to stop but I never looked back and it's the best thing I ever did.
You just have to take it day by day and congratulate yourself at the end of each smoke free day.
It gradually becomes easier  :)

Good luck dede! I know exactly what you are going through. I smoked for 10 years, was a pack a day gal for a while.

I quit smoking 5 years ago, which was my 5th attempt. So far, the most successful one! I quit cold turkey than completely changed my lifestyle--did a 3 day detox and turned vegetarian and have taken up yoga.

I found that helped a lot because a) I got rid of the toxins sooner than I would have without the lifestyle change and b) the changes helped distract my mind from smoking.

I have to admit I had the occasional cravings, especially when things got stressed at work. But instead of reaching out for one, or even for sweets, I ran. Running calmed my mind.

Quitting smoking was one of the best decisions I made for myself. That and perhaps getting a Thermomix (still waiting for mine to get here!).

xo,
Dhitri

Good luck Dede for your quest to give up smoking. I gave up about 2 months ago (again) and feel much better for it. I don't seem to have much trouble once I set my mind to it, it's just setting my mind that I have trouble with. Over the last 5 years I have not smoked more than smoked and when I am not smoking i have a bank account set with automatic transfers each week equivalent to my habit costs. I use the saved money to holiday each year and since then DH and I have been to Vanuatu, Singapore, Thailand, Fiji and will be going to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in March 2013 on the money.

Make sure you save the money so that you have something to show for it as it is a great incentive to stay smoke-free! Good Luck!

Dede, good luck, when my late DH gave up smoking he put all the money he would have spent on cig's in the glove box of his car and at the end of the month he bought it inside and put it on the sink and said shall I put a match to this and burn it? Because that is what I have been doing.

I like that Aussie Brenda, I'm going to put the extra money away in a separate bank account, and try to build it up to a nice sum by this time next year :)

There are 5 of us all quitting together. Was nice to buy my last pack of smokes yesterday.
Wish me luck ;D

Go Dede, yay you can do it. Get sick on them tonight, hoefully  put you off for ever :)

OK, Mandi, can you remember the very first cigarette you ever had?  Can you remember just how FOUL it tasted?  Did you wonder why everyone persevered until they got hooked?  Well, keep that foul taste in your mind and know that, from now on you will never - EVER - have that burning taste again.  You are going to leave all that behind you and, you will do it.  Never weaken and think, "I can have just one, I've been so good until now" - always remember, just giving up you have been better than good, you have been great and you do not need to have these things anymore (and you will be rich as well) - what more could you want - health, clean breath, fresh smelling clothes and extra cash - FABULOUS!

Marina is right - you will be rich. Put the money away each week you would have spent on cigarettes and treat yourself to something nice each week you don't have a cigarette.

Good luck Mandi - make your next cigarette your last, why wait until the new year arrives ;)  If you can cut it out at midnight, I'm sure you can jump the gun and cut it out a bit sooner.  Throw the rest of the packet in the bin and keep busy doing something you enjoy.  Life is great for a non-smoker, it's just not socially acceptable anymore I find.  I saw a chap buy a packet the other day and couldn't believe the packet cost $17 - it has been so long since I looked, I must admit I was shocked.   :-* :-*

Mandi if you are going to continue smoking you will have to make sure your family will be happy to help you change over oxygen tanks later. Are you be able to afford the medical costs associated with emphasemia and throat/lung cancer? Do you wish to burden your family with funeral costs at a time when they will probably have weddings and will be missing your presence? Do you want to miss out on holding and seeing your children and grandchildren? Have you gone for a walk in a cemetary lately and thought you could be here soon? Are the ciggies so important to you that you would rather smoke away the family budget? Are the butts in the ashtray what people think of when they think of you?

These questions may be harsh, but then again the consequences of smoking don't come out of a fairy tale book.

And Judy I will wait till tonight to have my last smoke as we having visitors who most of them smoke. So we will all have our last smoke together then destroy what ever smokes we have left.

And CP I love your little gruesome speech, and its so so true. Think I might read that one over and over again anytime I feel like a smoke. Actually I might print it out and put it on my fridge and give everyone else a copy too :)

CP never a truer word has been spoken. My BIL now has no toes on his right foot and not many on his left. He is only 64, has had several severe heart attacks and strokes. Can hardly walk as all the veins in his legs have narrowed severely. They have been replaced but narrowed again. He has no veins left in his arms or legs to repair his heart if he has anymore heart attacks. He has great difficulty in seeing, can no longer drive and the strokes have left him a cranky person.
ALL OF THIS CAUSED BY SMOKING

Dede you must succeed in your effort. Think of those who love you.
By the way I was told that food tastes so much better without the cigarette taste in your mouth.
Good luck. Take one day at a time.

