Dog biscuits
« on: November 07, 2009, 10:11:59 am »
Not too sure where to put this one, but this was a recipe I found on the net.  I have a 14 year old dog called Max, he loves a biscuit in the morning.  Sometimes his breath gets a bit over the top, so these parsley biscuits seem to have helped.  I might try a hard cheese like cheddar next time to make it tastier.  The flat leaf parsley is the one I use, tastes better and grows like a weed up here in Cairns.

3 cups   Minced fresh parsley
¼ cup   Finely chopped carrot
¼ cup   Grated Mozzarella cheese
2 tablespoons   Vegetable oil
2¾ cup   Wholemeal flour
2 tablespoons   Unprocessed bran flakes
2 teaspoons   Baking powder
½ to 1 cup water

Mince the parsley, carrot and cheese together until fine, on 6.  Add flour, oil, bran and baking powder.  Add half a cup of water, more  if needed.  The dough needs to be quite dry.  Mix on  :: for 2 minutes until you get a stiff dough.  Add more wholemeal flour if you've overdone the water.

Roll it out using a rolling pin, dues with more flour. Use a bone shaped biscuit cutter to cut into the right shapes, and place on a baking tray for 30-60 minutes at 200 until brown.  Mine took quite a while to go brown.

Max likes them - sort of.  I think a tastier cheese, maybe even parmesan rinds, might make them more to his liking.

Nice one Paul. Maybe we should have an animals thread as there is a few discussions on dog food. I am now looking for recipes to feed my diagnosed as of today diabetic cat when he comes home from hospital!!  :-))

Poor puss. Here is one web site I came across. http://www.catdr.com/cat_care_diabetes.htm .

An animal thread would be good. It seems we have all sorts of pets here.

Thanks for the dog biscuits - I have a recipe for a biscuit for dogs with arthritis that I got from a consultant.  Meaning to post it.

faffa_70 - sounds like you need the vet to give you a shot too  ;) ;).  The world has changed in relation to feeding diabetic cats.  The latest work is coming from Jacquie rand at Uni of Qld.  I can check to see if your vet can't help, but I'm sure they'll be fine.

This reminds me of a recipe I got from my Soapdish forum:

Spot's Golden Cheese Dreams

A nice elastic dough which makes a golden-flecked, chewy treat. Makes about 60 (using small K-9 Cutter - Dog biscuit shape).

3 cups whole wheat flour ( I've used other flours, such as 7 grain or spelt)
2 tsps garlic powder
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup shredded cheese
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk

1. In  *:, combine flour and garlic powder.
2. Gradually pour in vegetable oil, cheese, beaten egg and milk until well blended.
3. Knead dough  on :: until elastic. Tip out.
4. With a rolling pin, roll dough to 1/2" thickness
5. Cut with K-9 Biscuit Cutter and place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
6. Bake 25 minutes at 400°F.
7. Cool on a rack and store, at room temp., in a container with a loose-fitting lid.

I haven't made these, but have converted the recipe to TMX, so I'd love if someone tried them and let me know how they go!
A great cook is one who can rustle up a fabulous family meal with some freezer burnt chops, wilted carrots, sprouting potatoes and cabbage that's gone brown on the cut edges.

Today I received in the mail a little dog bone cutter, only 1 1/2 inches long, perfect for my little chihuahua and foxy.  Couldn't wait to give it a try and made MJ's recipe.  Only made half the quantity to see if they liked them first and also had to use white flour not having wholemeal flour in my pantry.  So easy to make and even doing half amount there are enough to keep them going for a little while.

After allowing to cool I gave one each to the dogs,  chihuahua (Lizzie) ran off with it to her kennel and the foxy (Patch) pushed it around for a bit with her nose.  I thought Oh Oh, they're not going to eat them, but after a few more sniffs, she took a little bite, then finished the rest off.  I gave her another one and she ate it straight away, she was just being cautious I think.  I checked Lizzie to see if she had eaten hers and it was gone.  Gave her another one and she too was chewing it straight away.  So yes they both liked them.  The size is just right for them after baking as they rise a bit, so a good size for my 2.

I bought some of those jerky sticks a couple of weeks ago from the cheap shop and they won't touch them, though they love Schmackos, hence my trepidation of them liking them.  Anyway, all good, I will make more when these have gone and will get some wholemeal flour.  Has made me want to try other recipes too, so thankyou MJ for sharing your recipe. ;D

Only thought of taking a photo as an afterthought after putting them in a container so the quality isn't the best being in glass.

There are a few dog bickie recipes on here now but there a bit all over the place. I was given this one today - it is adapted from a Dr Harry recipe.
Ingredients
200-300g parsley
1 small carrot
60g cheese
30g oil
270g wholemeal flour
30g bran flakes
2 tsp baking powder
120g - 230g water
1. With TMX blades running at speed 7 add carrot, parsley and cheese so all grated. Scrap down.
2. Add oil and dry ingredients and 120g water while on speed 3.
3.  :: Knead for 1 minute adding more water to make dough moist.
4. Roll dough to 1 cm thick and cut into bikies, baking on greased trays at 180oC for 20-30 mins until brown.
5. Allow to cool and will harden as they cool. Store in air tight, dog proof container for up to 2 months.

Parsley helps with dog breath and also are packed with vit C and iron.
