Title: How to Add URL's
Post by: meganjane on February 24, 2010, 03:10:20 am
Not sure where this should go, so I put it in this section, since most people come here.

When adding a link to a website, which is known as a  URL, rather than just copying and pasting the whole URL, there's a way to include it as a short hyperlink. Normally the hyperlink code is (I've added a + so that it won't become a hyperlink!)

[+url]http://www.blahblahblah etc[/+url]  The code goes in brackets. To finish the hyperlink, the / sign is used in the bracket.

So, to just use one or two words instead of the whole URL, this is the way to do it. Remember, take the + sign out!

[+url=http://www.blahblahblah]The Website Name[+/url]

The URL goes in the first bracket with an = sign.

Get it? Or is it a clear as mud..... ???

I'm not sure I understand.
If I have yo type in the brackets as well as the url isn't copy/paste quicker.
Or am I being obtuse? ???

Generally, the name you have to type is only short, so shouldn't take too long! What it does do is make the post look tidier.

You can copy and paste.  OK, how I do it.

Type The Website Name or HERE: or whatever,

Then highlight it,

Go to the webite and copy the URL from the Address bar,

Back to the Forum page and click on the (http://www.forumthermomix.com/Themes/bimby/images/bbc/url.gif) symbol

then place the cursor between the letter l of the first bracket and the ]

Type = and hit then Ctrl-V (or whatever way you Paste) and it should be like MJ says

NOW you are confused !!!!!!!!

this is really easy to do, and maybe these instructions could work for you:

1. Bring up the webpage you wish to draw attention to.
2. Way up above (where the address shows http:/forumthermomix.com/index...etc is at the very top of your computer screen on the toolbar) - just copy and paste that whole address and note the name of the topic eg. Thai Sweet Potato & Lentil Soup
3. In the topic where you are going to post, type in Thai Sweet Potato & Lentil Soup
4. Now highlight with your mouse, Thai Sweet Potato & Lentil Soup
5. Just above the smiley faces, click on the Globe of the Earth symbol (3rd one from the left)
6. Just in front of the first word that you have just highlighted (eg. Thai) you will see (url)
7. In between the l and the ] type in an equal sign
8. Between the equal sign and the square bracket, copy and paste the webpage (from Step 2)
9. It basically looks like this in the section where you type, but without the spaces and underline : ( url= http://www. forumthermomix. com/index.php?topic=3711.0 ]Thai Sweet Potato & Lentil Soup (url)
10. When you click "Preview" it will look like this Thai Sweet Potato & Lentil Soup (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=3711.0)  :o

(*NB: in most instances I have replaced a square bracket with a normal curved bracket, as the computer recognised this as a function key and did weird things. If your screen shows a square bracket, thats normal. Sometimes I also have a couple of forum web pages open as it makes flicking backwards and forwards easy, but don't worry about that until you have the hang of hyperlinking)

Thai Sweet Potato & Lentil Soup (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=3711.0)

Thanks CP63, gave it another go and surprise, surprise it worked.  All seemed too hard when MJ first posted it.  :-*

So instead of typing the name of the dish, you can type the word Here like MJ does?

That's much clearer, CP63. I do it that way too now.

Another trick is to use keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste. Once you've highlighted the URL you want to copy, hold down Ctrl and click C to copy, then hold down Ctrl and V to paste.  If you have a Mac, use Command +C or V.

If you're printing anything, Ctrl P is the keyboard shortcut.

Thank you all - I have spent an unbelievable amount of time attempting to post in the tidy fashion as demonstrated by CP and others.  I use hyperlinks in word documents for students all the time but could not get my head around how to insert the hyperlink into a title on the forum. (I was hoping that no one would happen to click on some of my crazy replies in the practising before I deleted them.  While the practicing was occurring in the wee hours in OZ , there could have been a chance some forum friends may have stumbled upon my lunacy and be witness to my attempts at learning what you have all just taught me.  Cheers and thank you CP for the clarity of your instruction.   :)  :)  :D  :D

I now will try - Red Thai Chicken Curry (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5852.0)

You are a legend CP - thank you!!!! I have saved the instructions in your thread as a word document on the desktop - for those senior moments!!!!!