And DH has already gone through the hard parts and was still smoking 1 every couple of days and has now stopped completely so is finding it quiet easy now. :)

When my DH gave up (c. 25 years ago), he just stopped one day.  He said he always knew he would stop, and had been smoking since he was 11 or 12 but had not thought about just when he would stop, then when someone said to him one day "... I don't see why we should put up with your smoke all the time", that just 'clicked' with him, he stopped there and then and told no-one, including me!  He had no withdrawals at all.  He used to smoke roll your owns and he said later the hardest part was remembering that he had stopped - he kept going to his tobacco tin to roll another one (he didn't want another one, it was simply ingrained habit), so, you see, not everyone goes through terrible withdrawal, and it looks like  you are another one of the lucky ones.

Congratulations Dede!  I stopped smoking 35 years ago.  I can remember thinking when I gave up that I didn't want to be forever thinking about when I was going to have my next cigarette.  Wanted to be free of the habit.  Hardest thing was when doing things that you normally do with a cigarette like having a coffee or a wine or going out.  So glad to be free of it. Hate it that my son smokes :( he's 32 and I don't let him smoke in front of me because I hate to see him smoking. He will give up one day I hope.

I have found it extremely easy this time around, but I'm still waiting for a major craving that makes me tear my hair out (I hope that doesn't happen) but if it does I have to be strong and resist the temptation.
I have set up a direct debit into another account to put the money away that DH and myself would normally spend on cigarettes each f/night. Should have a tidy sum by the end of this year ;D

CONGRATULATIONS Mandi!!!!!! I have only just caught up on this thread .... leaving all the big ones to last.

I too want to tell you how proud of you I am :-* :-* :-*

I gave up cold turkey 9 years ago and it was my 4th or 5th attempt (this is the longest) and i had been smoking over 40 a day for nearly 20 years (I started far too young). My Dh gave up a month later.

For anyone else who is thinking of quitting ... a homeopath can help you with drops to help rid your body of the toxins etc quicker and help with cravings ... we found out too late for us to be able to use them ;D

My eldest DS has just given up too. I was the same and wouldn't allow him to smoke in front of me as it upset me.

Mandi day 5 is three quarters done and you are doing so well. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AS YOU WILL DO THIS!!!

Sending lots of sweet smelling hugs in support  ;)

This is the start of your next non-smoking day.  Keep up the good work and try to conquer any cravings.  Dumping drugs of any sort (and, as you know, there are dozens of different drugs in cigarettes) out of your system can be hard, but you've got this far, so don't let them take over again.  Be strong and stay on the straight and narrow - you can start boasting about how well you are doing now as you put another few dollars into your dedicated bank account with a happy, self-satisfied smile on your face.

Thanks Cuilidh, I'm working hard to overcome this horrible addiction. I certainly don't want to fail myself and give in. I think my friend is caving though, she has had 2 smokes so far and I have a feeling she will have more. :)

Sorry to hear that your friend is having a harder time giving up than you are and hope she can succeed in stopping with you just now.  I believe that nicotine is more addictive than heroin so breaking away from it cannot be easy.  I have never smoked so cannot even begin to imagine what she is going through, but I am so pleased that you are travelling the road well (with only a wee speed bump of cravings here and there at the moment) - but you are now so determined to give up I am sure you will succeed.  Is your friend getting support from home?  It may be that just now is not her time to give up, perhaps she needs to wait a little longer, then you can be a great example and huge help to her when she is ready.  Fingers and toes crossed for both of you!

Dede, when you get a craving have a glass of water in one hit so your  tummy is bloated, that should take your mind off smoking, then start cooking :)

Keep it up Dede and do not give in to "just one won't hurt".
I did that on my first two attempts at giving up and it's a NO NO !!!
The only way is none and you are doing soooo well. :D

Day 5 completed Mandi - WELL DONE  :-* :-*

What you need to remember now is that you HAVE given up smoking ... you haven't smoked in 5 (well 5 1/2 days for you as it's after lunch for you) now ... all you need to do is remain a NON SMOKER - and you can do this ... you have that power :)

Dede I don't know if this works for smokers but when I'm dieting a big glass of water and going and cleaning my teeth always takes away the cravings, maybe carry a small bottle of mouth wash and rinse your mouth as I said might not work but a suggestion.  Good luck.

I'm definitely not having just one. I think that just one is what will make me come unstuck.

I just spent my smoking money on a Ryobi line trimmer, I have been having fun tidying up edges. Pretty warm here today so I'm having a pit stop before going back out to do some more. :)

To be honest Mandi, I'm surprised your birds loved you as much as they did while you were a smoker. Most animals I've had don't like smokers :-))

I'm looking forward to meeting you in Adelaide :D :D

I knew a chain smoker  who's dog died of lung cancer.

