Cheeseburger Pie

Name of Recipe:  Cheeseburger Pie
Number of People:  4 generous serves, 6 conservative serves

Ingredients:

1 quantity cream cheese pastry, or bought shortcrust pastry.

Pie Ingredients:

500g lean mince beef
1 onion - quartered
2 garlic cloves
1/2 cup fresh flat leaf parsley (or 1 Tbsp. dried)
2-3 large dill pickles (I used sweet spiced)
4 Tbsp. of the pickle vinegar
1 egg
4 Tbsp. tomato paste
1-2 Tbsp. mustard (I used 1.5 Tbsp. Dijon)
1/2 cup fresh breadcrumbs
a few drops tabasco sauce - optional - (I didn't use)
2 Tbsp. sesame seeds
generous salt & pepper

1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (for topping)
Fresh lettuce, tomato, pickles and tomato sauce (ketchup) to serve on top of pie.

Pastry Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 200oC.

Prepare pastry, and lightly grease a pie plate, and line with pastry (extend a little over edge as it will shrink when cooked).
* I used a 24cm non stick - loose base pie/tart tin*
Line pastry with grease proof paper, add baking beads, and blind bake for 15 minutes.
Remove paper & beads, turn oven down to 180c, and bake the pastry shell for a further 5 minutes.
Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes.

Pie Preparation:

Add 1 slice of bread, and chop until you have breadcrumbs.  (Set aside, and add in with the mince).
Add onion, garlic cloves, parsley (if using fresh), and pickles to jug.  Chop 5 seconds, speed 5.  Scrape down jug.
Add the rest of the ingredients (except the cheese).
Mix together for 20 seconds,  :-: speed 4.

Spoon mince mixture into pastry shell. (fill to just below the level of where the pastry shrinks to.  Shape any left over mince into patties, and freeze for later use)
Top the mince with the shredded cheese, and bake for 30 minutes.
Allow the pie to stand for 10 minutes before cutting & serving.



Top the sliced pie with shredded lettuce, tomato, extra pickle and tomato sauce (ketchup)



Kids LOVED it!  8)

Chelsea - This was very yummy Maddy. A really lovely treat meal for the kids (and for my DH who thought it tasted like a McFeast Burger ). I didn't use the pickles but added a splash of vinegar to replace the pickle vinegar. Cookie's pastry was a dream to work with and lovely in this pie. Thanks Maddy - a great conversion.

I liked the look of this when I saw it on NQN the other day.  Gee you were quick to whip it up!  Looks great maddy!

 :o :o......the pickles are the best part Chelsea! LOL......I'm like the ham-burglar....and I wait for everyone to toss me their pickles  :P

Maddy, when I read the topic title, I thought, "Yuk!", but seeing the recipe and photo, I'm converted!!
I believe that Macca's are bringing back the McFeast burger too... 
It's the only one that had salad and the only one I've ever bought from Macca's.
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

I must admit I wasn't overly keen until I read the recipe MJ. It is really a lovely beef pie that is seasoned very nicely and topped with cheese and salad.  We made 3 small patties using the left over mince and they were yummy too.:)
