Egg-free "hollandaise" sauce
« on: March 14, 2014, 02:22:50 pm »
Hi all,
I can eat egg whites but not yolks, and am ok with dairy but not gluten.  Does anyone have a gluten-free egg-free hollandaise recipe?  Obviously not for serving over poached eggs...but with salmon and asparagus which was a previous favourite meal for me!

I checked Quirky Cooking since that seemed like a likely source but came up empty.  I was thinking maybe something with cashews and nutritional yeast?  If I can't find a recipe I might try to create one on my own, and we really don't want that!  *cue theme music for impending disaster*

Thanks in advance!

I don't know if these are any good, but could be a starting point to get you on the right track, neither have eggs.  This one is a dairy free Bechamel Sauce, and I also have an egg free aioli mayonnaise (unfortunately I don't have the link but could PM the recipe if you were interested in checking it out).  Neither are quite hollandaise, but experimentation might get you closer.  Good luck.

Found this recipe Laura. It contains flour but would substitute a GF flour.

Thanks for the suggestions!  CC the one you linked unfortunately also has soy (sometimes I think it's easier to list what I'm NOT allergic to) in the "vegannaise" which I'd never heard of but looked up.

But you set me on the right track searching vegan hollandaise.  I don't know why I didn't think of that!  I found a few options with cashews, which I will try out. Very easy to convert to TM.  I'll add the links here in case anyone is interested.  Will post reviews once I've tried them. :)  Tha

I'll look forward to hearing how you got on with the sauces you found, I love hollandaise sauce so hope you have success with them.  I had been tossing up trying the suggestions I made earlier as a hollandaise, but was pretty certain they wouldn't really work ... I am just forever hopeful.

I use cashew nuts in lots of sauces, they are so versatile.  Fingers crossed that one or more of these will be successful for you.

Wow, I just made a hybrid of a bunch of the sauces with cashews, lemon juice, olive oil, nutritional yeast, mustard, cayenne and paprika and it's BETTER than any hollandaise I've ever had!  I will try it again this weekend measuring more carefully and will post the recipe. I'm so excited!!! Thank you thermie for giving me back one of my favorite foods!!!
