Wow, this is great!!  I want to try this with rice-almond milk - a couple of dairy-free friends were just asking me at our last cooking class what we could use instead of condensed milk!  Thanks all!  :)

Measure   Ingredient
6 cups    Whole milk
4½ cup    Sugar
½     Vanilla bean



OK - I'm making this now - almost finished.  I've added another 10 mins on to the cooking time as it still seems a bit too watery after an hour.  It did start to froth out of the hole in the lid early on, but never overflowed.  You know - I had to make the big sacrifice & scoop of the froth - and then I had nowhere to put it - besides my hips  :D  YUMMMMOOOOOO!!!!!

I also dropped the speed back to 3 after about 40 mins as Thermie is making funny rattly noises at 4 (OK at 3 & 5 though).

As I've already got the basket in the bowl, I won't bother using another strainer.  That will be enough to keep the vanilla pod out of the bottles  :)

ETA - It ended up being more like 1.5 hours, but I had more at the end than the original recipe stated & it was not as thick & syrupy as the canned stuff.  I'm going to wait & see if it thickens slightly as it cools, otherwise next time, I'll just cook it longer.  Tastes delish, though!

Still a bit too runny.  Might try reducing it a bit in a normal saucepan tomorrow.

And thanks everyone else for the tips too.  I'm almost brave enough to try it again.  Nothing quite like a sugary milk mess to turn one off cooking!

Our part-cooked Dulce de Leche didn't become thick like tinned condensed milk.  The kids have used it in a few ways anyway.  Waste not...

Ha!  That's what I thought, Bel!  Maybe you could try it in the garage, then if it overflows it won't matter so much!  :D

Thanks, got the speed hint now. 

I did threaten to run an extension lead to the outside table.  It's the icky-ness over the TMX which bothered me most though, more than the kitchen.  Last time I placed a tea towel under (a towelling one, quite absorbent) AFTER weighing in everything, so clean-up was way less.

After seeing Thermomixer's video on the Dulce de Leche thread, I'm brave enough to try again!

Yeah - that's how I read the recipe to mean, so that's what I did.  I think the hole in the lid is possibly too small to allow sufficient evaporation.

GemiNy, the steaming basket is supposed to sit over the hole in the lid to stop splashing but to allow for evaporation.

Has anyone successfully made condensed milk with any of these recipes as yet?  I'm going to make another batch of Tenina's chocolate fudge (little slices of heaven) but don't want to risk ruining the fudge with dodgy condensed milk (400g chocolate just CANNOT be wasted  :D )

I'd love to hear any feedback - and advice as to whether I should stick to a tinned version for the fudge.

Condensed Milk in Thermomix

Ingredients
100g water
220g powdered milk
80g sugar.

Method
Blitz the sugar for a 8 seconds on speed 9. Then add water.
Cook 5 minutes at 80 degrees on speed 1 until sugar dissolves.
Add the powdered milk and cook another 3 minutes at 50 degrees on speed 4.

your recipe that you posted is the one that I have made quite a few times with great success. I can't taste the difference between the can and this one. love it, and highly recomend it  :D
