I got one for free last week when I bought my TM.  I got the regular cookbook and then My Way of Cooking with a note saying it was a gift for me.  Made me feel good.  I can buy it in Canada.  It looks like it comes from Germany.  It is $40.00 Can. funds here or maybe $45.00.

Money to be made but no-one is interested.  Can't understand it myself.  We do have lots of lovely recipes on here Thermomixer and they are being added to daily - can't keep up with all the things I want to do.

If they make the book too hard to get hold there will be people that will simply photocopying it and TMX will miss out on the money. I'm sure there are many people that disagree with the varoma demo (and refuse to have one) but still enjoy cooking recipes from the Full Steam Ahead book.  Sometimes this type of "conditional" selling backfires badly.

Got the newsletter with the "Have a demo and get or buy a book"  Oh well.....  Guess it is advertising - so might have to hold a demo.
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: riv_mum on February 02, 2010, 12:31:34 am
My guess is that is is only going to be a customer incentive for a month or two and then will be available for purchase at any time like the Varoma one is. You will just have to pay full price then, but in the mean time more incentive for customers to have demos! And since they cant purchase all the host benefits/rewards at once, they have to have more than one demo. I am not a huge fan of this "forced demo-ing".

Does anyone know anything about edition 1? Is this just a tweaked version or a whole new book?

Post by: Caroline J on February 02, 2010, 01:36:31 am
As I understand it, if you host a demo in Feb, you can buy one for $30.  I had a demo last night (coincidence) so I ordered one :D
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: Meagan on February 02, 2010, 02:09:18 am
Yes Caroline you are right - if you host a demo in Feb you can buy one for $30 and if someone at your demo purchases you get it for free. It is only a Feb promotion. But you are able to get it on top of any other host rewards. Ie if it was a varoma demo you would be able to buy the varoma book for $25 too.

Riv mum I thought you could only buy the full steam ahead book if you hosted a varoma demo??
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: marmee on February 02, 2010, 02:32:40 am
Oh wow!  So you can get the two books for half price - Varoma and this new one?  OK - time for my Varoma demo then!
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: riv_mum on February 02, 2010, 05:23:25 am
As consultants we can buy the Varoma cookbooks so therefore should be able to sell them to customers at full price if they dont want a demo. I guess it really depends on how you want to run your business. If you want more demos then its better for you to enforce the Varoma demo to get the book. I have customers who live hours away with no other consultant nearby so am not able to just do demos so that someone can get a book at half price, so am happy to sell them to customers at full price who want them but dont want demos. I didnt actually know that they weren't to be 'purchased'.

Wish you were my consultant Sheree  - the stormtroopers over here are adamant that it ONLY comes with a demo.

I used to get upset - but understand that it should be an incentive to help advertise.  Don't need it anyway  ;) perche io parlo italiano

...and of course there are too many recipes on here anyway.
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: riv_mum on February 02, 2010, 12:41:41 pm
lol ta,
Like I said, I haven't known any better or different so sorry if I'm mucking it up for you other consultants!
I just don't have the time or money to drive 200-300km (or sometimes more!) for a customer who is ONLY having a demo just to get the book and don't like making them feel obligated to have a demo just to get it. Its different if they have friends interested or want extra help or demos, but no point in wasting both of our time if its not necessary.
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: judydawn on February 02, 2010, 01:18:15 pm
You are one feisty lady who makes her own rules riv_mum and why not - you know what you are doing and I'm 100% behind you. How many would drive as far as you are expected to just to sell a book.  Don't Thermomix know they are competing with the forum for recipes and if they just sold all books outright they might sell a few more.
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: baf65 on February 02, 2010, 01:29:41 pm
i reckon the book is rubbish anyway!!! if I had held a demo to get one of those after already holding a demo I would have been quite p****t off!
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: Thermomixer on February 02, 2010, 10:40:35 pm
Can't be that bad ??? - well how does it compare with the Full Steam Ahead?

I have seen some recipes and they don't look that weird.

Guess the question of having it as an incentive (Gosh I have changed !!!) is fair - there needs to be some incentive for people to host demos.  I know that I had troubles organising people to see it in the demos i have held.  So something to encourage you is good.

Can't believe I have said that - but it is true.

How about some reviews Sundari, might give people an idea of what sort of recipes are in this book and could then encourage them to buy.
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: Chelsea (Thermie Groupie) on February 03, 2010, 12:40:21 am
I personally would prefer TMX to explore some different ways at marketing their product to new people rather than expecting TMX owners to keep having demo's.  If I had another demo I would be inviting the same people and my consultant (who is also my friend) would know that she would be doing it without the hope of a sale.  I understand that having a demo and getting the new book is optional, but it would be nice if owners were looked after a bit more and were able to purchase the book without a demo.

