Lovely photo rainbow - makes me want to go to Australia even more.   Roll on OH's retirement  ;) ;)

Well my friend never made it to lunch as it's really icy out there.  I'm getting a bit stir-crazy but hope the snow will get a lot clearer over the next few days.  I've seen some photos from the party I missed on Saturday and it looked amazing.  I HATE SNOW  :D :D :D

I made this bread today as I'm having a visitor for lunch tomorrow and thought I'd serve it with tomato and red pepper soup.

I read JD's and VieveMS's reviews and, as a result, decided to leave the MC off when I was cooking the leeks and onions so that some moisture would evaporate.  I added a little bit more flour to the mix but not a lot.   The dough was quite moist but it stuck together well.

I cooked it for 30 minutes but probably at a higher temperature than 200 because I was using the Aga.  I've only eaten the crust but it seems to be cooked ok and it tastes wonderful.   It is quite a strong taste so I think you need to serve it with strong flavours else what you served  it with could get drowned by the bread.   Definitely 5/5 from me

I think the potatoes and carrots are for the sauce jakodai as the recipe talks about adding potatoes or rice into the basket later on.

Good luck with the recipe and let us know how it goes

Hally - you must be much more tolerant than me.  I would have made my dissatisfaction clear to them by now and they sure would have noticed I wasn't happy.   Grumpy me isn't a good thing to be around  ;D

Well we didn't make it to the party which is a shame as, judging by the pics on Facebook, it seems to have been fun.   We measured the snow yesterday and it was 9 inches deep.   Sheffield is a very hilly city and we are quite high up - I think it was much less down in the centre.

No more snow forecast for the next few days but we need some warmer weather to get rid of it.  They are still talking about a white Easter  :o :o

I think you can steam at lower speeds but you definitely need Varoma temperature which I think would be too hot for the risotto.

The UK Fast & Easy cookbook doesn't use the butterfly for making risotto and so I've never done so and the risotto turns out fine.  I usually cook mine at about speed 3 as it stops it sticking,.

Thanks everyone for your good wishes.   It's good that we can just stay indoors and hunker down.

Poor cat though - she hates the snow and looks accusingly at me as if it's my fault.  You can see her pawprints in the picture where she went outside but she didn't stay out for long  :D :D

I don't think I'll be doing much today.... luckily we have enough food in the house to keep us going for a while but unluckily we were meant to be going to a friend's 50th birthday tonight.   Somehow I don't think we'll make it if the snow keeps going

I always use chicken thigh meat rather than bone-in thighs when I use this paste JD - works fine.  I don't put it on the BBQ but just fry it in a hottish frying pan.   I add the yoghurt marinade to the pan at the end to make a sort of sauce.

Good to see you again joolsmicra ... Have you tried cooking your porridge at speed 3 and then filling the jug with water immediately after you've served up the porridge?  It works a treat for me  ;)

Yum JD - looks wonderful and thanks for posting.

One question - when Hugh FW says it keeps in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, is that in its cooked or uncooked state?

Soups / Re: Chicken and Spinach Soup (with photo)
« on: March 16, 2013, 02:48:25 pm »
I made this for lunch today and it was a great success.  OH said he preferred it to "ordinary chicken soup" and said he could taste the almonds in it.

I hadn't remembered that farfallina had put some parsley leaves on the top when she served it - I wish I had because it looks so nice that way.

It has quite a "tart" taste so some might prefer not to add the lemon juice, but I liked it with the lemon juice.   I didn't realise that I had only got 250 g spinach so I used less chicken and less stock.   I also felt the oil wasn't that well infused with the garlic so I cooked the garlic in the oil for an additional 2 minutes at Varoma.   (Not sure if that made any difference to the final taste  :D)

Welcome to all the UK members - I'm another one and hail from Sheffield.  I've had my machine for about 3.5 years now and I can't imagine life without it.   It has really reignited my enthusiasm for cooking.  I just wish it was better known over here.

I've bought all the ingredients for this and will be making it on Saturday.  I'll report back  ;)

Thanks for your reviews Gillian - it's really interesting that I've not done one of the things that you have posted reviews for so there's lots of stuff from the book now on my "To Do" list.

I find this a really easy recipe too and I've learned the importance of making sure the potatoes are well cooked else the texture is a bit gloopy.

I use various different things - sometimes olive oil and water in place of butter & milk, sometimes horseradish, sometimes add spring onions.  It all depends what I am serving the potatoes with.
