Just made the healthy 'roast' chicken.  Firstly using the lemon zest in a paste with the parsley as a rub makes the kitchen smell wonderful. As I have lots of herbs growing at the moment I used all of the ones stated  in the recipe and the final result was brilliant. I love a good roast chook as much as the next person  but to cook chicken this way, the meat was moist and well flavored. My kids loved it  as well, even without the skin on. Great all in one meal to add to the repertoire. I give it a 5/5 - additionally, it feels a lot healthier to eat and less guilty than a roast chicken ( lets face it, I'm a roast chook skin addict but I am changing my ways!)

Great to read your review, Merlin.  I haven't tasted this dish, but I've watched Fiona cook it at a masterclass, and can absolutely agree with you about the lovely smell.  If you happened to take a photo, you might like to add it to the "From the kitchen of ..." album on the Devil of a Cookbook Facebook page.

You can make links to my recipes if you like JD.  The one-pot rice and beef is my swiss beef from the forum and my easy apple teacake is the one from here also. :)

Sorry all- my kids were so hungry tonight for dinner I didn't take a photo but to have all the vegies and stock as well at the end was great. I also agree that the book looks really good  and I have already bookmarked many of the recipes to make in the next few weeks.

I'm just about to make the sponge cake, and I thought there was a review? Oh well, I'll make one soon.

Not going to do a review, I didn't check the oven temp beforehand and it was too high and was starting to burn. I separated mix into 2 cake tins and they did not rise at all. Not fair to review it if I stuffed something up, so possibly will try again another time. REally disappointed with myself.

CP, I also thought I had read something about that sponge cake and eventually found this slight reference here (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=9538.30) by Kylie on the 16th May.

"The pictures of Tassie are nice. I wish there were more pics of the recipes in the book though! (yes yes apparently I am a food porn addict!).

There are lots of recipes in here that I intend to try. We made the 'light as air' sponge cake last night - gluten free as per the recipe for those who are interested - and it's really good. Must write a shopping list today for everything else we want to make on the weekend!"

Is this worth trying to get overseas? I have ordered other books (FFS and in the mix) and it is expensive to get them so don't want to order it if only so so. Hate to give more money to Australian post than the poor little Tasmanian devils!

Bickie, it's a beautiful book and way lighter than In the Mix.  I suspect lighter than For Food's Sake as well (though comparable) as FFS is hardback, whereas DOC is high quality paperback (also Landscape layout) with dustjacket.

I made the 1,2,3,4 pancakes for the kids after school today using gluten free plain flour.  Very quick and the kids devoured the entire lot. My kids prefer large flat pancakes so this amount of batter only made about 4 large pancakes but even so is an easy recipe to remember and even though it is a simple one it seems to be a versatile 'keep handy' one for starving kids after school. I think I'll make another batch for lunch boxes as well as a good standby for weekend breakfasts.  I also thought that they can be used as savoury pancakes/crepes as there is no sugar in the batter, only a pinch of salt - I guess if you wanted sweet pancakes just add some sugar but I prefer to avoid it in the batter as my kids enjoy their pancakes with some sugar and a squeeze of lemon on top anyway.

Just a really quick question.  Off to Tassie this week and love the look of this book.  Does anyone know where I might be able to buy in Tassie or do I have to order it on line?

Thanks

I made the 'devil may care' scones on page 107 but this recipe hasn't been listed in the original post. The recipe made about a dozen. I can't eat them myself but I made them to take to friends for afternoon tea and everyone agreed that they were lovely. (they are good friends of ours so I know they would tell me the honest truth if they didn't like them). The scones were fluffy enough and either plain or with jam and cream, they all were eaten. Overall, good recipe and very quick.

My copy arrived today...very happy with my purchase.
Majority of the recipes I actually want to make  :)  it's an honest cookbook, not pretentious like many  ;)
There isn't too many recipe pictures, but for some reason it didn't bother me with this book.

Oh dear  :-\  are the amendments on the Facebook page, or would you be able to copy and paste them here Thermo Mrs?
.....proof reading and testing is a vital element to producing a cook book I would have thought.....that's a lot of boo-boos  :o

This is disappointing!! You would have thought, given the importance of this book, they would have dedicated more care to the essential proofreading, etc.

Thermo Mrs - would it be appropriate for you to copy and paste the relevant parts of your consultant's email here??

