Title: Tomato Relish
Post by: dede on April 15, 2012, 02:00:02 am
Tomato relish

I got this recipe from fulllittletummies.blogspot.com.au
But have changed slightly to suit us.

Ingredients
1kg tomatoes
2 Large onion peeled and quartered
150 g sugar
2 tsp mustard
2 tsp curry powder
pinch of cayenne pepper
1 Tbsp salt
2 Tblsp ezy sauce
2 tbs plain flour (or more to make thicker)

Directions
Place tomatoes into TM bowl and chop for 2 seconds on speed 4-5.
Place onions in TM bowl. Chop for 2 seconds on speed 4-5. Do not over chop.
Add remainder of ingredients ( except flour) and mix for 10 seconds on reverse speed 3.
Cook for 30 mins, temp 100, reverse speed 1. MC off and steaming basket over hole.
Mix flour with a little water to make a paste and pour into TM bowl.
Cook further 5 minutes, 100 degrees reverse speed 1.
You may need to add extra flour and cook longer if it is not thick enough.
Pour into hot sterilised jars.

You should be able to find it in Coles or woollies. It's a bottle (stubby size) of spices for sauce and relish making. I will see if I can find a pic.

I don't like the smell of ezy sauce cooking so never use it, my recipe is very similar but the only liquid is vinegar to barely cover and that replaces the ezy sauce.

I'm like you KC but I don't like the vinegar taste in my relish, I just can't come to it. So I don't use any vinegar now and only use Ezy-Sauce. I guess it comes down to individual choice.
And fundj it is used in tomato relish, tomato sauce, green tomato pickles, plum sauce etc. it keeps for a long time so I just use it slowly over time and keep it in the fridge (I don't take much notice of the use by date). It's very concentrated so you don't need to use much. :)

Made two batches of this today.  Didn't have any ezy sauce so just used 1 tablespoon of vinegar.  Very nice.

Both my grandmothers used to make Tomato Sauce and Tomato Chutney using Ezy-sauce. It is a very Aussie product and must have been around for a very long time(I am almost60) and my grandmothers used it well before that.
I now make my own sauce and Chutney every year using their recipes.(which are on the Ezy-sauce bottle or web site).
I usually make up 10 kilograms of tomatoes at a time and make 2 batches of Tomato Sauce and 1 batch of Chutney.
I am very grateful for the Thermomix conversion to a smaller amount and will give it a try.
I have also just made a batch of Apricot Chutney also using Ezy-sauce. It tastes great and is really yummy with curries. A bit like
Mango chutney.

Yes my grandparents also used the Ezy-sauce, I have Ezy-sauce in the fridge at all times for when I'm making my relish and sauces. Love love love fresh relish :)

Do you think Worcestershire sauce would work instead of Ezy sauce?

I think you would need to use vinegar to replace ezy sauce.

How much does this make? I just want to make sure I have enough jar's before I make it...

Also, do you think canned tomatoes would work?

Makes about 3- 4 jars of relish (larger jam jar size)

And yes can tomatoes do work as I have used them before, although I don't add all the juice as it makes it too runny.

Great, thanks Dede - I was thinking I'd drain most of the juice anyway. I'll give it a shot soon. Probably next week.
