Porridge for 1..or more.
« on: August 14, 2011, 09:37:52 am »
Name of Recipe: Porridge (creamy style)
Number of People: 1
Ingredients:

 20 g        porridge oats
200 g        milk (I use full cream milk)
 1 tsp        sugar (or Rapadura)
½ tsp        Ground nutmeg or cinnamon
 10 g        raisins

Preparation:

1. Weigh the oats into the TM bowl
2. Weigh and add milk, cinnamon or nutmeg and sugar
3. Mix ingredients for 3 secs/speed 2
4. cook 5mins/100*/spoon reverse/speed 1½
5. add dried fruit to finished porridge and stir in for the last 10 secs.

Photos:

Tips/Hints:
Preparation time: 2 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Ready in: 7 minutes

The porridge will seem thin as you pour it out into your dish but trust me and wait just one minute and it magically thickens to a creamy similar to rice pudding (not glutinous) texture. It has not stuck on the TM bowl but it is best to wash the TM bowl whilst your porridge thickens so as to prevent it from continuing to cook on the bottom.

You remind me of me Hally when I first found this forum.  I wanted to try everything and anything and had never baked as much in my life.  Always loved home made cakes but they were a real treat in this house and only for visitors.  I try not to eat too much of what I bake now - probably why the freezer is always full  :-))  You will settle down and adjust your eating habits eventually but at least you have DS, his friends and DH to share them with - my DH rarely eats cake or biscuits.  All bad things in moderation is the secret I think - let others eat the bulk of it.  With all the exercise you do, it has to negate some of the calories surely?

Hi hepiwhanau,  I am glad you found this recipe useful. It is often the most basic that are the most used. My porridge today was lovely. I chopped and cooked a dessert apple with a tablespoon of water added for 2 mins and set it aside whilst I made the porridge and put the apple on top. There are many ways to enjoy porridge arn't there?

Accuracy of the ingredients and the timing are everything to prevent it sticking in the TMX bowl. I find it important to wash the bowl or at least rinse it whilst you wait the minute for the porridge to thicken in the dish.

Another nice addition is to chop a banana into the mixture before cooking it.  I read about this on the BBC Good Food site and it really is yummy, especially with the cinnamon.

You certainly can use water instead of milk but IMHO it doesn't taste as good.   I use half milk and half water.   And the best way to stop it sticking is to run the machine at speed 3 when cooking it.  ;) ;)

My middle son loves porridge but I rarely make it. My preference is for the steel cut oats cooked in a tiny crock pot over night.  With the lice of modern breakfast cereals making porridge easily is very appealing  :)