What a blow to those lovely people whose recipes have been given the thumbs down because of this . . . . .  ???

As far as I can see there has been nothing mentioned on the FB page. I'm really disappointed that I now have to handwrite so many amendments throughout my lovely new recipe book. Here is the email I received, please don't forget that there is also an amendment for the gluten free double choc muffins separate to this email:

...our sincere apologies—a few gremlins got into the typing in the production of the Devil of a Cookbook and as a result we have produced these changes to the following recipes:

1. Peanut Satay Sauce—P 37 Use 250g peanut butter

2. Fee’s Quince Paste—P42 Push the mixture through a sieve after cooking the quince (to remove core pieces) then add sugar and continue cooking until a drop sets when dropped in cold water

3.  Mick’s Ciabatta—P 98 Double the poolish quantity and add 100g extra water to the 300g used in the recipe to create a really sticky dough

4.  Chocolate Brownies—P 133 Use 170g dark chocolate buttons, 60g cocoa powder, 110g plain flour etc and begin by grating the chocolate for 10 secs on speed 8 and setting aside.

5.  Gluten Free Chocolate Muffins—P135 Add 130g caster sugar to the dry ingredients

6.  Martha’s Melting Moments—P143 Decrease sugar to 80g and increase butter to 250g

NB: Where recipes ask for ‘bunches’ use a tiny little hand picked bunch or add to your taste.

We hope you enjoy this book and enjoy adding your own twists to the recipes to make them your own!

I've just checked a few of the amendments against the recipes in the book and wow, some of them are now quite different to the originals. It's not just typos with quantities, there are substantial changes with added ingredients and new methods to be included. I wonder if they even tested all of the recipes before publishing?

Probably too late for that Amy unless you ordered it through your consultant who may be able to cancel it for you.
I like the idea of a recall but I can't see that happening - there would end up being no money to save the Tasmanian Devil at all.
Shame I say and such an embarrassment to those concerned.

Amy, I copied and pasted Thermo Mrs' post into word, printed it out and stuck it in front of the book . . . continuing to make all those changes by hand didn't quite appeal  >:(

Apart from all this, I think the book worth having - at least for the cause it represents (if it didn't I probably wouldn't have bothered knowing all the mistakes there were in it) and there are some nice recipes in there.  Maybe we could try those recipes that have received the thumbs down and then review them again . . .maybe those moments will actually melt this time! ;)

:D Goldfish. I think I am scared off melting moments forever! That batch I made the other week were seriously a disaster and it's no wonder considering that there should have been only 80g of sugar instead of 180g and there should have been 250g of butter instead of 180g. If this book wasn't for such a good cause I would almost want to return it for a refund! There are some nice recipes but it's certainly disappointing that there are so many errors.

Puts a whole new slant on the saying  "The Devil is in the detail"  doesn't it . . . ;D

(When people say that the devil in the detail, they mean that small things in plans and schemes that are often overlooked can cause serious problems later on.)

Amy, how about if we just think of the little critters the funds are going to . . .  Look on the book as a Collectors Item with all its idiosyncracies for future generations and enjoy the recipes you discover in there . . .  ;)

It would be nice if both the tmx facebook page and the Devil of a Cookbook FB page acknowledged that there were some errors before the "official" amendments are released.

I don't like to waste ingredients (I'm sure nobody does!) and I feel that paying $40 for a cookbook should mean that it is thoroughly proofread and tested. It is a very worthy cause and I am pleased that my money has gone to the devils. Ofcourse nothing is perfect but lets be honest, this book has only been out 4-6 weeks and there are already 7 amendments (that I know of).

I won't be removing my post containing the amendments like I have been requested to. It wasn't my intention to be negative, I was simply reposting an email that I received directly from my consultant containing a list of amendments to some recipes in a book. "You are  in good company. There is no reason at all why these amendments should not be published immediately they were discovered. Disgraceful to let people waste their time and money as you say.  You have to ask yourself why HO would tell the consultants and not their customers. The answer is pretty clear"

Totally agree with you Gert. If people wanted to donate they may just as well donate cash rather than have a cookbook with unreliable recipes...it is unforgivable that the draft has not been proof read by the publisher.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon with ThermoMrs, Gert and courton. I paid for a book with reliable recipes, so thats what I expect. Someone is paid to edit/proof-read these books, and obviously they haven't done a very good job. Every time I make a recipe, I pay for ingredients, and if it goes wrong, it is a waste.

