A few months ago I asked a similar question for a friend...I'm sorry I can't link on my phone (and can't move to pc with sleeping baby on my lap!!). The post included ideas from forum members of what to check when buying 2nd hand.

To be honest to my forum friend, I must say I have heard of cheaper prices...(not sure if I can be specific as per forum rules, please let me know if my post is not ok) a friend of mine purchased a TM31 for a tiny bit more on ebay and she got 2 bowl sets and travel case included. Another friend purchased for a few hundred less on thermomanic  (only one bbl set).
Both friends are super happy with their purchases and got great machines.
I kind of like the idea of paying through paypal/ebay as you have a little 'insurance' with such an expensive purchase.
Good luck, let us know how you go :)

Thank you, Judy and Jamberie, both immensley helpful answers.   One more question, what is the green seal?  I have only a very, very vague memory of something like this from many years ago but cannot remember the details. My consultant has also contacted me with another lead "almot new, $1,700" - a bit greedy, I think, but may have bargaining room with this one, so now I have to make a decision (that's the scary part but has to be done!).

Here's the posting on our forum Marina http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=15828.0.  If you google 'green seal thermomix' you will find a lot of discussion on this matter.

I have now purchased a TM31.  I paid more than I had anticipated but it was from a known source and had not had much use so decided to just go for it instead of running around trying to find one just a few dollars less and not knowing it's provenance.  I haven't had a chance to play with my new toy yet, but am plotting and planning it's first meal tonight!

I now also have a contact for two more 31s in Melbourne if anyone is interested.

Thanks to all those who gave me advice.

I bought a 31 several years ago and paid $1500.  It had hardly been used.  No problems with it and now DIL is using it , no problems. I bought it in good faith and did no tests. Jude's suggestions are good.

Haven't had a chance to make anything yet, CC as yesterday was a 5.2 fast day, but making "Non fried fried rice" tonight (it's a recipe off the recipe community).  I have this TMX at our home in the city but there is very little space for storage so most of the recipes I make will have to be very simple, with minimal ingredients.  Having said that, I am looking forward to being able to do a bit of cooking tonight.
