Title: New Forum coming up
Post by: Master Moderator on March 13, 2015, 10:09:10 am
Hi all....

Just want to let you all know that we are going to change our forum in a big way. It's about time we upgraded and gave our forum a modern touch. It'll have a complete make over BUT all content will be there. I am really excited about this new chapter.

I will keep you updated. Sorry in advance for lack of quick replies in the next few day. Swamped with work.

We aim to have the new forum launch on 28th March.

Excited?

MM

PS; Yes, our wonderful moderators have been involved in the decision making... Thank You!!!!!

That's great news! Well done MM and moderators :)
Hopefully the new look will entice even more people to engage with our great forum...and maybe there might even be a few new features!?!

 :D Elsie

I'm very excited about this!! I find the forum good if you're on it all the time. But, if you're an infrequent visitor, the front page is full of stuff that is 1000's of pages long and just too hard to bother with.

I'm like you AB, find it hard to  pick up new things when it comes to technology, but if there are links to register on social media like Face Book, I might even be seen there if it is as simple as clicking a button. Lol

Couldn't agree more, Cookie!!  The first thing that came to mind when I first saw this was that all the previous content might be lost. :o ??? ???  The forum is an absolute treasure trove and to lose any of it would be such a shame . . .!!

Thanks MM . . and thanks too those three very hard working mods!!  :D :D

I would love to see a function for saving recipes
Title: Re: New Forum coming up
Post by: meganjane on March 14, 2015, 05:09:41 am
I use Evernote web clipper for saving recipes. It clips the recipe on the page, or a selection that you've made and then I can file it into one of the folders I have for recipes. Works a treat.

I'd like to be able to upload photos in a more efficient and simple way.
Title: Re: New Forum coming up
Post by: cookie1 on March 14, 2015, 06:04:41 am
MM has been brave and worked things out for himself. I'm keeping my fingers cross for an easier search function too and somewhere we can save our recipes. At the moment I use Snap recipes.
Sadly none of the moderators are up with this sort of thing so we are a bit like you, keeping our fingers crossed. MM has been kind enough to share with us a peek at the new website.

Cookie i was using Snap recipes too but it chewed up too much memory in my iPad. Did you find this to be a problem?
Title: Re: New Forum coming up
Post by: cookie1 on March 15, 2015, 08:05:51 am
Yes it does. Now after I have tried a recipe if it is good I print it then delete it from Snap. I also go through my Snap collection every month or two and delete anything I haven't tried and don't think I will.
I thought it was the answer to all my problems until I realised how much memory it uses.

I'm looking for an app for my tablet and finding it very hard. Paprika costs $19.95 and I think that is way too much but the cheapy versions are useless. For now am using free for 1 month apps to see which are the easiest for me to use and worth paying for.

Keep an eye out for a cheaper price mcmich, prices do change sometimes. I put off buying Paprika too, but managed to get it on sale for $2.99 or $5.99 (can't remember exactly, but nowhere near $19.99!)

Paprika is fantastic but not worth $20. That's really cheeky of them. I think I paid $7.99, but used up an iTunes credit I had to pay for it.

I have recently started looking at and using Pepperplate which is free and pretty good, a bit clunky, but bearable.  My only disappointment has been that I have not been able to upload photos, but it can be done, I just haven't had success yet!

Really look forward to a new format.
I now resort to googling,  to find the recipe I'm after in here.  So any improvements on searching for a recipe will be fabulous.

The amount of pins on chit chat probably stop me from looking beyond page 1.

I think more specific categories would be hugely appreciated.  Eg...biscuits, cakes, slice etc.
it would certainly save lots of scrolling & searching.

That's true Maddy. I hate having to look through Cakes for biscuits, slices etc. the Google way is a good way to search and quicker than on the forum.

Marina – once you’ve saved your recipe in Pepperplate, the recipe will have a box where a photo can go, the box says upload image.

Click on this and then select the file/folder where you have the photo saved.  It might be libraries/pictures or something else depending on where you save your photos.  Choose the photo you want, then open.  The photo will then load, once finished loading scroll down the page a bit and you’ll see a little box that says done – click on this.