I'm not completely focused on money, but when I pay this much money for cookbook I expect it to be accurate. And when I pay for food and ingredients, it is so they can be eaten, not thrown in the rubbish bin.

regardless of this being a fundraising book, I would expect there to be no mistakes, particularly at $40!

I puchased Devil of a cookbook from HO, i have had no email or postal note letting me know there are errors in the book.

I am happy that I bought it because of the animals & thats why I bought it. HO should contact all purchasers & cover the costs to let people know of the amendments. I have heard nothing from them.

Only via our forum

...our sincere apologies—a few gremlins got into the typing in the production of the Devil of a Cookbook and as a result we have produced these changes to the following recipes:

We hope you enjoy this book and enjoy adding your own twists to the recipes to make them your own!

here tis  ;D

I'm just about to make the sponge cake, and I thought there was a review? Oh well, I'll make one soon.

Not going to do a review, I didn't check the oven temp beforehand and it was too high and was starting to burn. I separated mix into 2 cake tins and they did not rise at all. Not fair to review it if I stuffed something up, so possibly will try again another time. REally disappointed with myself.

Dear CP,  The flour version is nice.  That's the one that was made on the day of our training. c

I happened to be on the recipe community site yesterday and noticed the melting moment recipe had been posted with the new weights of ingredients and down the bottom it said it was the "tweaked" version of the one in the book.

I wouldnt say a correct list of ingredients and their weights is a "tweak" more like a correction. Obviously HO are not really owning up to these mistakes.

I thought the same thing when I saw people spreading around the "tweaked" version lovemythermo. I was thinking... what? "Tweaked"?? Umm no, the recipe didn't work the way it was. I made those melting moments before they were "tweaked" and they were awful, inedible. I appreciate that the book is for a good cause but I think it's odd that the consultants are the ones scrambling around in damage control trying to justify the errors while the TMX and Devil of a Cookbook FB pages have said nothing (So far!). I must admit that since it was mentioned earlier, I am now wondering where that $60 per head is going to...

I must admit I was slightly sceptical that HO would be watching this forum as has been mentioned in the past but now I believe it. 30 minutes after I mention the "tweaked" melting moment recipe, and mrs thermo says its not on the FB page and lo and behold its been updated. Its no wonder consultants don't feel they can be on here having their every comment watched.

What has the consultant got to gain by doing that?  We all should ave the freedom to talk as we wish, she obviously thinks she's doing te right thing but if she could find her business suffers in the long range if she is found out she will loose the trust of quite a lot of people and any potential customers.

It says chicken marinade or put in your favourite curry.  If you are on Facebook, you could ask that on the Devil of the Cookbook page.  It is mainly photographs and ads of cooking classes on there, but people who ask for tips get their questions answered there too.

I'm putting my hand up....I am a consultant since November last year.
There are many things that I don't approve in my current "job" however if I worked for another company eg myer I would still be working for someone else and following their rules which I may not like.
If and when I am fed up I will then chuck this "job" in.
The same would be if I worked for myer.
I hate follow up calls so I only send out a quick email thanking them for attending the demo.
I would hate a consultant to push this $$$ product down anyone's throat!!!
I know I would tell the to go to hell.
I believe the product sells itself and when a person sees the value in the machine THEY will contact me....hopefully :-))

Rara I would be exactly the same as you - probably not the type of demonstrator HO prefer but I cannot push anything down anyone's throat (I am not a consultant by the way).  I hate people knocking on my door wanting me to buy something and if they kept ringing me, it would turn me off completely - if I want something I will buy it without any pressure being applied.

Rara we love you.....and your recipes. I quite understand what you are saying.

Personally I think HO just does not need this forum and I am sure their consultants can be forum members without 'running to Mummy.' If a person is that insecure heaven help them.

We are individuals and should be allowed to make our own choices without pressure from anywhere. As others have said there are good and bad consultants and good and bad people in society too. I had a lousy one to start with but have been adopted by 2 wonderful people since. :-* :-* I have a dear friend who is a consultant but will not be pushed around by HO and does her own thing for demos etc. Everytime she thinks 'I've had enough" she gets another rush of sales.

