Title: Teriyaki Beef- Meat on the Menu
Post by: Caroline J on October 22, 2010, 05:26:34 am
Recipe Name: Teriyaki Beef
Book Name: Meat on the Menu
Tweaking details: None, done exactly to recipe
Review: Delicious.  My soy sauce was "light" and I think it was a bit light on flavour for that reason.
Score: (out of 5*) 5  Super quick, easy and healthy.  Will make this again and again.

Thanks for the review Caroline J. I pulled out my MOTM book today looking for inspiration. Think you have just provided it. Thanks ;D

In my opinion, MOTM is the best of all the recipe books Gabry - worth buying for sure.  I love the ones with pictures of every dish but MOTM has more appealing recipes.

Good one again CarolineJ.

Think MOTM is best tested and latest, so we are all getting better at writing recipes now.

Made this tonight using chicken (larger pieces and longer cooking time) and carrots.
Definitely a winner!!

Would add more liquid next time to get more sauce (I love sauce though the older kids aren't so keen)
Everyone loved it, a real hit.

This is an absolutely yummy recipe but you have to watch how the meat is cooking. I had some already sliced up beef strips which were probably too thin and some wrapped around the base of the blades and some of the meat on top wasn't cooked through. After stirring everything and adding another 2 minutes to cooking time it was fine and the entire family ate it up on no time with zero leftovers.

Can I kindly ask for some nice person to please pm me the recipe?

I've asked my consultant for details of the book - cost, availability but it's been 3 weeks and still no news from the consultant. I don't think it's going to be arriving anytime soon. I do plan to get the book though but hoping to be able to test out some recipes as I've got some free time coming up soon.

Thanks in advance!

I finally made this tonight (using chicken steaks cut into 3cm cubes) and adding 1/2 pkt stir fry vegies which I cooked in the varoma dish whilst the bowl was doing it's thing.  Only one complaint, boy was it hot.  I used one of those large red chillies so the heat shouldn't have been as intense as one of those small ones (I did remove the seeds and it wasn't a huge one, about 6cm long).  I also added a splash of boiling water after the 5 minutes cooking time but the chicken wasn't cooked so did it for another 5 minutes.   It was really nice but just a tad too hot for us.  Will use a small amount of sambal oelek next time instead of a fresh chilli..  Thanks Maddy for the idea of using those frozen vegies, it certainly stretches the meal. No one else commented on the heat of the dish so I was very surprised how it turned out.  Am I a whimp or what  :-)) :-))

I wimped out and didn't use chillies as the kids don't  like spicy food. I am in no doubt that the recipe works really well without chillies!!!

  Am I a whimp or what  :-)) :-))

No Judy.....I'm the same  :)
I didn't use the fresh chilli either, but used 1 tsp chilli flakes, and the heat was just perfect.
I also used 700g chicken thigh cut into thin strips, and that was cooked for 12 minutes.
I also doubled the mirin, soy, sugar and cornflour quantities.

Adding in the stir fry veggies did help pad it out, and next time I think I will cook more soba noodles.......it just didn't make the distance for Hubby's appetite and the kids & I.

Mirin is like a sweet rice wine type thing you could possibly put white wine or just water??? Maybe?

I made this tonight for dinner. I put some fresh carrot, zuchinni, green beans and brocolli in the varoma when cooking the noodles and served on the side for the kids and all together for DH and myself. We all really enjoyed it. Youngest DS did comment that the noodles were a bit spicy - was hesitant in adding the chilli but did it anyway, while eldest DS said the noodles had "no flavour" - go figure!

DH and I both really liked the whole meal (agree with Maddy though on the amount of noodles, not enough for us either) and the kids enjoyed the meat. I am not ordinarily a beef fan, so this is a great recipe for us to increase our red meat. (Although since getting Thermie I have been eating proper red meat which I mince myself rather than buying mince, so I figure I am getting more actual meat for my mince than before anyway). May even do it with rice next time as the kids will be happier with that.

I tried this last night, and to be quite honest...it didn't blow me away. DD liked it, but I thought it was average. The mince mixture was very sloppy even though I only put 85g water in, and the corn scones were quite dryish. 1/4 tsp cayenne is sufficient for us. Probably wouldn't make it again, but we have leftovers so its on the menu again tonight  :D

Made this tonight
Used udon noodles as all I had in pantry
I added more meat
Doubled cornflour, mirin and soy sauce
Added only 1/4 tsp of chilli and still too hot for kids (next time will leave out)
Cooked for 7 minutes

Rated 3.5/5 from my fussy lot.....though they did eat most of it :-\

I (finally!) made this tonight and it was nice.  But it burnt the bottom of my jug.  Just in one spot, but it covers about 1/4 of the bottom.  Anyone got any ideas why?  Hopefully the vinegar trick will get it off as scrubbing after a soak did nothing!

Hi Clare,
What speed did you cook on? This tends to happen whenever I use the  ^^ setting so I always use at least speed 1 or 1.5.

Hi Kerryn,

Sorry, I only just saw your message.  I would have cooked it on  ^^ as that's what the recipe says.  Will try speed 1 next time!  I thought I might try using the paddle (proper name escapes me!) as well to see if that will help move the meat around!

Again, enjoyed this dish

This time I used 870g chicken thigh strips (cooked for extra 2 mins. varoma temp.)
tripled the sauce ingredients (love lots of sauce)

Microwaved the 500g frozen Asian strifry veggies (love the Aldi one), and added them in for last 2 mins of chicken cooking.
It made a full thermoserve of teriyaki chicken, and I cooked the full 270g packet of soba noodles on the stove.
This helped stretch the meal out, and had some for left overs.

I have just made rhe meat component of this dish. I had defosted meat that needed to be cooked.

This seems like a good healthy dish.

I had beef strips precut from my butcher. Wondering if they were a little too long. They caught on the blade, I noticed after 4 mins, so unravelled then cooked for 1 minute more. They all look good now.

Not doing the noddles until we eat this dish, probably tomorrow evening. Thought I would toss some veggies in my wok, then add the beef.

The smell is great, never used mirin before so another new experience. Had a quick taste and OMG, yum, DH is going to love this, he loves anything with chillies.

H :)

I made this for dinner tonight. I used chicken thighs instead of beef and thai rice noodles instead of soba noodles. It is delicious. It's so quick to make and it has a really nice flavour. I added some steamed brocolli at the end for a bit of a vegie hit. It will definitely be a dish that we make often :)

I made the chicken version & enjoyed it.  Very quick & using everyday ingredients.  I'd serve it with rice though next time, as the soba noodles weren't popular in our house.  I'd add more vege too.

Ups my mistake, hi Cornish cream, halo everybody,  I just got my thermomix for 4 days to exiting searching recipe... We  are live in alkhobar KSA...not easy looking for "nice food" in here, I mean just different taste,  we just came 2 weeks ago....my son really want beef teriyaki...he is 8 yo...
