A friend asked me today if I knew a butcher that did msg free sausages. I don't, but thought this wonderful forum could provide an answer for her. Anyone out there buying msg free sausages?
-
I was given a sausage kit for my birthday and have made some that were MSG free. I have never thought to ask my butcher if his are MSG free. I will have to do so as they are nice.

Interesting, Cookie. Have not heard of sausage kits before, so I turned to Mr Google. It's selling at $80 on Everten.
Is it very fiddly to make sausages, Cookie? I don't like buying them as they are sooo bad on so many levels, but my boys love them.

BZB, I have made sausages many times and it is a fun, messy job. You need to put a full 1/2 day aside. Good also to have some help and to make a lot. My Kenwood has a mince and sausage attachment. This is why I still have it.
I buy preservative free sausages from a local butcher. They are frozen as they don't keep.
I have never heard of MSG in sausages. But as a flavour enhancer can accept that this might be the case.

Are the casings easy to get, Chookie? Casings not made from piggy parts, that is.
-
I hadn't heard of MSG in sausages but I guess they could put anything in...
That said I would trust the sausages from Mondo's in Inglewood. His meat is fantastic quality and I would be shocked if there were any artificial flavour enhancers or fillers at all.

I think most butchers that make their own sausages wouldn't use MSG. The ones I get from Frank's in Fremantle don't. I have made my own sausages - messy fun. Like Chookie I have the mincer/sausage attachment on my kenwood which makes it easier. I buy casings from a local butcher.

There are 2 types of casings, pig and artificial. Don't know what they are made from but I prefer the pig.

Thanks everyone. I will pass on your comments. I did suggest to her that she make her own.

You can buy casings from Master Butchers or MBL in Canning Vale. WA.