OK off the soap box now, stepping down carefully so I don't fall. :D Can't break a leg as I'm going on a Forumfest.

I'm feeling a bit chuffed right now :D

This is no way sticking up for HO but if you purchased a Kitchen aid mixer, blender, food processor plus accessories you would spend well over the $2,000.
There is no training or demonstration only an instruction manual and maybe a sales assistant that has no idea how to use the machine (unless you purchase the machine online and there is no sales assistant)
As for the recipe books for Kitchen aids...... :-))
No forums that I am aware of....
I have registered my name down on the KA website for monthly newsletters and am yet to receive one.

I know quite a few of my friends that have KA's looking pretty on their kitchen benches and collecting dust.

At least with Thermomix there is some support whether its good or bad.
Also we have an extremely brilliant independent cooking forum  :D

Thanks everyone

I'm just new on this site but just wanted to say I love this cookbook! There are so many great recipes in it! My favourite is the feta and pumpkin tart but my family love the Greek sausages more! I made them into meatball shapes and served them with spaghetti! :) The whole steamed chook was a big hit too and the salmon with yoghurt dressing was amazing tonight! I'm making the Morroccan beef tomorrow or the Turmeric lamb - haven't quite decided yet! :D

oh and desserts ... self saucing chocolate pudding I'm thinking! ... with cream and custard!

I think it will be a bit like the EDC and other books, we need as many of the recipes reviewed, tweaked and posted here so we can ammend our recipes and it will be a fantastic book.

I am a Tasmanian and know that Fiona is passionate about this state, cooking and the TMX.

Last time we were in SA we came home with so many goodies they covered the dining room table. (150cm x 150cm) We hope to call in to Banrock Station too this year and see their bird sanctuary. (being there I will of course have to try some wine) It can mature all the way over the Nullabor.

Hi Cecilia,

I tried this peanut satay sauce yesterday and it had a lovely flavour. I added more peanut butter as I wanted it a bit thicker but that's what recipes are all about - changing them to suit yourself  :) - half the fun!!! My partner said he'd have liked it thinner to soak his copious amount of rice up with so just goes to show we all have different tastes!  :D It made enough sauce for around 2 meals and I used it with chicken and toasted cashews - yum!

There you go, Halex - thanks so much for your advice, STD.  :)  I'm still loving this book, too!  You seem to have cooked more than I have from it, so keep talking...  Later in the week I am planning "Fried Rice" and the Christmas Salad.  I think they will both make great side dishes.  It will be interesting to see how far they go as I'm contributing to a meal for 8 adults.

My sister tried the Fragrant Chicken Curry this week and loved that and I've heard heaps of people raving about the Pea Soup. I want to try the ones I haven't heard people commenting on, though.  Did Oliebollen again yesterday, with craisins - yum.  Will catch up with the Satay eventually, Halex.  Meanwhile, thanks for answering, STD.

No probs Cecilia!  :) I've thought of trying the fried rice too so shall wait and see what you think of it now before I do!

I had my curry night the other night but haven't had time to jump back on and give people's opinions. I'm not sure this is the right place to give feedback on the recipes but here we go anyway!  :D

I cooked Turmeric Lamb; Fragrant Chicken Curry and Sweet Morroccan Curry for 7 friends. Interestingly the girls all voted the Chicken Curry the dish of the night as they loved the fresh flavours and lighter meat while the boys were split 50/50 on the lamb and the beef. From my point of view I thought they were all great although I'm not really a sweet curry fan so would reduce the sweetness in the beef curry next time ... VERY tasty though and super easy and the beef was cooked well. The lamb surprised me with the depth of flavour as did the chicken curry - not really many ingredients but loads of layers of flavours. I didn't use the cinnamon stick in the lamb as I'm not a fan of biting into a piece of spice (stat anise, cinnamon etc) so used the ground cinnamon instead. Which was my favourite? Let me just say I loved them all!

For dessert I made the Citrus Mascarpone Tart for the first time - delish!!! ;D I cheated and used shop bought mascarpone but my TMX was glaring at me accusingly from it's corner on the bench so I shall have to try making my own next time! Has anyone tried making mascarpone?

Sam  :)

I haven't made anything from the book, yet. Must admit, when I heard there was going to be some corrections, I was a little put off.
I do feel so sorry for Fiona, she's put her heart and soul into the project.

