Sticky Date Pudding. Page 338
I thought I would make this using the chip.
After cooking the dates in the water you are instructed to scrape out bowl and put aside. What a nuisance when you haven't a second bowl.
I ignored this and added the butter and sugar to the warm dates and zapped a bit, waited for the mix to cool a bit and added the eggs and flour. Mixed all on reverse for a few seconds.
I used cake release on 2 tins and baked for 40 minutes at 180. Perfect. Why so much fuss when a simpler process produces an excellent result. ?
This serves 8.
Made the sauce as instructed and gave it the extra 2 minutes.
P.S. Could serve this as cake.

Chookie, the method is the same as in the old basic cookbook and after only once doing it the long way I've always just put it all in together after cooking the dates and leaving to cool and haven't noticed any difference in the texture of the finished product. I've also replaced the dates with golden syrup and it worked well.

It makes you wonder how much the recipe writer uses the thermomix.
-
Thanks Wonder. This is pretty well what I did. Good idea to use GS. Will try this next time.
Cookie, I also wonder.

When I make this, I firstly mill the sugar for the pudding then remove and set aside. I then make the sauce and scrape it out to a jug as it thickens on standing. I don't wash the bowl before carrying on with the pudding.
I remove the dates and water after warming but again after giving the bowl a good scrape out, I don't bother to wash it before proceeding with the recipe. Turns out great and no need of a second bowl or having to clean the bowl between steps. :)

JulieO that's a great method. We really like this recipe and now that I know it works well with GS in place of the dates it's another favourite that my mum loves.
-
Julie, great idea. I keep a container of already milled sugar ready for all baking, one of white and one of raw.
-
I used to have caster sugar made up ready to go too Chookie, but I don't use as much these days so I just make sure I check the recipe if any is needed and do that step first if so.
Saying that, why do I get the recipe emails sent from RecipeTinEats? Today's was a wonderful looking Magic cake, that I just have to give a try. Her photos of all her food are just spectacular and just make you want to make everything she posts about. ;D

I just checked out that website Julie, some lovely recipes I'd love to make.

I didn't even bother with the recipe in the EDC, but used one that I've converted. It's on the Recipe Community and has loads of positive comments.

Yes I've made a few things from there and they've turned out really flavoursome. ;D

meganjane, I've used your recipe a number of times and it's lovely. I think that was where I go the idea to substitute the dates for golden syrup.
-
Julie, checked out that site. Lovely recipes and will try some.
I think your photos are equal or better. Don't be so shy.
MJ, I must try your recipe.

You are such a sweetie Chookie. :-*

I'm so glad I found this thread. I made this recipe yesterday and followed the EDC to the letter. It was a waste of time cleaning out the bowl before creaming the butter and sugar. It is good to know that the texture of the finished pudding is the same if you put all the ingredients in together after letting the date mixture cool a bit.
