Chit Chat / Re: Household hints & tips to save money
« on: May 12, 2015, 01:48:24 am »
I agree with Cuilidh, recently we cleared our finance on the car, and it has reduced the insurance by some 50/100$, hubby was surprised as we did not make that change on the second car on which we cleared the finance an year ago.. As soon as we realized, did the same on the second car as well, and saved few more $ :)

They don't mention this anywhere clearly though... probably a  strategy of insurance companies..

Condensed milk is a great idea, I actually have a dessert recipe which my mom makes which uses condensed milk.. I have always had store bought condensed milk and never tried one at home, thanks to you guys and TMX, probably one more item cut down from the shopping list ;)

Lovely post Chrissa as I can see myself putting up a lot of questions here ;)

I have got a kg packet of milk powder which is about to expire and not able to decide what to do with it,
I know the best would be some dessert but not able to make up my mind, any ideas and probably something which is toddler friendly? :)

Okay, not sure if this tip has been suggested by anyone on this thread, apologies as I havent read each one of them, but wanted to share this..

As me and hubby are trying to cut down on many of our expenses, we put our dishwasher and washing machine between 10pm-7am, but since we cannot always stay late/wake up early to switch on/off, hubby has bough these timer plugs online on ebay (cost just a couple of bucks)

You can set the timer to start and stop at a particular time, and this is not the timer on the machine but rather the plug point which is nice and reduces the power consumption..

And also, he has bought remote controlled plugs which can be switched off all at once at night instead of going to each plug point to switch it off..

We have observed a lot of difference in our power bills as well :)

Woww, loving the tips here, especially CP's idea of taking photograph of receipts...
I always misplace receipts and regret later...

Recently after buying thermi, hubby and I have started saving a lot of money by not eating out but having a fancy dinner prepared at home in thermi.. No more store bought soup, no more pizza take away, no more store bought bread and biscuits.. Its surprising as how much you save when you spend on the ingredients rather than the ready made stuff...

Need to read through all the tips though, love this forum even more now :)

Thank you so much Chookie, I will give that a go with reduced time.. But would surely want to thank you for the recipe as it
has made me stop having store bought :)

Sorry to be a pain, but one more question, since I am using a lid, not sure if there is a way I can stop the bread from sticking to it...
I have used the lid while proofing for the second time, so that I can get a flat top...
Any ideas?

CreamPuff, I bought the sandwich loaf tin you suggested and OMG, its beautiful, expensive but feel it is gonna be worth it as I wasted money on few
not so good loaf tins.. And I am sure with winter fast approaching, I will be making a lot of soup and bread ;)

But would like to work out how to make the perfect loaf in it..
Can someone suggest me the right temperature and time to use for the below measurements of loaf :

I used 676g baker's flour
3 tsp dried yeast
390ml warm water
salt n sugar

Basically I just used the plain no fuss rolls recipe and multiplied with 1.3 to use in the new loaf tin I bought..

I made one yesterday with these measurements, it went all good but only that it broke into half on one side :(
I put it initially at 210 deg for 45 mins and then extended for another 20 mins...

Thanks Karen for the recipe...

Just one question, any ideas on a homemade sauce I can serve it with, she had it plain but would like to make it more appealing for her..

This recipe sounds interesting, I have made savory muffins before, but the look of your muffins BZB is tempting me to give this a go for dinner.. My DD has all of a sudden become fussy and not eating any vegetables, probably this will be a good way to sneak some into her meal..

Starters and Snacks / Re: Mrs Mason's Nuts and Bolts

Made this yesterday with a packet of vegetable soup and curry powder (as I didnt hv french onion and also as I am a vegetarian, so cannot use chicken).. but it was yummy.
One silly thing  I did even after reading all the reviews, I forgot to use Chookie's method of putting the powders in the oil first, it wasnt consistent but tasted yumm, and even got it as a snack at work :)

I am afraid, I will be buying nutrigrain for myself rather than my kid now ;)
