I take photos and send the sales agreement to my insurance agent, especially when I purchase an appliance or ?? which is more expensive than average and they will add a "rider" that may cost a few dollars more, usually it is negligible, but that insures that if there is a fire or burglary, I will get the (pro-rated of course) value of the more expensive item.
As an example, my fridge cost 2700.00  but my homeowners general policy provision only allows 500.00 for a NEW fridge.
Same with my big flat-screen TV and the plasma TV in my bedroom,  my Mac computers, my high-speed scanner, all top of the line.
I also have special policies for my more valuable antiques but that's with a specialty insurer as my homeowners does not carry that type. They want photos and precise descriptions of each item and keep a "catalog" as part of the policy.
The most valuable books I keep in a safe deposit box at the bank - that collection is worth more than my house, although I got them for practically nothing some forty years ago...  The insurance company require a huge premium to cover them so I don't keep them in the house.

Where did you order from Julie?

Marie

Last night I sent an enquiry to the UK where they are made and they sent me back a reply saying they had forwarded it on to their supplier here in Australia (link below).  The Oz site doesn't give much information but they did email me first thing today. I ended up ringing them and spoke to Charles (02 88522720) who I ordered from.

You won't be sorry.  I use mine for so many things - checking to see if microwaved foods are hot all the way through - often are still cold in the center when the outside is hot.

I check ALL baked goods - bread to be sure it has reached 95° C.  And cakes, sweet breads, etc., have reached 98° C.   Anything that contains a lot of sugar has to reach that temp in the center so it won't be soggy.
With fruited breads or cakes  be sure and test in more than one spot because if the tip of the probe hits a piece of fruit, it will register HIGHER temp than the surrounding dough.
You should also use this to test boiled or steamed puddings, which are extremely dense and sometimes are not cooked through to the center.

If the desired temp has not been reached, put the item back into the oven for 10 minutes then check again and if you have two items in the oven at the same time, check BOTH.  Sometimes (and no one can explain why) some things will reach the "done" temp before others that are right next to them.

More photos of Aston - pretending to be one of Santa's reindeer.

He is very patient while mama is doing silly things.  Few of my other basenjis would put up with this stuff.

Marvelous tree, Maddy.  Very evocative of the season in your part of the world...

We have had a night of very high winds and my fence is now "decorated" with some lights and tinsel stuff that blew off the roof of a neighbor down the road.  He is a highway patrol office and on duty today and his wife is (as she says) 10-months pregnant... (Due in mid-January) so the stuff is going to have to stay on the fence until tomorrow.  I've had to restrict Aston to the little yard next to the deck because he loves to pull on strings and stuff so the wires would be much too attractive to him.

Aston is a Basenji - once known as the African Barkless dog.  He is a red and white, they also can be black and white; black, white and tan(tri-color); brindle and occasionally brindle-pointed tri-color.

Aston is a champion and sire of one champion and there should be a second champion, a son, within a short time.

The Thermapens are quite expensive but they are the most accurate of any thermometers - they manufacture them for laboratories etc.

They are made by Thermoworks and they now ship to Australia -
you can check the shipping information for an estimate.

I have a lot of their products, timer thermometers and others...

Aston loves to cuddle in a blankie and insists on having his own and he never chews them, although he does sometimes pull them off "his" loveseat and takes them into his bed - he doesn't sleep in his bed, just uses it to store his toys.
This new blankie got the "treatment" as he pulled it onto the floor and rolled in it, on his back with all four feet in the air.  When he was satisfied that it had been "broken in" sufficiently, he was happy to have me put it back on the loveseat and he settled in for a nap.

Naturally, he is a very spoiled boy.

If you have a heating pad you can use that.  I have a large one that is 24 inches long and even wrapped part way around a container it will maintain the temp.
Of course it is now winter here and I keep my house fairly cool.  During the summer when the temps are in the 90s (F) I don't even need to use the incubater.

An accurate thermometer is ESSENTIAL.

My TMX thermostat is way off.  When it is set at 37 C the true temp is  much hotter and certainly too hot for the yogurt culture to live.

I posted a photo a couple of years or so ago of the hole I drilled in the flange of my TMX spatula so I could insert the probe of my Thermapen.
I can't find the original photo so am taking a new one so new members can see what I did.

It is very handy - I use it for testing the temp of sensitive stuff like chocolate.

Andies were great but too big for what I wanted Kim.  Needed something small that could sit on a table in the lounge within reach of Geoff for whenever he wanted a snack of healthy nuts.  I always buy him the salted millionaires mix from Charlesworth Nuts.

The single ones don't take up a lot of space and there are ones with smaller footprints.  Like this one that holds about have a box of cereal - mine holds a full box - regular size.

Also check for "candy dispensers" because they are smaller.

Here's the double one.

The single one is on loan to a neighbor who is having a party tomorrow afternoon.  She is using it for Chex mix.

The containers I have seal well enough to keep cereal crisp even during the rainy season and during the hot and humid "monsoon" season we often have during July.

I had some little coin-sized snack crackers in one for several weeks and they remained crispy right to the end.  Better than when they are kept in the boxes in which they are sold.
