Easy Fig Jam
Since I discovered figs, I have made quite a few fig jams looking for one I liked. Well I don’t just like this one I love it! And it’s easy.
I halved the original recipe and got one largish jar of beautiful jam with soft fig pieces through it. I think this is what I did (forgot to make notes - still getting used to cooking with my iPad ;D)
Ingredients
500g ripe figs
250g rapadura (changed from 450g)
1 small vanilla bean, split
half a cinnamon quill
Pared rind (all in one piece if you can) and juice of 1 small lemon
Method
Place all ingredients in a glass bowl, cover and stand overnight at room temperature.
Next day put in tmx and bring to the boil. 4 min/varoma/speed 1/reverse MC off.
Scrape down sides and cook for about 40 min/80 degrees/speed 1/reverse MC off.
Take out the vanilla bean, cinnamon quill and lemon rind and seal in sterilised jars.
Notes
- This jam is thinnish so if you like it thicker you may need to cook longer.
- Since I needed just one jar I sterilized it in the microwave: Half fill clean jar with water, zap on high for 2 mins, rest the lid on top and let sit for a few minutes. Remove hot jar and lid (I use silicon gloves to avoid burns) empty, then fill with jam.
Original recipe is from Taste (http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/22058/easy+fig+jam)

I love fig jam. When I saw the title of this post I wondered how your fig tree could be producing so quickly. I saw figs this morning for $6.99 kilo. Now I wish I had bought some. :'(

Sounds great, I love figs but have never had fig jam.

Me too Wonder.I might just have to try this. ;D
-
I hated it as a kid but I'm sure I would like it now that my taste has finally matured ;)
-
Especially if you made it yourself Judy.
-
There's that too Cookie. Anything you make yourself does tend to taste nicer.
-
Djinni, this looks very nice. I love fig jam but have never made it. My Granny made it and added preserved ginger. I am wondering if it could be made from dried figs. Might give it a go. Thanks for the for the recipe.
-
Chookie I was looking at a cake recipe today that used fresh figs. It mentioned that you could use dried figs if you soaked them for an hour. For the cake they suggested soaking them in a syrupy wine! I'm not sure how it would go for jam.
I've just checked the recipe and it says use hot water or the wine and soak for a couple of hours.
-
Thanks Cookie, I will give fit a go.
-
I have this soaking to make up tomorrow. I think it is going to be delicious.
-
Cookie, are you using fried Figs?
-
No Chookie I picked up a kilo of fresh ones for $7 which I thought was good. They are only small but taste nice. I soaked it yesterday and am about to make it now.

My delicious Fig Jam. It made two large jars. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/06/3a3yzeve.jpg)

Looks good Cookie 8)

Looks very nice, Cookie. I paid $5 for a very small jar of fig jam at the Farmers Market. Must be only jam that I have bought in40+ years. I bought it because I thought Ral didn't like it and so this might satisfy my longing. He tasted it and said he liked Fig Jam.
-
That's funny. :D ;D ;D
-
I have this on cooking at the moment, I was given some delicious big really ripe figs half a kilo....yum
-
I've been given enough figs to make half this recipe, should I halve the cooking time?
-
My jam is delicious, I cooked it for longer than stated, about 15 mins extra and on 90 degs it turned out nice and thickish, the lemon peel was yummy I wish I had put extra in I had Meyer lemons and it was like candied peel.
-
When I went to make this yummy jam again yesterday I realised that I had halved everything except the sugar in the original post :o :o :o
Have edited now to make everything half quantities. So sorry :-[ :-[ :-[

My jam still tastes wonderful. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I was given about 2kg of very ripe figs so I made a batch of this tonight. I didn't let it sit overnight I just bunged it in the bowl and cooked it on Veroma for 10 minutes before reducing the heat to 100 and cooking for 40 minutes.
I did use some Jamssetta to make sure it set and I sub out the cinnamon quill for some glace ginger and grated ginger.
I am very happy with the result. I am going to make another batch on the weekend. :)
-
There's nothing like home made fig jam.
-
We were also given some beautiful figs, and I have made 2 batches of this jam. After the cooking time I found it was still runny, and the figs were in big chunks, so I took out the cinnamon, vanilla bean and lemon rind and gave it a whizz on speed 5 for a few seconds. Then I cooked it another 15 mins at 90 degrees, then another 10 at Varoma. Turned out gorgeous! Thanks for a great recipe!
-
I made another batch of this today. I think this batch is even better than the last one. :)
-
I am green with envy over all your figs. I paid nearly $4 for 2 precious figs. Too expensive to make fig jam.

I'd love to make some more jam, but can't get figs cheaply. Oh well. Have to be happy with the Plum and Raspberry jam I made.
-
OMG this is delicious, I'm not a big fan of jam, (but DH is) if the bowl wasn't so hot I would have licked it clean lol.
a dear friend gave me a bag full of Figs, so I decided to make this lovely jam. Didn't have enough rapadura sugar, added some coconut sugar to make up to required amount. Still have some figs left, might make some more do you think white sugar would be ok.
I cooked for 10 min extra on varoma, word of warning use the steaming basket on top or you will have jam everywhere.
This made 1 and a half jars plus the spatters lol.
-
I'm sure white sugar would be fine Jeninwa. I now use my Varoma dish on the top instead of the basket. It seems to catch those extra big splatters. I don't put the lid on it of course.
-
Yes white sugar would be OK. I used raw sugar in some jam recently. Ok but different sugars affect the setting time.
-
I've got my figs ready to make some more of this delicious jam.
-
Jen, love fig jam. Have just planted a fig tree. Hope I live long enough to see some fruit. ,! x
-
Chookie, I bought a little fig tree at the growers markets on Sunday it had one fig thats just about ready to pick. What I've read is they fruit in one to two years so I'm sure you will see it fruit.
-
Jen, thanks. That is good news.
-
For those in Perth I see Frozberries have a new product, fig purée.

That would be nice. bought a pack of 4 figs yesterday to have with breakfast Museli.

A friend rang from Augusta last week to ask if I would make him some fig jam, if he brought me the figs. Of course I said yes. I used this recipe twice and got 4 lovely jars. I overcooked the first batch a bit so it’s fig jam/paste.
-
Cookie, when I over cook jam and it’s a bit too thick, I just add a bit of water or lemon juice and cook for a few minutes more. However it’s sometimes hard to tell until it sets up.
-
Thanks Chookie. My friend was very appreciative but probably too polite to say anything. 😀😀😀😀😀
