Name of Recipe:Goulash Soup converted from an old Womans Weekly cookbook.
Number of People:6 serves
Ingredients:
25g butter or margarine
10g oil
2 large onions, quartered
2 large carrots, cut into large pieces
3 sticks celery, cut into chunks
400-500g pork forequarter chop - remove meat from bone and cut into large chunks
125 g bacon, cut into 2cm pieces
2 tablespoons sweet paprika
1/2 cup plain flour (80 grams)
l litre beef stock
2 chicken stock cubes
1/4 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
1/3 cup tomato paste (90 grams)
3 tablespoons chopped parsley
cream to serve (optional)
Chop vegies for 3 seconds/speed 5. Add butter and oil and saute 9 minutes/100o/speed 2. Add meat and bacon and cook 3 minutes/100o/reverse/speed 1-2. Add flour and paprika and cook 1 minute/100o/reverse/speed 2. Add the stock cubes, caraway seeds, tomato paste and as much of the 1 litre of stock as you can without going over the maximum fill mark of the bowl (add the rest later when it has evaporated ). Cook 40 minutes 100o/reverse/ speed 1. You may need to start off on speed 2 or 3 here then turn it down to speed 1 once the food is moving freely.
At this stage add the remainder of the stock then you can either blitz the whole dish for 10 seconds, gradually turning the dial to speed 9 ** and holding the MC in place during this process or you can remove the bigger chunks of pork (which will have floated to the top once the machine is turned off), cut up finely and return them to the dish AFTER the blitzing stage which is what I do, along with the chopped parsley.
** no longer advised to do this
Tips/Hints:
Serve with a swirl of cream for dinner parties (optional)

Faffa - This is a real hit with my family. Thanks JD. It is so hearty you would only serve the smallest amount if you served it before a meal. A real cheap main meal for us.
-
This sound really yummy and filling JD. I am so lucky that all my kids will eat soup so this one is earmarked!
-
Thanks JD! I cant wait to make this, just one question, with the paprika, in Spain we have a sweet one and a spicy one, which one is it? ???
-
Sweet paprika Bron.
-
Beware bron - the recipe would be using sweet Hungarian style paprika - the Spanish smoked pimenton would be a bit strong and doesn't seem to like being cooked for long periods like the Hungarian style. Might pay to add small amounts of the Dulce near the end and taste as you go.

This is a real hit with my family. Thanks JD :-* have made it a couple of times now :)
-
Thanks Kathryn, it certainly makes enough to feed a big family like yours.
-
LOL with fresh bread rolls they were full!!!! ;D ;D It is so hearty you would only serve the smallest amount if you served it before a meal. A real cheap main meal for us ;)
-
Thanks Thermomixer will add it at the end! ;) ;)
-
Nada - hasta pronto.

I made this one again tonight so can now add a photo. It is minus the parsley because I don't go out to the garden at night!
This is my favourite soup recipe of all time.
-
On that recommendation alone I will give this a try. Last night I made the Hungarian Goulash from MWOC and we weren't impressed at all, but I have a feeling this soup will be nice. Lovely bowl again Judy, thanks for bumping up this recipe. :)
-
That soup looks gorgeous and so appetising - pity I'm a vegetarian!!
-
does look lovely JD and I will make this week. probably should put your pic with the recipe too ;)
-
Yes, good idea CP - now why didn't I think of that :-))
I know I have one fan of this soup on the forum (Hi Kathryn :-*) so will be interested to see if anyone else enjoys it like we do.
There's a lot going on in the TM bowl so just make sure the contents are moving - I had no problems with it sticking, the bowl was just as easy to clean as with any other soup.
Marina, don't know how it would taste without the bacon, pork and beef stock but maybe you could try it with vegie stock and a handful of mushrooms.
-
Judy, it might be worth a try, but the taste combination of the various meats is so distinctive I don't think there would be a successful vegetarian option. I will print the recipe off and note your suggestions though (I think Swiss Browns would be the best option), then give it a try sometime and see how it goes. There are vegetarian bacon bits available in the supermarkets so perhaps a sprinkle of them on top will give it a boost as well. Thanks for the follow up.

Yep still a firm favourite in this house and while Mum was recuperating as well it was great for her, still a liquid but so hearty
-
Gosh I haven't tried this one and it looks lovely. On the menu this week, thanks Judy.
-
Made this tonight for tea. Beautiful, :) I didn't need to blitz the veg they had broken down nicely, and I just took the meat out and cut it up a bit more. I also added a small amount of macaroni.
-
I haven't made this one for ages, it was always Geoff's favourite soup - it's a meal in a bowl really. I'm glad you enjoyed it PP.
-
Thanks Katie for pointing out in this old recipe that I needed to change 'holding down the MC' during blitzing of this soup. As we all know, this is not recommended these days by HO. I've made the change so please make changes to your recipe if you've already printed it out.

Richard has gone to the Crows Port game today (& I know he was having a a big lunch) so I made this for a light dinner tonight. As I didn't really have lunch today, I've already had my soup and he'll have his when he gets home.
I loved it. It's delicious! Thanks for a great recipe Judy.

Thanks Katie, it's my favourite.