I'm pretty sure it's 100% of the profits going to the Devil's project, not 100% of sales.

Hi all...

I have been following this topic closely and I would really appreciate if some of you could take out some posts that are either offensive or speak badly about consultants, other sites and the charity in itself. Please slim this down to recipe corrections only.

I agree that this forum is here to be as transparent as possible about the wonderful Thermomix machine. I will NOT delete this topic as members have the right to make amendments to incorrect ingredients. I can understand that some of you are unhappy about what has happened concerning this recipe book. But please bear in mind that this is for a very good cause and that Thermomix do release excellent books in order to widen our taste bugs and imagination.

PLEASE save time for myself and the moderators by slimming this down.

I don't wish for new/existing members to see such posts that appear here.  We don't want members to leave or speak badly about this forum. Over the years, only great things have been mentioned and that has helped us grow. We all want to see this forum grow. There is still huge growth potential!

I am not finger pointing at anyone and I blame only myself for not acting sooner.

Let's keep up the magic. This forum is the biggest English speaking Thermomix community in the universe. Literally thousands and  thousands of people come here on a daily basis for fun, friendship and help. All of you are the success that has happened here.

Thank you all for your attention.  Keep smiling

Thank you MM. Well said.

If such a fuss had not been made about removing the minor corrections then in all probability no one would have noticed the errors in the cookbook, which of course make it no less desirable as a beautiful book instigated by a wonderful chef, charity worker and Thermomix consultant Fiona Hoskin.

It always saddens me to read negative comments regarding the hard working consultants who's main desire is to share the Thermomix experience. I personally feel they need more support and nurturing here where they can offer their expertise in an unbiased way.

As you said this is a very popular friendly forum thanks to you and the lovely moderators who keep us on our toes. As in any community there are differences of opinion from time to time but more especially when it is perceived that  someone is "pushing their own barrel" or trying to censor others  unnecessarily. Things usually sort themselves out nicely or a troublemaker finally gives up.

We seem to have had a nice bunch of new members who start to contribute straight away which gives us older member a lift and some great new threads are developing adding to the fun and interest.

I do wish all those hundreds of lurkers would join in and have some fun with us. Be nice to have some members from more of the wider Thermomix Community .

Gretchen

MM,  you are certainly correct about the magic of this Forum.  The generosity of the Moderators to both new and old members is amazing, as are the contributions from active Forum Members.

STD,  there is a recipe for mascarpone in the Everyday Cookbook.  I haven't tried it yet and haven't found a review for it on this forum.

In response to questions from customers, I have been making up a list of tmx-made cheeses people have reviewed, so if you do make some mascarpone, please consider adding a comment on this thread too:

:) Thanks Cecilia. I'll be sure to give that recipe a go next time I need mascarpone  :) I don't use it much - maybe twice a year so don't hold your breath for my comments!  ;D I'll defintely be checking out those cheese links though.

BTW - I made the 'Roast chicken' tonight from the Devil book and my family said it was the best chicken they'd ever tasted. I didn't tell them it was steamed in case they thought it was healthy! Defintely on my 'to do again' list.

We'd love to find out more about you. Are you from Tassie too? Are you a consultant or just a TMX lover like most of us?

OMG! My friends have just pointed out what the initials STD could be mistaken for meaning!!! LOL!!! How can I change my user name to something more 'user friendly'!?!?  I clearly didn't think that one through well enough!!!  ;D

STD, good idea.  Just go into your profile and change it under a/c related settings.  Then perhaps go over to Introduce Yourself under your new name and explain that you were previously STD so that we all still know who you are.  If you are a consultant in Tassie, why not tell us - we like people to be upfront with us.

Just after I attended the Devil of a Cookbook Cooking Class, I made poolish for Mick's Ciabatta but I didn't get time to use it, so I froze it just in case it was useable later on. Does anyone know if the poolish would be ok to use now? I did leave it enough time to rise....so it's in its risen state. If so, this could be a handy way of doing poolish because you have to be pretty organised (which I'm obviously not) when deciding to make the rolls (which by the way were lovely at the cooking class).

If you ask on the Facebook Devil of a Cookbook page, Fiona Hoskin (editor of the book) will answer your question, Jamberie.