And just think I won't smell like smoke :)
Was funny today a person came in my house to buy one of my birds and he smelt really bad from cigarette smoke :o.
That was me only 9 days ago.

A friend of mine always used to shower and wash her hair before she came to visit me . She was paranoid about how she smelt but she used to smoke In her car so there was no point  because she always smelt  of stale cigarettes. When  she stopped smoking she got rid of the car, got her yellowed teeth whitened and she never smelt of stale smoke again. Then she started nagging her DH to quit because she could then smell how bad  he stank. She refused to sleep with him until he quit.

Yesterday I was at the shopping centre and smelt someone behind me. When i turned to see who, I saw a women, the perfect specimen of emphysema, struggling and wheezing,  stopping to draw breath, pushing her walker and stinking of cigarette smoke. She was grey with watery faded eyes and I stopped to let her pass. I gave her a big smile as I knew she was not long on this earth.  She stopped to get her breath again and gave me a smile back. I felt really quite sad. Not a nice way to die.

Gretchen your anti-smoking messages beat those that are printed on the packets - as gross as they are, they are only pictures. You tell the story of real people and real problems.
Title: Re: I HAVE given up smoking
Post by: gertbysea on January 09, 2013, 09:47:44 pm
I think  it interesting  that it took Mandi only 9 days to realise how bad  cigarette smoke smells to non smokers.

I have said it before that I have no moral objection to smokers at all I just can't stand to be anywhere near them as they make me sneeze and gag.

When my friend sold her car she had to have it professionally detailed and steam cleaned on the inside and it still stank. She finally sold it to a smoker who thought it was fine. YUK! Thank goodness she never smoked in the house. She probably would have had to get it totally repainted. As it was she did buy a new mattress , pillows and replaced a few things that retained the smell. She was mortified when she realised how bad it was. She kept asking me to sniff stuff. Kinda funny and sad really.

Gert

Thanks everyone, yes I am proud of myself for getting this far. Will be even happier when I reach 1 month smoke free. I still have cravings at times. But still not to bad. And certainly not enough to start me smoking again :)
The kids often asked me to stop smoking, and now I have finally did it.
My DH, Sister and brother in law have also all succeeded in staying smoke free. And my friend has cut down from 30 a day to about 3 a day. Eventually she will throw them for good. So we are all doing really well. :)

Haven't been on the forum too much lately. But I'm still a non smoker ;D. Been 3.5 weeks. Can't believe I'm almost through a full month. It does feel great, and I'm feeling heaps better too. Still the odd craving but nothing I can't handle.
And I have saved over $400 already. Now that's crazy :o

Our car has just pooped itself and needs some work on it. My non smoking money will no doubt have to go towards repairs :(

That is superb ... when you put it down in statistics like that it really brings home where you have been and where you are going.  Just think about it, what good would all those cigarettes have done you had you smoked them ... NONE AT ALL, instead, look at all the benefits you have gained in your (almost) first month of not smoking.  Well done!

I'm still here ;D, and yes I'm very very happy to say I'm still a non smoker. It's been a little over 6 weeks now and I have saved over $800.
The price of cigarettes has gone up from $23 for a pack of 40s to $26.75 :o
I'm so glad I'm now out of that habit and can now smell the roses. :D

Wow dede well done.. Must be coming up to 2 mths now.. Well at the end of the mth.. Good on you!!!

My dh used to smoke over a packet a day until he met me in Paris ..I said I couldn't live with a smoker so it was me or the cigarettes lol.. He said he would quit cold turkey but I kept smelling cigarettes on him which was easy as everywhere you went in France in early 2000s you reaked of cigarette smoke.. I stopped eating out as smokers were everywhere and you couldn't taste a thing.. Very hard for someone to give up ...I found out later that he had been having the odd cigarette but alot less than he had been smoking and today he is smoke free..

Keep up the good work :)

I think we may have spent more money on our new items than what we would of spent smoking :), but its been much easier paying for them.
The concreting alone cost us $2000 which is about the amount I have saved alone from not smoking.

Dede, love the heater.  Yes you need a big door.  We load ours with the logs from front to back,  not side ways.  More heat and they burn longer.
Title: Re: I HAVE given up smoking
Post by: dede on April 14, 2013, 11:08:24 am
Yes we load ours from front to back as well, I think it's safer that way too, less likely for burning wood to roll out. :). Our other heater was struggling to burn over night either which is horrible when we have a frosty morning and no heat. :)

If you have your wisdom teeth out you cant smoke for 3 days, as it causes a very painful  condition called dry socket.

So you can have your wisdom teeth out now with no withdrawal symptons.