If you are trying to save a photo into Pepperplate that you’ve found on the internet (and not one of your own saved photos) you will need to save it from the internet to your own computer.  Find the image you want, right click on it, select save picture as (choose a place on your computer to save the photo, somewhere like libraries/pictures or even your desk top).  Once you have the photo image saved on your computer proceed as above.

Hope that helps   ;D

It's great! Clear, clean and light. I don't have any ads coming up anywhere.

Thanks MM!!

It's been mentioned before, but there are far too many pinned posts on page 1. Some posts haven't been commented on for months and months. The What are you doing today?, What is for lunch? etc etc needn't be pinned. They're always active so will naturally appear at the top.

Mmmm  we have only been home for an hour or so and I've just sat down to read the forum. I know it will take time to get used to. I find the print very small. The ad at the base of each thing I read is going to take some getting used to as well. I keep thinking it is another post.

I also agree the print is to small and the ads on the side are way too big!!! They are seem to be taking over the size of the forum page.

Just logged on after a week in Melbourne so haven't had much of a look.  I would like to see the font much bigger as too hard to read and I also don't like the ads.

Hi all,

thanks for the positive comments. Even I am trying to get used to new layout!

I am taking notes of comments and will pass them on to Mr. IT. Please not that not all requests will be possible.

Can someone take a screen shot of where the ads are appearing in the posts? I cannot see this. with so many different gadgets we use these days, it's hard to catch up

Chat later

Here are 2 screen shots from my iPad MM.  The ads are in the same place on my lap top but there's no forumthermomix heading on the iPad, it's there on my laptop though. The ads on the side are huge.

MM I would just be 'over the moon' if photo's were easy to upload. I upload to Facebook all the time, and I think it makes the forum more interesting to see a picture but the last year or so I really just can't be bothered putting a picture up because it would probably take 10 mins to do so.

I don't think much has changed, except it is harder to read the replies due to light print.  The emoticons are creepy.

Hello to all

Looking at your suggestions to see what can we change. The template is a custom one, so I don't know if it is possible to change the font size but this is the same size as the "previous" one. The font itself is different.

Ads, we only have two at tops and it's a way to pay the bills of hosting, maybe I can do something about it in the tablet/mobile department.

Unread and replies are in the right upper corner.

We do now allow register and login with facebook, twitter, google and wordpress. I think current accounts can link to the social logins.

Working on the photo department. :)

Keep them coming.

For people with ads on their pages,  you can download a free program called Adblock, it will block all ads.  I don't have any at all on my page.  :)

Here is a screen shot of the home page on my laptop.

Do you have a downloads folder Judy?  You might find it in there and then will have to click on it to install.  I'm on a Mac so am unsure how different it is to a Windows pc.

Several minor issues!
The print is really difficult to read easily against the backgroud shading.
It would be good if it was bolder and not so fine.
Also Tapatalk not working. Although I am not keen on Tapatalk it would be easier to read than the new forum on an ipad.
Also the little "last post" icon is tiny and when you enlarge to click you loose perspective on the screen.
Thanks for all the work though it is good to update the forum.[size=12pt

I will check with the designer he way to "darker" the font and maybe increase a pixel or two.

Tweaking adds to accommodate the suggestions, since they are the way to pay the hosting.

I've never paid for Adblock Deniser.

I've just done the Command + and what a difference to the font size.  Perfect now for me, thankyou.  ;D

Also I love how I can Preview my post now before posting.  I couldn't do that with the old system, could only see one line and had to scroll down line by line to check what I'd written.  Now I can see the whole post and photo if I've posted one.  :D

I most certainly wouldn't want to pay a subscription for obvious reasons and I'm sure MM doesn't intend going down that path.  You might have given him some ideas now though girls  ;)

The general consensus of opinion is positive, it takes a little while to get used to but I surprised myself for an old codger, got the hang of it very quickly.  I'm sure we'll be thrown a few curved balls as moderators though when problems arise. Hopefully there won't be too many problems and will stay on air a bit more successfully than we have been lately.