Sadly no new book for me.  :'(

Yeah that did come across a bit angry JD but not intended. Just a bit frustrated! I'm generally a happy, casual person who is very easy to get along with!  :D
I understand that the host incentives are there to try and reach more people by encouraging more demos and ultimately growing our personal businesses, but agree with Chelsea that it puts pressure on existing customers to keep having demos which is not fair for those who may not want to. And generally the same people come along which technically doesn't count.

It is also common place now that customers will pay using credit for books, extra bowls etc. As I cant process credit card payments I don't get any commission from these sales as it is processed by head office. This is also the same for customers who want to purchase extra items with their machine but cant/don't want to pay via cash or direct deposit to me for the extra items. Obviously the sale of a machine is better than selling books etc but it all adds up and doesn't really give much incentive to sell the books. (But in spite of the winging I love my TM so am happy to show it to people!)

On the other hand I like the look of the new book - it is nicely set out and has a variety of recipes. At a quick glance a number of the recipes sounded familiar and are possibly from other books or have been put on the thermomix blog. It would be nice if we could get some reviews of recipes happening though.
Title: Re: My Way of Cooking International Edition 2
Post by: Chelsea (Thermie Groupie) on February 03, 2010, 03:54:02 am
I wonder if we could get a list of the recipes from the new book happening - just so we know what we are talking about.  Perhaps people could volunteer to type up one section each to ease the burden?  I would volunteer but of course I don't have the book.  ;)  ;D

The contents are here http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2612.msg28462#msg28462 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2612.msg28462#msg28462)

I can understand the frustration - because I ranted more than most with the Full Steam Ahead book, and know what it's like dragging friends kicking and screaming - but it is basically because I don't have a big enough contact list with friends who would part with the money for another machine.

I've had 3 TM parties at my house, and I don't think that I could ask my friends to come to another. Should be able to buy the book on the open market, and maybe also have it as a Hostess Gift or on discount at a party.

Hi,
Have missed most of this conversation but I agree that customers are hungry for more cookbooks and they've already had their delivery demo and varoma demo don't want anymore, just want the cookbook.
Theres much more to be said on the topics mentioned below but I'll bite my tongue for now   :-X

I've seen the book and it is a very nice production.   I will be getting one as I'm having a demo.   However,  when I look at the list of contents, there is not a lot there that is not on the forum or easily converted.  I have the Indian book and have started  to use it.  I will post a critical report on it when I have tried a few more recipes.  The recipes that are successful,  from the Indian book,  i will post as I try them.   Most of the recipes that I have tried I have changed,  is it ok to post them?  For example I left the chilli out of the Chicken Korma,   and the Beef and mushroom curry, suggests finishing off in the oven,  and I cooked it in the TMX.

Post by: baf65 on February 06, 2010, 10:39:18 am
yes Meagan I was talking about the FUll steam ahead book, i havent seen this international book yet
I wouldnt have a demo tho as Ive had a demo, plus when I was a demonstrator I got friends to have demos for me, so couldnt really ask them along again to see the same things being made

What would be ideal is if they set up some advanced dishes that could be demonstrated at a 3rd or 4th demo so that the 'owner' would see some new stuff and if friends who had been to previous demos came along who were say 'on the fence' about buying one might just get pushed to purchase one, as after all that is why they want you to have more and more demos

But everyone knows about the sorbet, everyone knows about the dips, just gets repetitive

LOL JD!  I doubt I'll ever be offered such a course here... I'm apparently feisty and assertive enough already! ;)  I know I usually manage to get my point across if I have an issue and use different ways to reach a destination if need be.  :P

I'm in two minds about the International Book.  I know I *could* do another demo but right now it's not an option due to my workload and kids. *shrug*

Baf you are certainly right. I have a friend who is a consultant and she has done 3 or 4 demos for some people.  They ask her to come along and to make ???????. They often have different friends at the demo and she has sold several machines that way. She sort of does upmarket demos. She also does the usual ones for first timers etc too.

To riv_mum and others regarding the credit card problem. I think you can open a paypal account then you would be able to process payments wth a credit card. I use that for my business because I have only a few customers who want to use cc and it is not worth the bank fees to set up a merchant account. Have a look at www.paypal.com.au

I just gave them that name Chookie. They are ones where my friend does a demo for people who have had a TMX for some time and they would like some more ideas on using it. Sometimes she makes extra sales at these and other times she doesn't.
It's just something she does.

