UK Condensed Milk
« on: October 22, 2011, 02:41:10 am »
Does anyone know if the condensed milk in the UK is the same as our Aussie Sweetened Condensed Milk?  And also what size is a can? It is listed as an ingredient in The British Larder recipe for Lemon Curd Tarts and just says one can of condensed milk. There is no sugar in the recipe so I think it might be the same but just want to make sure. Also not sure of the can size.

I am pretty sure they are the same thing, but can't help you with the size of cans.  One of our English girls will surely be able to tell you later on today or overnight tonight once they start coming on line for the day.

I just had a thought, perhaps you could get onto a web site for Sainsburys or Tescos and check their condensed milk range and you may get an answer to the tin size question that way.

Thanks for that - very good idea about checking the supermarkets. Will do that now.

Have just had a look at Tesco's and it looks like it is sweetened condensed milk. One can says just condensed milk but shows a picture of what looks like caramel slice on it and some of the other cans say sweetened, so thanks Cuildih. Would never have thought to check.

Thanks CP63, I have seen that thread before but am a little nervous of attempting it myself. It sounds like too much could go wrong and I am a bit of a chicken.

I have made the condensed milk before and it is so easy. Give it a go for an experiment, and if it works make something scrummy from it  :)

Do you use the one with milk powder or the one with just milk & sugar?

Does the recipe you use make enough for a whole tin or do you double the amounts?
