Title: Excited new owner
Post by: wombat on April 15, 2011, 10:58:06 pm
Hi, my name is Janet and I have had my new thermomix for about 3 weeks and my only complaint is that I am spending my whole day cooking and washing and rewashing my thermomix ;D

I am still getting used to the whole converting thing and have my varoma demo in about two weeks so I will hopefully just improve and improve.

Just a quick question...with varoma steamed veges....Normally in my own saucepan I would put either carrots or pumpkin on the bottom so I can mash them and then in the steamer on top I would add broccoli, beans, zuchinni etc.  How can I convert this to my thermo? I do not want boiled out carrots in the bowl and I do not want to pick carrots out from the top after cooking......any ideas? ???

I haven't yet used the varoma much but I did cook celery, parsnips and carrots in the inner basket while steaming fingerling potatoes and some potstickers in the varoma.  Everything came out okay.  I had the stuff in the basket cooking for two or three minutes before I set the varoma basket on top.

Hi wombat, welcome to the forum. Lovely to see you are enjoying your TMX.  As far as cooking veg is concerned, if you put about 750mls of water in the bowl, the basket with your carrots and pumpkin (or potatoes) will not be sitting in water but will be steamed. It is then easy to remove the basket for mashing, either by hand or by tipping out the water, placing the butterfly in place, adding the potatoes or whatever you want to mash, add milk, butter, S & P and mix on speed 4, no higher or the butterfly may disintegrate for up to 10 seconds.

Hi and welcome Wombat. I agree with JD. I put harder veg in the steamer/rice basket that sits inside the jug. Easy to tip out the water and quickly mash at the end. Glad to see you are pleased with your TMX and getting lots of use from it.

Hi & welcome wombat.  Sounds like JD's idea is on the money.  May need to steam a bit longer than you may be used to but play around & have fun  :-* :-* :-* :-*

welcome wombat....glad your enjoying your thermomix

re the vegies follow JDs advice for the basket and you could line the bottom varoma tray with wettened? baking paper (run under water then rung out and line the tray) with other vegies you dont want to mash..i find it with things like brocoli its easy to clean up with the baking paper but you could also just place them in the tray like that and the vegies you wish to mash all in the basket.. just be careful with the length of time you cook them ie follow another recipe as if you cook it too long the water, stock or other liquid can evaporate into nothing..its happened to me with a sauce whilst cooking something else lol
