I need to use up .........
« on: May 10, 2015, 08:34:36 am »
I thought I would start a thread on using up excess ingredients.

At some point we have an excess of a staple with a use by date, fresh produce that seems to ripen all at once or just left overs that need to be used up.

As I live on the land, I can't just nick up the shop and I don't like wastage so I'm going old school like my Grandma would have done back in her day (well trying to anyway)

I need to use up left over chocolate sauce from the EDC

I made profiteroles but the sauce recipe made way too much.

What else can I do with it?

You could use it as a topping over ice cream or maybe as a base to make chocolate milkshake or hot chocolate  :)

Lamingtons? Chocolate fondue, crepes, icecream, and my all time favourite dip pretzels in it (don't knock it til you tried it ). There's also nothing wrong with dipping a spoon in it every time you visit the kitchen.

Kimmy you're terrible - I actually considered the spoon idea.

Great ideas everyone.

I made hot chocolate very nice.  Would never have thought of that.  I have to work today so I'm taking the rest in with marshmallows and going to make the girls hot chocolates 😊☺️

Have veggies left from roast dinner. Will make soup out of carrot  and parsnip mash , will add lentils. Will use leftover roast pumpkin and Awesome cheese sauce in a lasagne. Leftover cauliflower in fritters. Roast potatoes in bread. Yes , I always cook too much.
Funny that no Apple Cake Tart was left over. ,!

Lovely post Chrissa as I can see myself putting up a lot of questions here ;)

I have got a kg packet of milk powder which is about to expire and not able to decide what to do with it,
I know the best would be some dessert but not able to make up my mind, any ideas and probably something which is toddler friendly? :)

Almost every weekend after doing my week's cooking I have heaps of vegetables left over (I simply can't ignore them at market) and simply throw everything into a pot with lentis / rice / cashews / tofu and make a huge pot of stew.  It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but somehow - don't ask me how - it always turns out really delicious and filling, especially on these cold nights when you want something to warm body and soul.  A simple - rustic? - answer to using up all leftovers and a whole meal in a pot.

Not quite a toddler friendly recipe but you could make Condensed Milk with some of your milk powder
e.g. Making Condensed Milk from Scratch This could be a key ingredient to use in another recipe ;)
There are other condensed milk recipes here on the forum too :)

I was going to say condensed milk. You could also mix it up with water and use in any recipe requiring milk.

It looks as though this will be a very useful section.
