Hi All, Somewhere on here I have found a recipe for cheap and easy biscuits and in it there was a recipe for condensed milk. But I am buggered if I can find it again, so if anyone knows the recipe for condensed milk I would appreciate it. I know that it had powdered milk, butter and sugar in it but  I don`t know in what quantities.  Thanks for your help. Sandy

Trudy Olive put a recipe on the forum and I happened to write it down Intrepidtrier.
100g water
220g powdered milk
80g sugar
Blitz the sugar for 8 sec/speed 9.
Add water, cook 5 mins/80o/speed 1 until sugar dissolves.
Add the powdered milk and cook another 3 mins/50o/speed 4.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Now I have written a couple of the recipes down and will try some of them and put the recipes somewhere safe. Sandy

after seeing this yesterday, I had to go off and make some. So easy, and when DD dipped her finger in it she was surprised also that it tasted like the "real thing" out of a can  :D

I agree with Cookie...there is no higher praise than 'it tastes like the real thing'.  I'll try it on my offspring soon following that recommendation.

best to use it pretty well much when you make it. I stored it for 2-3 days in the fridge before using it and it hardened up so it was not that thick gooey consistency as you get when you first make it. Didn't affect the slice though  ;)

DS3 (16 y.o chef in the making :D) made this last night as much as I don't like powdered milk I am really trying not to squash his efforts in the kitchen  ;) ;) I must say I was really impressed with how it turned out for 10 mins of TMX work!!

Think I will be happy for them to use this recipe as we would only use SCM a couple of times a year in recipes and more so for festive ones. 

It worked a treat in the caramel slice he has desperately been wanting to make since he made it at school last week - yes that is my hips you hear groaning  :-)) :-)) :-))

I've been reading this thread and debating the whole powdered milk issue too Kathryn.  We only use condensed milk a couple of times a year also, but I'm just not sure I can bring myself to buy it.  I wonder if store-bought condensed milk is made with powdered milk.  I know lot's of things are.  :)

This was the dilemma I had Chelsea - not really knowing how the store bought one was made, I just made the decision that for the very few times we use it a year then this would suffice.

I worked out it cost me $1.50 to make the same amount as a can which is about $2.70 here to buy - although price has never come into play when I consider making or buying!

I will have a go at the other thread that is on here using whole milk but it takes some serious planning for my tmx to be in action for 1.5 hours just to make SCM  :o :o

OK just dragged out an old Nestle label that I had saved with a recipe on it.

It states the ingredients are Milk & Sugar

In a balloon above that it has "Made with fresh milk, it's the ideal ingredient to create sweet indulgences that tempt the taste buds"

With our labelling laws does this mean that it is FRESH milk or fresh milk that has been dried??!! Do you think I trust labels  :o :o

I think it would probably have to be fresh milk, but like you say it's hard to know with our slack food labelling laws (and especially with Nestle - a disgraceful company).  I would like to try making it just for the novelty factor though. :)

I know what you mean Chelsea, my initial reaction is "oh it is fresh milk" then my gut says ... but hang on a minute is it really  ??? ??? ???
