Chit Chat / Re: What have you been doing today?

Phew, a busy day in the office.  I have got the GST return done (a whole day early), and even the PAYE return which isn't due until next week. Plus lots of other little jobs.  Trying to get a bit more organised with my paperwork and filing systems - a little tricky working both at the office and at home, I end up lugging too much around.  I don't think I will get it fully sorted before the kids go back to school, but once they do I am determined to get it properly under control.

The jam looks so good - one of my favourites. Still waiting for mum's plum tree to come to the party for this year's plum things though.

So far I have been working through most of the rhubarb I harvested from the garden:
Rhubarb and pear sponge pudding (will do the sponge later)
Rhubarb mousse stage one (to finish tonight or tomorrow)
Rhubarb coffee cake in muffin tins - half in freezer already.
Curried rhubarb chutney

Have also made tortilla chips from the leftover tortillas from dinner last night.

I am planning to make another batch of rhubarb curd, but now I think I might switch to using up the giant zucchinis from mum's garden. A zucchini slice is up first.

Thanks Cookie. Fairly similar to my adaptation, but I used a little more butter and sugar, plus juice of a lemon. Will try this with some more of the rhubarb as there is still a big heap.

They look pretty darn good to me! I am going to make these this week.

Have used a recipe I had for lemon curd that had variations for "fruit curds" (passion fruit, berry and apple/lemon) so I adapted that a little and will see how that turns out. Is cooling in the fridge now, and the initial taste test was pretty good.

I just chopped a huge bunch of rhubarb from the garden so would love the recipe quantities too, if anyone has it still. Have googled for the curd and for the meringue pie, but no luck so far! Will start with a crumble instead. :)

Babies and Kids / Re: What are the Kids doing Today

Kids have been bugging me since school finished, so today we did the stationery shopping! And then went to spend their Christmas/birthday vouchers.

Haha, love those driving mitts. I prefer the long oven mitts with a pocket at each end, so just as well I am not in Aus as I don't think that would be the best for driving ;)

I just had to bite the bullet and order a new kobo. I have been planning to for a while and got given some money towards it for my birthday last week, and then today picked up my kobo to find a section of the screen has stopped working! I am a bit annoyed as DS was going to inherit that one when I upgraded. I might have to go and get a real book from the library to keep me going!

Otaki is now quite known for it's outlet stores along the main road - good shopping but a pain for traffic! They do have a bit of a market but not that much. We mostly go to a garden in Levin to get our fruit and vege - but that's where mum is now, so it's near her and we know it. There are quite possibly plenty of others that I haven't discovered. On the way home yesterday we stopped at one just out of otaki that we used to go to often (probably 20+ years ago), and we were not impressed at all. Not great produce or prices. Felt we would have been better off at the supermarket!

Just having a quick read of the forum after a couple of weeks away.
The TMX has been for it's first holiday in the caravan- we left Boxing Day and got back today. It was such a lovely relaxed holiday. Only went about an hour away, spending three nights in Otaki beach, and then the rest of the time at Foxton beach (where the caravan is staying and we will visit it there - just no room here, and having to build a ramp each time we want to get it in/out of the driveway is no fun! )
Got home to a stinky freezer which had to be emptied (fortunately rubbish day is tomorrow). DH had put the Xmas ham bone and remains in the freezer to make soup with, but sadly the bone didn't really fit and the freezer was slightly open all that time. Well, that's one way to clean out the stray items from the back of the freezer!

Chit Chat / Re: Secret Santa 2014 presents

I have been spoilt!

A beautiful lunch bag (which hopefully is too pretty for DH to steal for his lunch). A box of cupcake cases, a sweet fairy to go on my tree, choccies, and a bookmark and brooch (an elephant, funnily enough in colours that match my fabric covered notebook that lives in my bag).
What a clever and generous Santa - thank you!!!

Wow, beautiful hampers. I think I might need to improve my presentation.....next year! Mine will just be popped into a gift bag.
Made a big batch of taco seasoning last night, and just doing some shortbread biscuits today, and I think that's about it. Some are getting other little gifts popped in - little items I have found during the year, or for my sister I have knitted a cowl and also done glass etching on some old moccona coffee jars.

Salads / Re: Yummy Brown Rice Salad
« on: December 11, 2014, 07:48:50 am »
Thanks for bumping this one up CC. We had it for dinner tonight with some crispy coated chicken pieces. I thought I would have some for lunch tomorrow, but the kids ate a reasonable amount (they struggle with rice salads, but made a good effort and seemed to like it) and DH kept going back until it was all gone and was still asking if there was a bit more.

We have replaced a Samsung remote directly from Samsung NZ, and it was quite reasonably priced - I think it was about $20 plus gst and freight. So fingers crossed Panansonic is similar.