I asked this question in another thread but sadly for me, no one has been able to respond so I am posting here.  I download Tapatalk but my question now is, how do I delete  forums I do not want and how do I add this forum?  This is the one I really want and unless I can read it, which right now is very difficult, there is no sense in subscribing to it.  The font is tiny, the ads on the side take up at least 25% of the space on my iPad and the faintness of the font doesn't help either.  From what I have read, if I can get Tapatalk to work, it should be a lot easier to read.  Thank you.

I don't think you need to delete the forums you don't want, these are just suggestions - unless you add them you're not subscribed to them.

At the bottom of the page are some icons,  the icon that looks like binoculars  (glasses) is the search function, search for forum Thermomix, then select it and add it. The icon that looks like a person is your home screen, once you've added the forum it will appear here. If it's the only forum you've added, it will be the only forum that should appear on this screen.

Sign in with your normal forum name and password.
Hope that helps.

In regards to reading the forum via the Internet version on your iPad - I have a mini iPad, so the font is small. I always turn my iPad to landscape to make it bigger, then I stretch the screen so it's bigger again, I stretch it so the ads disappear off the side of the iPad and I'm only left with the part of the forum I want to read.

I have no Thermomix heading on my iPad, it starts with the green band with Home, Help, Search, Admin buttons etc.  Good thing I have that band or I wouldn't be much help as a moderator.

I've had a query over the weekend from a member who couldn't find a recipe so I used Mr Google to find it for her which I have always found quicker.  Is anyone else having trouble searching for things?

I guess that the search feature chooses one word and goes with that.  Google turns up better results than the internal search engine.  Can you incorporate a google search within the forum? So, google only searches the forum, not the net?
Title: Re: New Forum coming up
Post by: judydawn on April 15, 2015, 04:04:59 am
MM & Admin, I haven't had reason to search for anything on the new forum until today.  I wanted Tuna Noodle & Corn Casserole.  I searched in the appropriate topic, Seafood & Fish using the exact name of the recipe.  Firstly it wouldn't accept &, I had to use 'and'.  I was then given a whole heap of information I didn't need and my recipe was No. 8 on the list provided.  It then proceeded to give me the whole recipe and all the comments our members have made.  Is this really necessary?  When we're searching for a recipe we only want the link to that particular recipe where we will find all the information we need, not every recipe that has the word tuna or noodle in it.   I can see now why our members are not happy with the new search engine, Mr Google gets it right so it would be appreciated if our forum could do the same.U

I later tried searching for it from the Home Page but although there were mentionings of it from those who made it, you couldn't click on the name of it to go to the recipe.

I also tried searching for it again in Seafood & Fish and this time it was the only one on the page, albeit that long version I spoke of.  Maybe because I've been in and out of that topic a few times this morning, it has now realised that it's the one I want LOL.

Uhm..

As for the search, I have to check with the "makers" of the forum motor, but the problem in your search was the "&", it does not like one char words.. :(

And it search in all the text of the topic so that's why you get a lot of hits.

I will to try to see if it's possible to have a better search, or at least one that is more similar to Mr. Google. :)

As for the ad, Mr Google suggests that size, and that's why we use it. :(

Such a shame it can't be rectified because it's really dominant. It cuts the heading off at the top of my iPad so it reads        *rum
                                     *romix.com
I'm not the only one who hates the size of the ads.

I don't think I have ever been on a site that had 1/3 of it's page occupied by ads.  Very annoying.

I'm missing the top part altogether.  My page starts with the dark green band with Home, help, search etc in it, you wouldn't know it was forumthermomix if you didn't know better as that part is missing.

The print has gotten smaller and lighter again.  Was the update beta tested before it went live?  It seems to me that some of these issues should have been addressed during beta testing.