Pretty sure I've told you that before Thermomixer on another thread that ran high with emotions on the same subject. ;) With the 'Full Steam Ahead' we have to buy them ourselves so I absolutely no qualms about giving it away to friends or letting people buy it without a demo. But apparently with this new book they aren't allowing us to purchase for customer - well that's what my GL told me anyway. Whoops have I said too much ??? :-))

Not as far as I am concerned Nay-nay - I believe in free speech and H.O. would do well to gauge the market by reading some of the posts on here. I know consultants hold back for fear of upsetting H.O. but what are they going to do - send out a hit man ??? ???

I am sure you offered to sell me one ( may have been a PM) - but I was determined not to - wanting to change the world !!!   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anyway - I think that I have changed to the TM HO way of thinking.  Getting old - but think that there needs to be some incentive for the dreaded demos.

I didn't realise that as a consultant you were at liberty to purchase the Full Steam Ahead and NOT account for its disappearance.

OMG - Maybe you know more than me about it Thermomixer! Do you think I'll be disbanded? The thing is, it is the consultant that has to buy it and give it away not the company.

Yes, and nothing more disheartening when you "have to" buy up on books and then they stop moving for a while.

Thanks Nay-Nay, my GL hasn't said anything to me about the way that My Way of Cooking will be distributed. And I'm completely behind your comments below too.

The product is great, but the company needs to come up to date.  Just yesterday I held a Enjo Demo here and the rep was talking about their work load. She's a single mum with 2 kids and only took on Enjo because it's basically the demo time, place and deliver the orders without too much follow up time and commented how fantastic the comission was (I didn't ask specifics). For me, I've found the commission doesn't cover the amount of time spent on customer care etc.

I've written, deleted, re-written, deleted and re-written this so many times it's not funny just trying to bite my tongue.

No ladies you are simply saying what everyone thinks. It is a sad fact. Perhaps the company is doing so well they don't have time to follow up all the "little bits". A pity. Thank goodness for the forum.

Maybe it is up to us people ,who the company has no hold over, to kick up a stink.!!!!!

Anyway - I think that I have changed to the TM HO way of thinking.  Getting old - but think that there needs to be some incentive for the dreaded demos.

As mentioned previously, its hardly an incentive when the customer has to pay $30 plus postage! Most PP companies give the host a free gift of that value as a thank you regardless of sales!

And as consultants we are told to stick to the demo dishes and only them as they are proven. I have tried to do different dishes in demos, workshops etc for customers who were on their 3rd demo and got wrapped over the knuckles.
I think part of the problem is that customers actually want advanced cooking classes and not neccessarily extra demos. I have bought this up the higher powers in the past and the response was "Advanced cooking classes are not really our issue, we need to focus on sales and new customers. If they want advanced classes then let them set up their own cooking classes/clubs". (Not exact words but something very similar)
In my opinion, if they want to get existing customer to introduce the TM to new customers then maybe we need to keep them happy with something more than the basics which are currently offered.
I would personally like to see a variation to the demo dishes for those who have seen it several times. An instant icecream for desert is just as impressive as sorbet and something like Dukkah could substitue the dip. At demos such as these you usually have access to 2 machines - yours and the customers, so no reason why 2 main meals could not be prepared or a different desert than custard. There are so many simple recipes which highlight the versatitly of the TM out there.

And I do agree that the commission does not parallel with the amount of time, travel, follow up and customer service which we put in.

oh and thanks for the tip about credit card payments! At last I may actually be able to keep my commision.

Even for Christmas I wasn't allowed to run the full Christmas cooking class up here - just a modified B2B with a Christmas theme, which is disappointing. Even as a consultant trying to service the area I'm not even getting exposed to these advanced classes/techniques.

I have been following this thread with close attention. I am a real newbie (got my TMX 6 days ago) and have signed up to be a consultant. I will be asking questions during my training but from what I have learned so far I think there may be different methods used in different areas.
One comment I noted was postage charged on the cook book. My documentation says no postage and the reason given for half price for a demo with no sale is to stop customers simply having a demo with the same guests and no intention to buy. I think I agree with the company that I would  not like to keep doing demos for the same group just so they get a fee lunch and a free cook book.
Someone mentioned that these ladies really want an advanced cooking class and I think that is the answer. Who organises it is another question. There seems to be a few of those available around Perth so maybe we do not have the same problem others do.
Is it an idea for you to hold your own advanced class? As the business is yours I see no reason for you not to be able to do that and if that is what the customers want they may also be willing to pay a bit to cover costs. I think the ones in Perth are $15.
You might even get some demo bookings from it.
Any way I will continue to follow this and I hope when my training is completed I can make a go of my business as so many others do. I really appreciate all the info I see on this site.