Good one Johnro  ;D ;D Don't you just love the way we get computer lessons on this forum. I must surprise my kids one day and send them a 'here' link - I'm sure they wouldn't know how to do it themselves  ;D ;D

Thanks for the instructions CP63.I've stuck them to the wall in front of my desk for easy referral and will have a go when the forum is quiet (2am sounds good!) If anyone is on and sees me post/delete/post/delete please just ignore me.

Add a Photo
While I am at it... :D I am going to assume you know how to download photo’s off your camera, and the file/folder that you have saved it in is called Thermomix, and then you will name your photo so you can identify it. In this instance, my photo is called Brazens Bagel

1.   Right click on photo you wish to download to the forum
2.   Select Edit
3.   Click “Compress Pictures”, and then select “Compress for – Web pages
4.   Click OK and Save
5.   Now back to the TM post where you have been typing…just under the text box you will see written in bold Additional Options…Click
6.   See Attach, click on Browse – and browse your eg. Thermomix file and double click on eg Brazens Bagel
7.   If you have another photo, just next to the Browse button on the right hand side click on (more attachments)
8.   Click Preview if you wish to review your text (no photo will come up tho) before selecting Post

Note: Some computers may be different, I use a PC, and others may add photo's differently but I hope this can be of assistance to someone as we all enjoy seeing photo’s. You can't just download a photo straight off your camera as the size needs to be made smaller for web pages so you don’t have to wait an eternity for it to appear on the web page. Easy peasy  :D

VHJ your post really made me smile - a referral to my craziness is mentioned in an above post. So many times, in trying to get it right, I tried the hyperlink title using any post from the forum (generally when the majority of OZ forum members would have been safely tucked in bed!!!!!!!!)  :D  :D  :D

I did manage to get it right once but I have left the instructions taped up in where I can see them as I know I will have to refer to them again.  ;)

Believe me girls, it doesn't take long to get it off pat.  I think 3 or 4 times for me but as I use it a lot, guess it stays in my memory bank easier.  If I didn't use it much, it would be like learning all over again every time I'm sure. My first thoughts were that it takes so much longer than the 'old way' but that is not true once you come to grips with it.  I can't wait to send something to either DD using it and see their reaction  :D :D

BTC, this is what Chelsea posted on the forum a while back and should help you to reduce the size of the photo and post it on the forum.

'think there is probably a very easy way, but this is what I do.

I open the folder where the photo is currently saved (can even be your camera folder).
I right click on the photo and a menu appears.
I click on the "open with" option.
I then click on the "paint" option and it will open in the paint program (don't worry if it is huge).
I then click on the "image" menu at the top.
I click on the stretch and skew option in the image menu.
In stretch and skew I change the stretch settings to 25% and 25% (and leave the other settings).
I then click on the file menu and click on the "save as" option.
I type a new name for my smaller sized photo.
I find the folder where I want to save my resized photo in the drop down menu (I use "my pictures" folder)
I click on save and then close the paint program.
The smaller sized photo will be saved in the folder I selected and will open in almost every application (not just paint).

It sounds complicated but that's just because I have put in all of the steps (I hope). Hope this helps.'

Once you've reduced the size it is just a matter of clicking on 'Additional Options' after you have posted something that you want to attach a photo to. When you click on browse it should take you to where your photos are and you just go from there.  It is very hard to describe what to do, I just do it now but it took lots of advice before I was able to. If tyou don't understand this, perhaps someone else will explain it better than me  :-)) :-))

OMG, that was quick - I hope you haven't been sitting by the computer waiting for a reply. I've not been in long and of course headed straight for the forum.  CP & Chelsea did all the hard yakka getting their message across, I still find it hard explaining to anyone else how to do it. Jan and Cookie if those across the other side of the world aren't watching the comedy show you can probably depend on someone form Qld.  VHJ we have had a similar conversation previously when I was practising the whole hyperlink addition for the forum - always when the remainder of OZ should have been in the land of nod (believe me many would have had a huge laugh at what was posted in the weirdest threads in my learning!!!!!!!)