MM, Firstly I also don't have a proper heading on top.  As for the searching....well one example I can give you is that I put in the words passionfruit slice which is what MJ called the slice.  It brought up several  things with passionfruit in but the slice never came up in the list.  Had to PM Judy to see if she had a copy of this recipe.  This has also happened with several other recipes.

It seems people using iPads are the ones having problems.  Maybe look into getting something like Adblock which should remove the ads.  The page may then sit better on your screens?  Maybe worth a try.

I use my laptop with Adblock on it so have no ads whatsoever.  I love the new, clean and bright looking forum and as someone pointed out on here further back in the thread, it's easy to enlarge the font by pressing a couple of keys on your keyboard if need be.  I like the darker font colour too.

I hope people can sort this out for better viewing on your devices,  to make it a pleasureable experience.  :)

I like to use the new format, but definitely don't like the grey background and small font.  Saw an eye specialist this week and he explained that this combination is the hardest to read for everyone.  So why have we got it?  I am almost inclined to not use the Forum any more.

Also the adds. A 1/3 for the page of Asian woman and guys who are not interested in young woman.  I am perfectly happy with what I have, thank you. I thought good marketing would be to have the adds relevant to the Forum.

This is probably the last comment from me for a while.

My Samsung tablet looks the same as ES's ipad. It is quite hard to read with such small, light font. The emoticons are still really creepy looking, I like the old ones.

I know how you feel Chookie. I have taken to spreading my iPad page until the add on the right disappears. Actually it is the one at the bottom I hate, I always think there are more posts to read and it's an ad.  :'( :'(

Hello

I will pump up the font if possible.

As for the "whitish" background, it is more or less used in all major sites. Don't know what would be best in this case. (they say the best is actually a black background, but I think it would not be very good)

As for the ad relevance, Mr. Google goes more for the user preferences than for the site itself. But I can try to see what other suggestions and or options we have.

Thanks

Thanks MM. I would appreciate changes to font size and density of colour of print. if these were fixed the background would be OK.  I enjoy the Forum and don't wish to withdraw as a member   .Mr Google must have his wires crossed as the majority of members are woman, so why the Asian woman adds?

This is the first time I have read this thread for several weeks and really feel for those who are experiencing such terrible problems.  I do hope they can be resolved quickly as it would be a tradgedy to lose any of our wonderful members.  I do not want to sound ungrateful for all that you have done, MM, but I have to ask if you are using a professional web designer / service in this upgrade?  Perhaps that is, in fact, your job as I do not know anything of your background, but I believe it is their job to ensure that so many of these problems do not arise in situations such as this.

As for myself, well, I usually only ever access the forum on my desktop pc - occasionally from a laptop - and I have not experienced so many problems.  I do have Adblock running as well, so that obviously helps.  After reading this thread, I am very reluctant to look at the forum on our notebook or tablet, I think that would really wind me up if I were to have all the problems so many of you are having.

I know you can never keep everyone happy, but you can keep most people smiling.  My fingers are crossed that all will be resolved very soon.

I had wondered in a post farther down if the upgrade had been beta tested as I cannot believe that an upgrade would be problematic for so many people.  Many of these problems would normally be resolved during beta testing, particularly things like a tiny font and a very faint one at that.  And just to add that I agree with another poster who found the dating ads offensive.  Most of the posters are women and I dare say most of us are not interested in dating Asian women, or women period, so I can't figure out the purpose of these ads are.  It sure can't be making the advertisers any money.  Plus, the fact they take up a third of the page is also annoying.

I kinda wish the old forum had been left as is!
I can't really see any improvement in the tablet or mobile form.
It is still a fabulous forum to visit but the format hasn't really been improved and with out Tapatalk it would be quite frustrating.

I use an ad blocker on my iPad (speed me up) so no ads. I much prefer to use tapatalk than the forum online,  it doesn't look like much has changed other than the color. I find tapatalk so much easier to use and I can save recipes by subscribing, easy to find again.

Now the font is black (pure black) and a little bigger.

We are waiting for a responsive theme to add it to the forum. This way it will fit in any device more nicely.

And we do only have 3 ads... and not in all forum... it's the way to make it running.