The problem is you cant just hold and organise a cooking class. It has to be done by a GL and approved by head office and then recipes selected from the basic ones. As I understand it also, any money paid by customers on the night goes to head office who the reimburse the cost of ingredients. So in terms of financial gain - there is none for consultants but maybe if you are lucky a demo booking. Its A LOT of work and time for very little return. I dont know of any "advanced" cooking classes like the ones my customers are asking for. And when I have asked the response has been "no too much work and if they want them they can organise their own cooking clubs".
I'm sure it will become clearer for you once you finish your training and try to implement new ideas in your business.
All of us are in different situations with regard to how many other consultants and GL are near by, the support and contact we get and where our customers are based.
Even though some of us have highlighted a few issues which are the thoughts and words of others behind the scenes, Im sure it will be us who get reprimanded in the long run, if HO take a dislike to the voicing of opinions.

riv mum dont worry about it because im sure that HO dont even hardly bother coming on this forum, because if they did then surely they would work out that there are some disgruntled customers out there and that they need to make some changes to look after their 'advocates' instead of just worrying about their 'potentials'

Yep, they do keep an eye on here.

Regarding running your own demos without HO's approval, just be warned that apparently unless it's an official Cooking Class through HO you won't be covered by your public liability insurance.

With my experiences running classes, out of the door takings, I pay for food, other consultants food/costs etc. I can apply to HO to be re-imbursed for a max of $100 I think for the venue fee. IF there is any left over then you collect that as an income.

Hi all, very dissapointing that we can't just buy the book outright, seems very silly to me.

People on here keep mentioning that HO believes that if customers want advanced classes they should create their own clubs. Is there anything stopping a consultant from creating a cooking club and running advanced classes as sort of a separate thing to their TMX business? If I were a consultant I would look at doing this (I emailed HO about becoming a consultant but no one ever called me so I figured they aren't interested in me :( )

just thinking that considering I want the book and have already had 3 TM demo parties, I am going to have another one. However, I will invite people that I just know will not buy a TM like my mum, MIL and a friend. After the demo, no one will buy a machine and I will just buy the book. The consultant will be well aware from the beginning that I won't be buying another TM, passionate as I am about it, and will feel like she has wasted her time that she could have otherwise spent with her family. That hardly seems fair to her, but how else am I going to buy this book other than complying with the conditions  ???

I rang HO this morning and asked about buying My Way of Cooking.  And they said yes!

Should I not get excited, and wait until it gets here, hoping that they don't cancel it on me???
I'm getting bread mat, budget busters and a brush too.....so they had better not cancel it!

Hi Bartoncs,

I looked into just this too.  The thing is that unless you are running a Cooking Class that is overseen by HO using HO approved menu, format etc., then you will not be covered by the insurance that you take out through Thermomix in Australia.  A consultant would then need to get a second lot of insurance to be covered etc. etc. etc.... as no sales were likely to come out of one of these cooking classes (as the atenddees would be owners already) then a fairly large fee would need to be charged to cover time, food, venue (if applicable), materials etc. So I guess the next most favorable idea is these "cooking clubs" of friends to avoid the insurance issues and such.

Vey disappointing I agree, and being in a fairly regional area such as I am there are only so many times you can entice custoemrs to come along and see the similar format over and over again....

So just a heads up that the my way of cooking cook book is now in short supply worldwide and head office is not sure when they will be receiving more copies so if you really want one of these books then I suggest you speak to your consultant and get your hands on one before they are sold out  8)

I liked some of the recipe ideas but not at $60 and not with a demo (though same I would also like the Full steam ahead book and am waiting to work out a good group of maybe customers to do a varoma demo - though I don't want to spend the whole time washing up as has been said, lol) but I wouldn't just do a demo for the sake of it without friends who are actually interested, not for a cook book.
If they want to offer cookbooks as incentives then they should be offered for sale as well as incentive. That way the people that buy them should (if they are good!) recommend them and then those that are in the position to host a decent demo (I would not drag my consultant - not that I've heard from her, lol - all the way here for a no way sale demo) then they would host a demo to get the book for free or 1/2 price or whatever.

MWOC can now be purchased without a demo, just like the other books. It is only the FSA book that you need a demo for  ;)

My Way of Cooking update for those not receiving Thermomix newsletter.

It is at present freely available from your consultant to all customers for $60, and also available half price ($30) as co-payment for a Varoma demo with no sales or FREE for someone who purchases a Thermomix in August 2011.

If you want to have a look through it first (it is a very beautiful and impressive book) come along to a cooking class or contact your consultant.
