Bread / Re: Bread Rolls with Psyllium Husk

Yeah, I was trying to work out how to word that delicately.  :-[  :-[   :-[  Anyway ...

The oat bran was a disaster.  I couldn't even get it out of the tin.  With other loaves I've made I haven't had to do more than lightly oil the tin but that loaf was stuck like cement.  I'm too scared to try it again.  Might try using it for rolls instead.

I think the Asian fish is going to be my next attempt and I'll also try the chicken.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I made this tonight and it was delicious!  Wish I'd read the reviews first though because I did end up with a huge amount of sauce leftover.  I should have added some more meat (I did use about 650g but would have probably done 750g plus more veg).  I left out the cayenne in deference to the kids and it got a big tick of approval from both of them.  My little one struggles to maintain his iron levels so anything that gets him eating meat makes me a happy mummy.  This is definitely going to become a regular meal in the Bear household.

Horses for courses, I guess.   :D

Thanks for the suggestion.  If I ever get back to this recipe, I'll give it a go (but with so many new things to try that's probably going to take a while.   ;D)

Made this last night as my first dish in the Varoma.  We weren't fans.  I followed the recipe exactly but mine weren't done after the 20 minutes.  May have made the balls too big, I'm not sure.  I had to give them an extra 15 mins.

They went down well with the children - I think they really liked the very soft texture - but not with the adults.  Flavourwise they were fine but I think I would have preferred them cooked in the frypan.  I've never had steamed meatballs before and they really were a bit mushy for me (and hubby).  Not helped by the fact that I served them with mashed potato and soft vegetables.  If I were to do it again, they'd need to be served with something with a lot of crunch.

Thanks Judy.  Yes, I had read the reviews although I think it was before the last one (i.e. the least favourable one) was posted.  My kids are pretty easy-going foodwise which is lucky for me.  I think they really liked how soft everything was in this meal.

I think my next Varoma attempt might be one of the fish dishes.  Not tonight though.  Need to give hubby a rest from my experimentation I think.   ;)

Well, not a huge success.  They did get a thumbs up from the kids but a definite thumbs down from daddy (and me if I'm honest).

It was very easy though so I'm not giving up on using it (at least not yet)!  Just have to try something else.  I'm going to hunt through this forum for some recommendations.

I'm currently cooking my very first meal in the Varoma.  I've been too scared before now.  I haven't even seen it at a demo so I'm very nervous.  I've made the Swedish meatballs - something I've never even eaten so it feels a bit risky.

Wish me luck!

Thanks Cookie.  I will do.  Only problem is that because I am trying so many different recipes in the TMX, it is taking me longer than expected to get through the first batch!  We'll have to have a few friends over for an indian night so I can use it up.

Forgot to say that I pulled out the bulk of the cinnamon stick (some had broken away), the bay, and a couple of the cloves, (basically whatever was easy to take out) and then blitzed the rest.

On the Tikka paste, I did a half batch so I wonder if I forgot to half the chilli??  Also weighing only 5g on the TMX probably isn't super accurate (since it only gives increments of 5g) so next time I might weigh them on a diet scale before adding.

Cookie, just mentioned the Tikka paste in the thread about Korma.

I made my Tikka paste to recipe and it was HOT.  Delicious but hot.  I originally made it to use for the butter chicken but have since made the Chicken Tikka Masala as well.  I loved the flavour but it was too hot for the children.  It even had the two of us sweating (had to have a beer with it).

Next batch of Tikka paste I will cut back on the chilli otherwise I'm going to end up having to cook separate adult/children meals.

I made this tonight and have to agree that it is delicious.  Flavourful enough for the adults but mild enough for the children.  And it is so easy to do - it is definitely on the "cook again" list.

Cookie, my Tikka paste is very hot so I wonder if I did something differently.  My Tikka Masala was way too hot for the kids and even had us sweating (and we are both huge indian food fans).  It was delicious though!

Bread / Re: Bread Rolls with Psyllium Husk

BellaBear,  love the look of this recipe and can see why the kids like it.  If there is a problem with the  Psyllium husks,  maybe you could substitute rolled oats or oat bran.  They are going to be light in texture when you look at the ratio of flour/ water / yeast/grain. I often add some LSA to the mix.

Good idea.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I always have oat bran on hand as a thickener so I'll give that a go tomorrow.

The only thing to remember with Psyllium husks is that anything they are taken with will be bonded to the husks during digestion.  So you can't count this towards your nutrition... this is why they are best taken with water only, at least 30 mins before food.

Thanks for the info xMeo.  I'll do some reading.  It's interesting because...umm...it's definitely working in the fibre department.  Adding it made a noticeable difference to the children.

I gave my breadmaker away virtually straight away.

I could also do without my food processor and juicer (don't use or particularly like either of them).  I could get rid of my blender (I hardly used it even before the TMX) but it is just so pretty so I probably won't.

Definitely could not get rid of my scales.  I have two - a "diet" one that does small quantities very accurately which I use all the time (even with the TMX).  The other ones just look pretty.  I'll also keep the hand mixer (for when TMX is in the wash) and stick blender.
